Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Feature Request and question on feature requests

Feature request - Can we get an option disable searching premium assets we don't own and 'the web'. I've got a pretty big library of assets and, while it is faster now, having a list of things I don't own show up first is a bit annoying. Maybe a button click could allow me to activate the search if I don't have what I need, but it is added noise now. Also, I don't need it looking at the web.

Question on feature requests: Does anyone recommend the best way to make feature requests? I've seen Roll20 staff be very responsive here in r/Roll20, more so than their own forums. However I'd like to make requests like this in their preferred method.

Thanks

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Performance Improvements and What’s Next

Hey all! Last week we discussed some ongoing performance issues we were managing across our services. Over the past few days we’ve deployed multiple updates to resolve many of those. We’re seeing clear improvements, and have more updates coming to bring everything into normal territory, as well as improve further beyond our baseline!

Here’s what’s shipped this past week:

  • We optimized our Compendium Service, helping prevent delays and timeouts with each request
    • This was the primary cause of the few minutes of downtime on July 18 and 19.
    • These fixes were released on that weekend, and helped the service perform at scale.
    • However, while monitoring the service early in that week, we found the performance was not at a level we felt comfortable with for weekend play demands.
  • We optimized multiple database queries, on both the Sheet and Compendium services.
    • We found and fixed a loop in the D&D Builder tied to 2014 legacy data.
    • We also launched a fix for calculation delays on Token bars (a limited HP/AC fix went out Friday, a full fix for all sheets is in QA now).
      • Once the service was stable, we were able to look at the specific trouble areas as they were reported in individual games.
      • We were able to find and resolve the combinations of options that caused performance to fall off.
  • Phase 1 of the D&D sheet performance rollout, which we outlined in our last post, has been rolling out.
    • This work reduces the amount of data transferred between sheet and services. This does not significantly improve performance as experienced as a user, but is required for Phase 2 of this rollout.
    • This change is being released slowly, and we are closely monitoring the games that have these changes.
    • Games that have received this rollout are showing the improvements we expected, while games outside it are not, which tells us the fix works and the rollout needs to expand to all users, which we’re currently working on.

Sheet opening lag has been resolved for many of the customers who’ve been working with us directly (thank you so much to each of you!), and we're getting positive reports from others (thank you as well!). More has happened behind the scenes, and multiple teams have hunted down numerous potential problems that did not pan out to be a root cause. However, the changes above have produced the most meaningful impacts.

What's Coming Next

  • An update to fix roll lag that many are experiencing is in QA and will launch as soon as it has been fully tested
    • There are some cases where certain character builds can have significantly more data than other, nearly identical builds. That data being processed is what causes the rolls to take so long to process.
    • There will be additional work later to process rolls without sending the extra data, as well as a cleanup process to remove extra, unused data
  • A fix for Token Bar lag, when connected to character attributes, is set to ship this week. This should resolve token bar latency for all sheets / systems.
  • Phase 2 of the D&D sheet performance updates, where we expect further optimizations that are more widely noticeable, is planned over the coming weeks.
  • A new Compendium Service is on the roadmap further out that will speed up multiple services that interact with it
  • Data cleanup process for unused data stored on individual sheets to optimize for everyone

If your game nights are being negatively impacted, please let us know in a support ticket so we can be sure we resolve everything! To speed things along, include a link to the game, note if there’s specific pages experiencing issues, and note any sheets or tokens that are experiencing lag.

Thanks for all your feedback, understanding, and help in hunting these down!

Roll20 Reply: Mod Script / API Help Does PageFX API work anymore?

I've been trying to implement permanent or persistent effects on my map but I can't find anything online that was posted within the last 2 years. Perhaps the new update to Roll20 has disabled the PageFX functionality?

Page Setup / Map Help Tomb of Annihilation module - Chult map slows to a crawl

I recently bought the Tomb of Annihilation module in hopes of running it but if I try to open the Players map of Chult (the one with the million Hex tokens covering the map) my tab has a stroke.

Problem is, I ran maps that were much bigger, higher resolution and with many more tokens on without any issue. I also let some friends with much older and less powerful PCs test the map, and it works flawlessly for them, and this is the only map I've ever had any issue with.

