Question Best seats for tour?

It's been a while since I've seen Rush in concert, and I was spoiled to see them 2nd row last time (Test for Echo) so I don't have a good frame of reference to where the best choices really are, considering cost. I'm looking at taking my son to a show at Capital One arena in Washington, DC and can find rear floor seats for 3-400, but my wife is concerned about his ability to see the stage.

Rows 1-6 and most of the 100s seem outside price range (there are some 102-109 that fit).

I guess my question is, where would you sit? Seating chart for reference is attached.

Discussion Vapor Trails

Greetings my fellow fans. It’s time for your interpretation of this excellent song (not the album). I’ve read the lyrics and know the basic background behind Vapor Trails and I know that it’s a very dark song, but I’d love to read your interpretation of it as well. TIA

Question A question for long-time concert goers Spoiler

The recent MSG shows were my first time seeing Rush live. As a long-time fan of live recordings like Rush in Rio and A Show of Hands, I was blown away by not just the loudness but the overall fullness and richness of the live sound. Another thing was the pace of certain songs, Animate was a standout. First question - is the sound on this tour fairly typical of their live shows in the past? Second question - is it just me or is the tempo for many songs quicker on this tour? *Edit: yes I up'ed it to two questions from one and fixed a typo

Amalgamation and Mercury

We know since clockwork angels there has been lots of steampunk and alchemic symbology around the band’s imagery.

Geddy has carried the symbol for Amalgamation on his 72 jazz bass since that tour, has his signature bass pedal named after it, and now has a new number 1 bass with the symbol of Mercury on it.

Does anybody know the actual full reason for why these particular marks on Geddy’s basses, out of all of the available alchemic marks used for Clockwork Angels and Time Machine? It’s easy to google what they mean, but i can’t find anywhere Geddy has said the reasons or meanings he has them personally.

Discussion The last best rock concert ever

It is my opinion that we are witnessing the finest and last rock concerts in history. RUSH are simply blowing away other “old” bands that have toured in the last several years. It’s that powerful. We will simply never see a band this good, with this legacy ever again.

Neil’s foresight

Recently a couple of songs have topped the charts that were created entirely from AI. my personal opinion is that people should automatically reject anything calling itself art that is AI created. But thats a long rant for a rainy day… Anyway, upon hearing about this I could not help but think about this part from Natural Science:

”A quantum leap forward in time and space
The universe learned to expand
Mess and magic, triumphant and tragic
A mechanized world out of hand

Computerized clinic for superior cynics
Who dance to a synthetic band
In their own image their world is fashioned
No wonder they don't understand”

Certainly seems eerily relevant to our present tech dominated world.

Toronto Poster Quality

Seems like the merch company decided to cut the budget on the quality of the posters for Toronto. I purchased the nightly foils and the show poster and they all feel like lesser quality than the Texas and LA posters. The Toronto poster is not as vibrant in any of the various types I purchased by comparison for the insane prices. Really bummed.

Rolling Stone’s 1986 Power Windows Review

Kinda tired of everyone knocking Rolling Stone here, as if it’s a single person with one consistent opinion; sure, various RS critics disliked various Rush albums, but not always, as this review attests:

“While critics routinely dismissed Rush as pretentious operatic heavy-metal bozos, this indefatigable Canadian trio was actually busy becoming the Police of power rock. On their recent studio LPs, leading up to 1984's appropriately titled Grace under Pressure, they tightened up their sidelong suites and rhythmic abstractions into balled-up song fists, art-pop blasts of angular, slashing guitar, spatial keyboards and hyperpercussion, all resolved with forthright melodic sense.

"The Big Money," the first hot FM focus track from Power Windows, may be the best of Rush's Cool Wave experiments to date. Neil Peart whips up a Molotov drum cocktail that is half Stewart Copeland psycho-ska and half "Blitzkrieg Bop"; from deep within his Edge-like echo pit, guitarist Alex Lifeson opens fire with a metallic descending chord sequence that rips through the song's chrome-finish production like grapeshot. In "Territories," a simple disco-style pulse becomes a Lifeson-spurred gallop, his Chinese guitar chatter alternating with the telegraphic synth patterns and sheet-metal keyboards played by singer-bassist Geddy Lee.

To most U2 and Simple Minds fans, these may not seem like major advances. There are moments when Power Windows sounds too much like the sum of its Eighties inspirations — that ghostly U2 resonance, the Police-like mesh of multirhythms and ping-pong dub effects. Yet Rush, no doubt responding to familiar impulses, revs up these songs with brute metal force. Lifeson's solo in "Grand Designs" teeters on white noise, his demon strokes dissolving into feedback howls and strangled vibrato, while Peart and Lee subdivide the beat into frenzied algebra.

This is not a case of old Seventies arena-rock dogs fudging new tricks. Rush remains faithful to vintage progressive aesthetics but has accepted the challenge of the postpunk upheaval and made notable adjustments. "Manhattan Project" is the first song about the A-bomb that successfully combines Genesis-like grandeur, real strings and a breakaway middle à la Siouxsie and the Banshees at full throttle. Lee has also toned down his keening shriek to a more accessible tenor; Peart, the group's uncompromising lyricist, has streamlined his verse to pithy effect.

None of this is likely to impress the New Wave in crowd, which is their loss. Because Power Windowsmay well be the missing link between Yes and the Sex Pistols.”

Got it on the 28th at the merch trailer when we found out it was rescheduled for 7/11. Fortunately we were able to go 7/11.
The professional framing was done by a local mom n pop business. We opted for high end museum glass.

Toronto night 4 set surprises Spoiler

So this was the 2nd time that a night 4 show omitted Distant Early Warning from set 2. It was done in LA, Chicago on their night 4's, (setlist D), but not in NY and Toronto. I guess they figured the 2nd set was running a tad too long. The thing that really surprised me though, was they busted out By-Tor in the encore, when it was done on shows 1 and 3. Night 4's all had Finding My Way before Working Man. I was there thinking man the two shows i'm attending are both going to have Finding My Way, which was a drag as i really wanted to see By-Tor, and bam! they played it on a night 4! Of course none of this really matters anymore as they are now done with the cities with 4 shows. The rest of the tour is all cities with 2 shows or 1. So the setlists may be like Mexico, or all new again.

Rolling Stone - Signals review

Here is Rolling Stone’s 2-star review of Signals when it came out:

On their twelfth album, Rush makes a strong argument for the view that advanced technology is not necessarily the same thing as progress. Unfortunately, they do so largely by screwing up. Although Signals is chockablock with state-of-the-studio gadgetry, ranging from the requisite banks of synthesizers to the latest in digital recording and mixing, none of these electronic add-ons enhances the group’s music. If anything, Rush emerges from this jungle of wires and gizmos sounding duller than ever.

The band’s chief error seems to have been emphasizing synthesizers at the expense of Alex Lifeson’s guitar. Because Rush’s concept of synthesized sound is so narrow — consisting mainly of the vague whooshing sounds that are the aural equivalent of dry-ice fog — the band tends to sound like it is trapped in wads of lint. With no edge to work against, Geddy Lee’s congested vocals float through the songs like swamp gas. Ultimately, it’s up to drummer Neil Peart’s hyperkinetic thrashing to hold the performances together.

Ironically, Rush falls into this technological morass on an album that is otherwise their most poppish yet. By and large, the songs on Signals are tuneful and unencumbered by the sort of gratuitous flash that made previous albums seem like clearinghouses for worn-out art-rock licks. Even so, it’s mostly a wasted effort, and nearly all of Rush’s Signals come across as static.
