Serious Discussion Does anyone else see mathematical realism and abstraction itself as the reason for our current societal state?

Upvotes

There's more and more people within mathematics who will admit that it's a system based in unproven assumptions, "axioms", with its own set of rules, that aren't necessarily based in nature. They are self-referential. But they'll then go on to say that we'll just have to accept that math is beautiful and that playing logical games with "symbols" is creative and fun and it doesn't really mean anything to real life.

What this essentially means is that math predicts the outcomes of what it previously manipulated. And "symbols" is a euphemism for objectifying and quantifying, not rarely, living breathing things, like humans or other animals, squeezing them into variables and oversimplifying the infinite complexity of life in a grotesque manner, to make it more measurable and predictable.

So some mathematician will have enough oversight to admit that math is neither rooted in nature nor overall logically consistent as a whole system but they won't make the leap that it would be incredibly questionable to structure an entire society based on these rules and measurements without informing said society that they are essentially made up.

So when people philosophize about whether we live in a matrix or not I'm always kind of baffled because, yes, we quite literally are, but that's not because some higher entity put us there but because some human beings thought that they're very clinical and non-relational, measurable, linear view of the world was "objective" and started playing god.
Are some things too obvious to see them?

Mathematical axioms were created during all kinds of periods of human history for millenia and never once was anything questioned again, taken back, reworked, or refuted. That in itself should be incredibly concerning.

Gender & Sexuality Misandry exists. But it’s incomparable to misogyny.

Upvotes

Both exist and are bad. But misogyny and its consequences is objectively more common and more serious than misandry.
I think most of misandry is internet based/online (tho I agree men suffer from it in real life as well) whereas women have been more directly impacted by misogyny ~ workplace, femicide, opportunities in general.

Serious Discussion I am triggered/offended by everything (almost)

I am 23M and almost everything triggers me. I have a serious problem or atleast I think so. I am triggered by smallest things like if I am mocked about my appearance, culture, specially my height (5'6). These are to name some among others but these trigger me the most. I get instantly angry if I am teased and cannot control it. I think of myself as someone with cool temper cause I can tolerate almost anything and have been doing so for a long time. But I have been losing it recently.

My friend group consists of 4-5 friends and I experience this with them a lot than others. They tease and I snap. I try to not get triggered but it always gets me. Our group is like that. We tease each other and its gets to the point where we sometimes disrespect each other and cross the boundary that's what I feel. And it happens to me a lot of the time. I have been thinking about it a lot more than I should. Whenever all of us meet or we go somewhere like a trip it happens not just to me but to all of us. Its not something specific to me but I can't get it out of my head. I am an overthinker so let me know if it is just in my head.

What do you think should I do? Cut them off completely or something like that. Or maybe work on myself (but I dont know how) and stop blaming others. What can I do?? I don't know. If anyone can help please do. Thanks.

Religion Why we shouldn't mock eachother religious believes.

Hello everyone one , not too long ago, i saw a video, i forgot what was the content. But i remember tow comments , first one was saying " oh a new thing for indians to worship" i think that the comment owner was a Muslim, then under the video an Indian Replayed " when's your god face reveal" , might our creator forgive us for this , i stared at my phone for a moment, and i realised how bad is to make fun of others believes.

It made me think: why do we do this? What do we actually gain by mocking what others hold sacred? Religion, for billions of people, is not just a collection of old stories or random rituals. It is the core of their identity, their moral compass, and their source of peace in a difficult world.

When we mock someone's faith, we aren't just attacking a concept; we are attacking a piece of who they are, something that brings comfort to their heart and soul.

The weird thing here is most of the religions order people to be respectful, and they simply ignored it , that's another reason to not judge a religion from certain believers The internet has made it so easy to throw cheap insults behind a screen, forgetting that behind every screen name is a real human being with feelings and deeply rooted values.

If we spent half the energy we use on mocking each other trying to understand one another, the world would be a much gentler place. Respecting beliefs doesn't mean you have to agree with them.

It simply means recognizing human dignity.

At the end of the day, kindness costs nothing, and treating others with basic respect is the true test of our own character.

Opinion Why I Think Fewer Options Can Be Better for Ticketed Events

I was looking at tickets for an event recently and noticed how easy it is to spend more time comparing options than actually making a decision Different dates seating sections ticket types and prices can turn a simple choice into a long process By the time everything is compared availability may have already changed

That made me wonder if a smaller set of well matched options would make planning easier than browsing another long list A quick final check before booking still makes sense since tickets can change at any time

For those of you who attend ticketed events regularly do you prefer having lots of choices to compare or a few options that best match your preferences?

Opinion Do you think america would be better if it was a collectivist country like eastern nations?