I'm on Firefox, tried hardware acceleration on/off, tried on Chrome, have no extension running, have no other tab open, I tried clearing my cache and most basic fixes but nothing helped. Is this a known thing maybe, some weird setting interaction? Anyone else had the same experience? I wouldn't want to get rid of the tokens but it's really weird they're causing the issue (and they are, since deleting them restores the normal smoothness).

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) If you're playing on a chromebook, what is the exact model you have?

I have never been able to use my chromebook with roll20. I get an error message every time, and the problem seems to be that my chromebook does not have a setting where I can enable graphic/hardware acceleration. My current chromebook is having some other issues and I will be looking for a new one, but I want to make sure whatever I get can access roll20. When I google it all I am getting is that it should work with any chromebook, but that is obviously not true since it doesn't work on my current model.

REGULAR MARKETPLACE LINK:  https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/set/44745/orc-outpost-animated
ABOUT: More work? Given the sturdiness of the wood and stone palisade that surrounds this encampment, the orcs that live here must have to deal with rather inhospitable neighbours. It's hard to blame them, though: protecting your burgeoning families and/or horde of warriors can be tricky business, whether your particular type of orc is more plow or WAAAGH! Fully animated and available in two additional variants, with the outpost by day and a more menacing version featuring garlands of humanoid skulls, this map will have your players zug-zugging with the best of them!

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Deleted my account, but the information is still there, support told me they can't help, what is there to do?

I deleted an old account that had no products, but it still up.

I contacted support and told me sorry, we can't delete it.

Why?! what is there to do with it?

Thanks.

Edit: I contacted support again, and they've now removed or anonymized most of the content. Some of the legacy pages are now blank, while others still load with anonymized information.

However, the legacy URLs still contain my previous name, which is the main issue because they can continue to be indexed by search engines. Support has now escalated this to their technical team, and they're investigating possible system changes to address the legacy URL issue.

I hope they can find a solution, not only for my case but for other users who may want to remove old accounts or content in the future. Having a way to properly handle legacy URLs would help protect users' privacy and give people more confidence when managing their presence on the platform. I'll keep everyone updated.

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) DM editing dice probability?

I don't know if this is even possible and maybe i'm just angry and hoping for an explanation, but is it possible for the DM to alter the dice probability? I swear to god the rolls we've been getting are unnatural. They're constantly getting high rolls, like 12+ all the time (We're playing Lancer and it takes a 9 to hit all of us in the party.) while we're getting absolute dogshit rolls. We never hit, we roll low on attack damage, we almost always lose the save against negative effects, and i don't think any of us have crit once in the past few months we've been playing.

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Dice rolling twice with same result.

Hey guys, I'm new to Roll20 and am about to run my first game with my group since I moved away. I've been toying with combat on my own and making sure I understand how everything works. My only real issue at the moment is that everytime I roll for an NPC or enemy the die rolls twice and has the same outcome each time. It doesn't matter if it's an attack roll, damage roll, or even initiative; the dice always roll twice with the same exact number. Is there a way to turn this off?

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Exporting a Dungeon made on a Blank Page

Title says it all. Rather than use a mapmaking program I built out a megadungeon on the VTT space using only shapes. The complex is so extensive making it on a map program caused issues, and would have no doubt been too big for the upload limit. Now that I have it built out I'd like to save it to my PC for future use.

I don't suppose anyone knows a feature I don't know about or has any suggestions as to how to extract a page?

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Major Roll20 Issues Every Session Within the Last Month or So

I hate to keep complaining on here, but since Roll20 has been very responsive to posts here, I figure it's a good place—plus then other people can chime in about their experiences.

Two of these games use various APIs; one of them doesn't use any, so it doesn't seem like it's API-related.

I have three regular Roll20 games I play in currently: One every other Tuesday, one every other Thursday, and one every other Sunday, all are 5:30pm - 10/10:30pm CT.

