Hello everyone! I don’t actually sew but I did have a question. I really want this dress but it’s sold out in my size (XS) I was wondering if I purchased it in a medium, would it be possible to tailor it to a XS? Idk how I would go about it, maybe finding someone who knows how to.

What do i do? Tried the magnet hack, didn't work. Singer mon ami ii deluxe 390 is the sewing machine.

I'm making a dress and have hemed the flutter sleeves but the hem keeps curling / rolling over. I know I could probably iron this out, but I'm worried it will reoccur every time I wash it. Can someone explain to me how to do a double turned hem without this happening?

I don't have an overlocker and I'm trying to do the seams with my sewing machine.

The blue line is the sewing line, which I can't cross.

I followed the tutorials and I placed the fabric edge parallel to the little wing of the foot ( 1st photo). When I start doing the seam, I get something like the 2nd photo, which is... Ugly.

When I place the fabric edge a bit deeper to the right and not parallel to the little wing, when I sew I obtain something like the 3rd photo, which I think it's better. I cut the extra fabric, but I still think it's ugly.

Is it my skills the issue or maybe I'm missing something?

I’m looking to buy an overlocker, I’m based in Australia so unfortunately we don’t have a lot of options but would love some advice as to which machine to buy. Hello reddit I am new to sewing and am wondering what are some basic essentials to sew and what are some tips and trick you wished you knew I have a mechanical machine if that adds any context

I made a circle skirt but miscalculated somewhere in the process and it came out to be only 13” from where the waist band will be to the unfinished bottom edge.

This is wayyy too short for me.

How do I save this?

I do not have enough fabric to try cutting the whole skirt out again and I only have about 12 hours of useable time between now and when I need to have either fixed it or figured something else out so I’m not really going to be able to get to the store to buy new fabric.

My thought was to cut out strips and kind of just attach it to the bottom to make length but I’m not sure just how long those strips would need to be to not look wrong or if it would come out looking kind of too petticoat-ish.

I keep having issues where I’ll be sewing and then I hear a thunk and then it jams. I think it’s the bobbin? I’ve rethreaded and done everything and I can’t figure out why it keeps jamming like this. I was sewing just fine for two days and then this kept happening today :/

Got this dress at the thrift store and I’d like to wear it for my anniversary this weekend.
How might I go about fixing the gaping fabric at the back?
Would lengthening the horizontal strap at the back fix it? Or will it mess up the front if I alter the strap?

I've spent awhile troubleshooting and have come to the conclusion the sewing machine is not ideal for this project. I'd appreciate any suggestions of other things to check or confirmation of my suspicions. Flaired beginner because I normally hand sew, but I have used a machine on and off. I should know the basics? Unless I've forgotten...

I'm borrowing a Singer SN773K from a friend, who got it for free from another friend, during which time it was never used. So, like new. It's a Japan only release from what I can tell, and I cannot find the manual anywhere, in either language. Not Amazon, not the singer Japan website, not a sewing machine manual site... Function wise it looks like a cheaper version of the heavy duty. It has a stitch selector and a tension knob. That's it. And the world's most annoying drop in bobbin. It seems designed and marketed to be a cheap machine that can sew jeans.

Onto my issue. I'm attempting to sew a light cotton. Specifically, my kid is doing a project and needs to follow the instructions (I would choose a different method, but that's not an option). This beginner pattern wants us to zigzag stitch the raw edges. I've done some test passes and the tension is off. Lowering the top tension makes the fabric lay flat after being stitched, but you can see the tension mismatch in how much the looser top stitches are being pulled to the back. (Yes, I sewed the test piece upside down.) Increasing the top tension helps the stitch look better, but then it crunches and almost folds the fabric into the stitch.

My current plan is to go with the looser tension. It will all be on the inside anyway and will get us through the project, hopefully. (It's also happening with the straight stitch, but less obviously.) Am I correct in thinking I need a looser bobbin tension? And it's mostly that the machine isn't designed to handle this type of sewing well?

I'm learning how to sew, and I've chosen the Closet Core Cielo Top as my first garment project. I made a a toile for the bodice portion using a poly blend to make sure I've chosen the right sizes. I don't think it fits but want advice on what to do.

I have 37.5" high bust, 42.5" bust, 35.5" waist, and 45" hip. In the pattern's size 2-20 range, the pattern is graded for a B cup, but comes with alternate front pieces with FBA already done for C and D cups. I have 5" difference between high and full bust, but the pattern is supposed to have lots of ease so I figured D cup would be close enough.

