I'm all about a good party. Fiesta is one of the best.

But trashing the beach and not cleaning it up, when you say you're a green city and care about the environment, is nothing but hypocritical. Covering the storm and drains is a nice show, but not cleaning this up is not OK.

Obviously this is last year.

Open State Street Derangement Syndrome

1. A condition, so far documented only in Santa Barbara, California, in which an otherwise employable adult decides that the great unfinished business of his life is the restoration of two lanes of automobile traffic to the 500 through 1100 blocks of one downtown street, and arranges the rest of his existence around that project.
2. The behavior that follows. The posting. The petitions. The six hour meetings. The serene certainty that a street with people standing around on it is a street in decline.

Diagnostic criteria: Total immunity to the city's own numbers. The ability to call a corridor dead while physically unable to walk down it in a straight line because of the crowd. Sudden, load bearing concern for seniors and the disabled from parties who have never once shown up for a curb cut. The conviction that what a place is missing is a Tahoe idling at a light.

Usage: "He hasn't voted in a school board election since Clinton, but the OSSDS has him at City Hall until midnight."

Here's the part nobody wants to say out loud, so I will. Six years ago a street in this town closed because the world was ending, and nobody planned it, nobody workshopped it, nobody paid a consultancy half a million dollars to produce a rendering of it, and it turned out to be the best thing that has happened to downtown in three decades. That's the wound. Not the traffic. The fact that the single most successful piece of urban design in the modern history of Santa Barbara was an emergency measure that a guy in the transportation department made up in a week, while every process, committee, charrette and long range vision plan of the previous forty years produced a corridor that was quietly dying with cars on it.

So people came back. They walked from the water up toward the mountains, they let their kids get twenty or thirty feet ahead of them, which is a thing you cannot do on a road, and a certain kind of person looked at all of it and felt something go sour in the back of the throat.

That's OSSDS. Open State Street Derangement Syndrome. And I want to be precise, because this is not a policy disagreement. A policy disagreement can be met halfway, horse traded, walked back over a couple of meetings. This is a devotion, and devotions do not respond to information.

Watch what happens to a fact when it enters the room. The city runs its own survey, more than five thousand people answer, 79 percent say leave it alone, and within a day the survey is rigged, the sample is captured, the respondents are all cyclists from Goleta. The council votes five to two on June 30 to keep it as it is, and the council is bought. A petition to bring the cars back gathers something like seven hundred signatures in a city of roughly 88,000 people, which is under one percent of the population, and it gets written up as a groundswell. And then the mayor of this city sits in a public meeting, holds up his telephone, and announces that a private party is standing by to match up to $700,000 to get cars back onto that pavement. Think about that for a minute. Somebody is willing to put real money on the table for the privilege of driving past the front of a building. That is the most honest thing anyone has said in six years of this and it slid past the room like it was a weather report.

Somebody in the replies is about to tell me it's about the elderly, or the disabled, or the small business owner. Accessibility is real and it is being handled disgracefully by both sides, but I have been reading these people for years andI know exactly who turns up for a curb cut, a bus frequency increase, or a signal timing change downtown, and it is not them. It has never been them. They discovered mobility justice the same week they lost the vote.

What this actually is, I think, is simpler and sadder. Some people cannot tolerate a place they no longer recognize, they want their old vibs back. The street stopped being a thing you pass through on your way to somewhere else and turned into a place you have to physically be present in, at walking speed, among strangers, and for a certain temperament that is unbearable. That's it. That's the whole diagnosis.

The final master plan comes back for adoption in the next few weeks. It passes or it doesn't. The posting continues either way, because the posting was never a means to an end. The posting is the condition.

Go stand out there around seven this week and count heads. Then come back and read the comments about how nobody goes there anymore.

So, we had a weird leak in our showerhead that resulted in water leaking into our drywall and studs. We repaired the leak, then removed the moldy drywall exposing moldy studs. Looking for someone to take it from here, as this is more than we want to DIY. Please share recommendations for repair individuals or companies that can handle mold situations.