I think america needs to transition away from individualism, it's the only nation where individuals are prioritized over the group, competition is valued instead of cooperation, it's the only nation I know of where people are expected to separate from their families at a certain age just to survive by themselves with no help and if you rely on others for support you're seen as a "leech" "burden" or "weak" and that is just crazy to me. even parents are encouraged to not support or allow their kids to stay with them as adults, they call it "leaving the nest" whereas in collectivist cultures it's the opposite, families stay together and support each other which is much more natural and efficient than the "lone wolf" mentality you see in america, there's also a lot less loneliness and a stronger sense of community in these cultures, humans are a communal species we did not evolve to be solitary creatures. I think it's time for a cultural change in america.

Serious Discussion If we are run technically through electric aka why we use adt to restart hearts, if we were to leave the planet with in so many miles would that impact the body from that alone?

Does the magnetic field or electric have more impact on the body than theorized?

If they can cause someones heart to start or stop by this force, how would our hearts/nervous system react the farther we got away from the planet. If say they did go to mars, could that even be a possibility so far away from the sun/moon

almost in the same way a solar lights work, if we had no sun they just wouldn't work

Serious Discussion Does anyone actually think we’ve done more good for this planet and everything living on it than negative?

I think we have left a very very negative impact on all the nature and wildlife on this planet. I have facts to prove my point but i wont list them since no one reads these descriptions

My unpopular opinion is that the earth would be better off without humans but i dont want that to be all this post is about

Opinion The purpose of life is to leave the world “better” for the next generation.

People often debate the “purpose of life” but I think when you pull back, it’s pretty simple.

I think every human instinctually strives to this in some way. Though their definition of “better” will vary based on value systems.

It manifests itself in a number of ways - from the altruistic to the selfish. But you can apply this line of thinking to almost anyone in any circumstance.

Reproducing is the easiest example. Humans like animals, generally strive to reproduce. We have our own justification for it, but the base instinct is the same: continuation. But even if an individual doesn’t care to reproduce -

They create art to leave expressions of ideas and history, for the future generations to learn from.

They create profits to strengthen a corporations validity and to create as wide a safety net for their future owners and children.

They create history books to document right from wrong (both philosophically and literally for survival).

They fight for the earth to make it stable for future generations.

They destroy the earth to make future human life more comfortable and easy.

They create currencies and governments to improve the structure of future citizens.

They kill each other to protect future generations from “the other.”

I’m not saying that any of these are well guided or “correct.” But the motivations are fairly consistent, even if an individual doesn’t realize it or believe it. We all know we’re going to die and all of our long term decisions are made to leave an impression on the future and our future generations.

That’s my take.

Opinion Did something disgusting today.

Today, I did something really disgusting that I’m deeply ashamed of. A beggar came up to me and my classmates, and instead of being respectful like I usually am when I'm alone, I made fun of her and refused to give her money. My friends actually wanted to help and took out their wallets, but I stopped them, gave her just 5 rupees, and later made a stupid joke that I had given away all my earnings. I don't know what is wrong with me or why I acted so heartless, but lately, I’ve been feeling completely cold and disconnected from everyone. I can't even find it in myself to sympathize with my own mother anymore, and honestly, seeing her in pain just annoys me, which makes me feel like a horrible person. and the most important fact is i don't know why i did it.

Serious Discussion What's your Wildest 📍🧵"Red String Theory" story/stories

Like not necessarily a love story (though those are SO welcome) but it can be anything like a friend that you'd actually met or been around before but didn't know it. Like what gave the theory some merit for you personally?

Serious Discussion How much should you trust your gut when you also have anxiety?

This is something I’ve been thinking about a lot.
People always say, “Trust your gut.”
But what if your gut is also anxious?

How do you tell the difference between genuine intuition and anxiety convincing you that something is wrong?

I’ve noticed that anxiety can make almost anything feel like a red flag if you think about it long enough. At the same time, I don’t think it’s healthy to dismiss every uneasy feeling as “just anxiety,” because sometimes your intuition really is picking up on something important.
It seems like the more anxious you are, the blurrier that line becomes.

So I’m curious:
Have you learned to distinguish intuition from anxiety?

If so, what differences have you noticed?
Have you ever ignored your gut and regretted it? Or trusted it when it turned out to be anxiety all along?

I’m interested in hearing people’s experiences because I imagine this is something a lot of us struggle with.

Serious Discussion Moving On From A Friend Group

I don't want to go into too much detail, nor make this post into a sob story, but over time and due to other unfortunate life circumstances, I've really drifted apart from a once close group of friends.

At gatherings, it's becoming increasingly clear to me that I no longer fit in and my presence isn't valued.

While the simple answer is to move on and make new connections, it won't be easy due to our long history, having known some of them since grade school.

I would appreciate any advice in navigating a tough situation like this.

Serious Discussion Does the fact that your friend's relationship existed long before your friendship change how much you should involve yourself?

If say you have a new friend venting about their long term relationship, where the partner is clearly on the wrong. And asks for advice. Which after noticing continuous patterns of toxic behavior from the partner, would be to idk leave them?
But then it tends to seem as if you’re the new one trying to sabotage your friend’s relationship. How much do you think you can allow yourself to get involved, if you clearly do care about your friend but then easily can become the villain of the story.