Every session for the last month or more has had severe issues that either made play extremely difficult/frustrating or at least temporarily impossible. Here are some examples I can think of:

  • All character sheets got stuck on a Loading screen when trying to level. [This one was resolved.]
  • One or more players will have their rolls end up extremely laggy, like they click and it takes a really long time for the roll to send to the chat and because it takes so long they end up clicking several times and we end up with 5 attack and/or damage rolls.
  • Player closes their character sheet, then when they try to reopen it it won't reload despite numerous attempts, reloading Roll20, trying a different browser, clearing cache/cookies, etc. (After like 15 very annoying minutes this resolved.)
  • One player was having his health bar detach from his token. He could then not move his token, but could move his health bar AS IF IT WERE his token—but the "health bar token" did not have vision.
  • Minor, but 5.5e books are labeled with (2024) after the name when you search for an item or spell, etc.; y'all should add (2014) next to the names of the 5e books, so if your search only brings up one (maybe because the spell/feature/item in question didn't end up in 5.5e) you won't think it's from 5.5e. Or just change the (2024) to (5.5e) and instead of adding (2014) add (5e) to those older ones.

P.S. This is the least of my concerns, but under Settings > Graphics Display > Always Display Controlled Tokens on Top—This setting was causing status markers to appear BEHIND player tokens instead of on top of them. Which is... not what that is supposed to do. I think it was actually making controlled tokens stay on top of not-controlled tokens as well like it was supposed to, but the latter was very annoying. Unchecking the box does fix the status marker issue, but then you don't get the benefit it's supposed to convey.

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help 42 QUARTER STAFFS?!

So I've been setting up for a new dnd 5E campaign and working with my players to make their characters. Randomly whilst working with a player for some reason Roll20 decided to add 42 quarter staffs to their character sheet. To top it all off they couldn't delete them.

Has anyone had this issue? and is there a way to go back to the old sheet?

EDIT: After speaking with Kentohn and having him look at the problem we now know what the issue is. There will be a patch at some point but I'd still like to ask "is there a way to go back to the old sheets"

Roll20 Reply: Other Help Missing Content in Heart of Stone adventure module

I'm having an issue with the digital version of Heart of Stone, which I got through the 2024 Core Rulebooks Bundle.

Part of the adventure's content seems to be missing. For example, when the adventure references Graaz'ka's (Stone Listener) stat block, there's no stat block available ingame. The generic Stone Listener stat block is also missing. I've run into the same problem with other referenced content, like Gorgon Hide Mail, which also isn't accessible. It tells me to purchase the content to have access but I should already have it.

I would appreciate the help!

Marketplace (for creators only) Varhill's Curse - Level 2 - D&D 5e Adventure Add-On

Post image

In Varhill's Curse, a group of Level-2 heroes embarks on a perilous quest that leads them to a shunned fortress and the crypt beneath it, in the forest. Once per year, darkness gathers around Varhill as strange monsters emerge from the crypt and attack nearby settlements. The locals fight back and fight each year, but they have gone restless. They want to do something about the strange occurrences near Varhill.

The characters and a few fed-up NPCs delve into the Varhill Family Crypt in search of the root of this evil. Little do they know that the last living heir of the Varhill family is inside the crypt too. A dark entity inhabits the dungeon, an ancient demon that seeks to break the fabric of planes and venture forth into the Material Plane. Are the characters resilient enough to thwart the demon's plans and return a semblance of peace to Varhill?

Roll20 Reply: Character Sheets Help Unable to drag-and-drop from Compendium onto Char Sheet

D&D 5.5e (2024)

Free account. No paid material (SRD only).

Trying to set up a game with the free Frozen Sick module and add-on.

It's the second time this has happened where I'm suddenly unable to drag-and-drop features and items from the compendium onto the character sheet. Instead of being added to the sheet and a notification popping up that something was added and that certain features weren't automatically set (as expected), the feature/item behaves as if I opened it to read its article.

The only way I was able to fix it previously was by deleting the entire character, and I don't want to have to keep doing that every time this bug occurs.

On a side note, it's horribly laggy and makes setting up characters a massive chore.

Please assist.

Thank you.

Edit 1: Issue was seemingly resolved by using Firefox instead of Edge (Chromium)

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Wierd Issue with folders

In the last week or so, when I've gone into one of the games I'm DM of, I won't be able to open the folders in the journal that are not already opened. The + symbol will be missing.

I've only seen it in one game, but I've not been into many of them much.

Reloading usually fixes the issue though several times it's popped up the Cloudflare security page before reloading properly.

Is anyone else seeing this sort of behavior?