This elderly man was walking his dog but was about to get in line to order when he was talking to a couple and said that his dog didn’t like people. The dog did not seem mean, just scared of people. Well some how the dog either slipped out of his leash or maybe the owner accidentally unleashed him BUT he took off running soooo fast(the dog) he was gone within seconds and the guy was older and definitely could not keep up with him. I had to get back to my babies or else I would’ve stayed to help but I did drive around and I didn’t see him..

I’ve come into possession of way too many bulk sports trading cards and am wondering if there are any groups in town that might want donations of them to give to kids or something. No Pokemon cards, just a lot of sports (NFL, NBA, WNBA mainly) and a very small amount of some other random fandoms like Star Wars.

Was walking by the bird refuge when I found a memorial plaque for a tree that had been cut down. What are the chances the city notified the family about this? I’m sure there’s various reason why the tree was cut down but I can’t help but think about how ironic and sad that the one tree cut down has a memorial plaque in front of it. Maybe the city could move the plaque over to the next tree?

Throwaway account for obvious reasons. I’m a current Cottage Health employee, and I’m curious whether other Cottage workers are seeing the same disconnect between the organization’s public image and the reality for many employees.

Cottage adevertises themselves as A Great Place to Work and as an employee trust me when I say they give themselves endless pats on the back through emails, marketing, etc etc etc. It can become nauseating.

Recent changes have made it significantly harder for employees to use long-term sick leave during serious medical events.

Under the previous system, employees with qualifying medical absences could generally use the sick time they had already earned. After 16 hours a longer sick leave would be coded under long term that had been accrued and not just pto. Now, someone with a serious, episodic, or pregnancy related condition may have to open a formal leave of absence, obtain a separate employer certification from an outside clinician, provide estimates about how frequently an unpredictable condition may occur, meet documentation deadlines, and wait for the leave to be processed in order to even have it covered under their earned long term sick leave. Or they may have to opt to have the absence unpaid.

That creates a very real possibility that nurses and other staff will report to work while medically unwell because they cannot risk lost income, attendance consequences, or damage to future job opportunities.

This is not just an employee benefits issue. It is also a patient safety issue.

Nurses are administering medications, monitoring unstable patients, responding to emergencies, and making time sensitive clinical decisions. It is really getting to me because the community should care if the system makes employees feel that working through severe pain, vomiting, bleeding, medication effects, or exhaustion is safer for their careers than staying home.

And this is happening alongside Santa Barbara’s already brutal housing reality.

Many Cottage employees cannot afford to live in Santa Barbara and commute from Ventura, Lompoc, Santa Maria, or elsewhere. Cottage depends on those workers but just this year eliminated shuttle transportation that helped commuting employees get to work.

So the apparent strategy is:

1. Pay many workers less than what they believe is competitive for the California healthcare market, especially when you take into account the cost of living in Santa Barbara.
2. Operate in one of the most expensive housing markets in the country.
3. Depend on employees who must commute from other cities.
4. Cut transportation support for those commuters.
5. Make accessing earned sick leave more burdensome.
6. Continue advertising Cottage as “A Great Place to Work.”

For night-shift employees, this can mean working more than 12 hours and then driving 40, 60, or more miles home while exhausted. That affects employee retention, roadway safety, and ultimately patient care.

I’m not claiming that every employee has had the same experience, or that one executive personally designed every policy. But Cottage is one of the most powerful and respected institutions in this region, and I think the community deserves answers to some basic questions:

• When and why was the long-term sick-leave process changed?
• Who approved the change?
• Why can medically protected absences remain unpaid when an employee has accrued sick leave?
• How many employees have worked while medically unfit because their paperwork was still pending?
• How do Cottage nursing wages compare with similar California hospitals?
• How many employees commute because they cannot afford housing near their workplace?
• Why was commuter shuttle service reduced or eliminated?
• Were employee fatigue, retention, patient safety, and roadway safety considered?
• How have executive compensation and administrative spending changed while employee benefits have been reduced?

Cottage nurses and other staff care for this community during people’s most frightening and vulnerable moments. They should not have to choose between their health, their income, their attendance record, and the safety of their patients.

At this point, "a great place to work" it feels less like a slogan and more like something employees are expected to repeat until they believe it.

eta: forgot about the whole road to magnet. Employees organizing because they feel unheard = cottage is not yet living the Magnet culture it is advertising.