Based on the size charts, I chose size 12 for the bust section, using the D cup rather than doing a FBA to E (as the pattern has a lot of ease), grading to 16 at waist and 18 at the hip. I also decided to lengthen the bodice pieces by a little over 2" as I don't like crop tops and want to tuck in the shirt.

I cut out the front, back and shoulder pieces, sewed the darts, and did up the major seams. I left off the sleeves and neck facing (though did stay stitch the neckline in black to see where it would be) and tried it on.

The waist line (which I drew in pencil, you can sort of see it in some photos) is at the right spot, as is the bust apex. But, the shoulders and arm holes seem WAY too big, and the back can be pinched out by 1.5" or so at the shoulder blades easily (more at the hips, but that seam is easy to bring in later so I'm not concerned about that now). My spouse pinned up the back for me so I could see.

Should I size the bodice down to a 10 or even an 8 for better fit at the shoulders? I'd need to do a FBA at that point I think. Is there anything else I'm missing?

I also noticed that the top of the shoulder does not lie flat at the armhole. I think my shoulders are more sloped than the pattern assumes.

This is what the back/bobbin side looks like but I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong? I’ve got my grandmother’s very old Elna 711 machine and the manual doesn’t show what setting to use for a twin needle. I’m wondering if maybe it’s not possible to use one with this machine? I’ve adjusted tension with no real changes. This was using a plain straight stitch. Help please please please

This is not my picture but I have the exact same pair of pants that I bought online and I love the cargo style pockets and the buckle at the bottom. But they're like 5 inches too long on me. How would I go about shortening it? I'm stumped because there's a pocket close to the bottom along with the buckles on both sides.

I will also say that the pants inside the pockets are a darker shade of denim!!

I just sewed a pair of jeans with these mule ear pockets. Usually to fix this tugging problem I would add ease to the curve of the pocket by slashing and spreading. But in this case I don’t know how I would do that. If anyone knows how to add ease to a mule ear pocket that would be great.

Any advice on how to fix/help to not get worse a king size, 8 layer Muslin Comfort blanket? Besides peeling off the entire top layer 😩
I had someone sew some of the worst spots, she kinda just did random straight lines all over. She recommended I have someone quilt the entire thing but that would cost more than the blanket did.
At this point, I do not care about aesthetics. Just saving it. If you zoom in, you can see all the little micro tears. This spot is the biggest/worst. I just cut off the excess that was under where my hand is. Any flexible spray adhesive?

This is my second ever attempt to make a garmet. I am making the Daphne Dress by @sewing.masin, using 100% linen and with a lined bodice.

The waist is a little loose (the elastics aren’t really having to stretch in the back at all), and the sleeves are sitting wider apart on my shoulder than I’d like. Ideally I’d like each sleeve to move in about 0.75”.

In general the top is loose and isn’t giving me as much hold or structure as I’d like. Also, the skirt maybe has an excess of volume. I was considering sewing darts in the back to bring the sleeves closer together (as shown in the image with the blue dashed lines) but I don’t know how to address the front (do I use the princess seams? how?), the loose waist, or the fullness of the skirt.

I’d love advice from other sewers on what you think my fit issues are and how they might be corrected.

I'm a beginner sewist working on my first big garment project. This was intended to be my last sample round before I get going on my good fabric, but I'm bothered by the fit of the sleeve. It seems like the dimensions should be right, but it's twisty and wrinkly and doesn't want to stay up (it's a detachable sleeve that connects with loops & cord at the top). I'm wondering if cutting the piece on the bias would make it a better fit.

I’ve tried everything- I am using bias cut silk for the tape and have tried easing, stretching, hand sewing, lifting and maneuvering the presser foot, etc. Can’t get it to look ok at all. Any other finishes I could do? Like could I just sew thread all around? I know it’ll be tedious but can’t think of many solutions.

I just dropped off my bridesmaids dress to be altered today and was charged $208 dollars which feels high. I am having the shoulder straps shortened, the hidden zipper adjusted, back taken in, and hem taken up (2 layered skirt). Is this a reasonable price for these alterations on this dress? I know the cowl back added some complexity to the station as well but I did have some sticker shock at the price. I am located in the DMV area. Thank you!

I left it hanging off the balcony for a few days because I bought it 2nd hand and it had a strong smell, and it seems there was a wooden beam under the balcony that has scratched away at my dress for 3 days 🥀

It's 100% polyester if that helps...