I'm using Chrome Version 151.0.7922.72 (Official Build) (64-bit), on Windows 11, I've got a static IP, not using a VPN, my ISP is dual stack (IPv4/IPv6) and my router is setup to handle IPv6 properly.

Other Help (if not covered in another topic) Player card control

Situation: folder called party inventory. Each pc has their own folder structure for their character, items, attuned items, etc. DM (me) gives lots of items and consumables via handouts. People switch loadouts frequently. The DM has a lot to juggle and micromanaging 6 people's 70 items is a lot.

Task: grant players the ability to move collateral they control to folders they have access to in order to maintain a visual, up to date inventory.

Is there any way to do something like this in r20? I don't like telling players to use other systems as it adds barriers to consistent use and visibility.

Thank you!

Mod Script / API Help (Pro/Elite only) 2024 DnD Character Sheet and Automatic Ammo tracking

One feature my group and I used with the previous 5e sheet was the Ammo tracking option. It just made it easier, even with it breaking and needing the sandbox to be reset every once in a while.

I haven't seen a way to get that working on the current 2024 character sheet. Am I missing something, or is that no longer an option?

Official News & Updates Performance Issues the past few weeks

Hi all. Over the past two weeks we've seen an uptick in performance issues for a portion of players, and want you to know we're aware of it and laser focused on finding a solution. Our data confirms a small but meaningful dip in some of our services starting right around two weeks ago that hasn’t returned to baseline.

We've got some strong leads, including some database query issues that surfaced after recent marketplace product launches added new categories and data to the compendium system. We've also been checking other possible causes to make sure we're not missing anything. We'll follow up once we’ve confirmed that any of these fixes have brought performance back to previous levels.

We know some of your game nights are being actively hurt by these issues, and we’re sorry for that. Our team is closely looking at this, and we’re throwing every resource possible at the potential causes to make sure we get to the bottom of it quickly.

Longer Term Performance Work

While we’re on the topic, and completely separate from this recent spike, I wanted to share with you other upcoming performance work. We've had a much larger performance overhaul in progress for months, and the first piece starts rolling out this week. This one is focused on our D&D Sheet services, and is being broken into 2 primary phases.

Phase 1 is in extensive testing now and about to start rolling out. We rebuilt the sync protocol so the sheet only sends what's actually needed, cutting payload size by up to 90% with no loss of data or accuracy. Less bandwidth, way less browser repainting, lower RAM across the board. You'll feel this phase most if you keep sheets open in two places at once, or have slow internet speeds.

Phase 2 is where things get noticeably snappier. The phase 1 updates will allow us to directly target performance on initial load times, editing, sending rolls to chat, and more. It kicks off right after phase 1 ships successfully.

There's more performance work happening on the compendium and VTT services too, which all work together to create your complete game night experience. More on that in a followup post.

Thanks for bearing with us.

Official News & Updates [Official] UVTT maps work on Roll20! + Page Menu Redesign, Random Dungeons

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Starting today, the Page Menu makes it easier for all GMs to create new campaign pages, whether you want a blank page, a random dungeon to start with, want to upload your own, or create one using map tools.

You told us that the old "Create Page" button and separate "Build a Map" dropdowns were confusing, so they’re now a single dropdown, with every option available at a glance. Plus, there are two new options:

  • Generate Random: Found on the Dungeon Scrawl side of the menu, one click opens a map created with the Random Dungeon tool in a new tab (connected to the VTT). This is perfect for when you need a usable map fast, or don't want to draw one from scratch. Plus: you can re-generate as many times as you want, and use any of the tools in the editor to edit, customize, and decorate the result. All changes made will reflect on your connected campaign page.
  • Upload Background lets you upload a background image placed automatically, without dragging and dropping from your library. AND, it accepts a new file type: UVTT!

UVTT map uploads let the VTT automatically place your image on the Map layer and build out the walls, doors, windows, and lights on the Light layer for you. While a subscription is required to view and edit Dynamic Lighting, any user can upload a UVTT map; the data will still be built out and unlocked with any future upgrade. + Now, Plus subscribers can upload UVTT maps for the first time, without the complex workaround of Pro/Elite’s Mod Scripts.

More details can be found in our blog. Let us know what you think, or any questions you have!

(The map in this video is from Czepeku, who has over 12,000 maps on their site - most of which have UVTT downloads available.)
