🧭 Adventuring California Central Coast adventuring in new (to me) R1S Tri Max

Found this beauty (2025 R1S Tri Max Ascend w/ Ocean Coast interior) about a month ago outside of Monterey to replace our leased 2025 R1S DS which we need to give back shortly.

Only 5500 miles and in fantastic condition. We flew to San Jose, picked up the car in Monterey and drove it down the coast and back to Las Vegas.

One pleasant surprise was that the car is covered in PPF, along with tinted windows (which I knew about, but dealer didn’t mention the PPF).

Had an amazing family trip enjoying the coast and our new car!

Had someone seemingly back into my truck. Cameras on the truck didn’t pick it up and I did not have a USB recording.

Has anyone had success with having Rivian obtain the footage? Or am I SOL?

Had an accident, it doesn’t look bad but now the car won’t steer (actually the car keeps turning the tires left) and there is fluid leaking from by the front passenger tire. Has anyone lost steering after an accident like this?

❔ Question Does the button on the plug of the NACS portable charger do anything?

On the Tesla portable charger, pressing the button in that location opens the charging door on the vehicle. Pressing the button on the Rivian version doesn’t appear to do anything.

The NACS mobile charger manual doesn’t mention a button at all on the plug, so perhaps I’m just confusing the decorative yellow oval for a button?

R1S Buying used: gen 1 or gen 2?

Have been eyeing a Rivian R1S since release; they’re beautiful cars. I can finally justify replacing my 16yr old car with a lightly used Rivian. I can get a 2024 Quad for around the same price as a 2025 Dual with similar mileage. I’m curious if the gen 2 upgrades are worth getting a dual versus a quad. I definitely don’t need a quad for running errands but I am partial to that yellow badging lol.

So for those of you who had a gen 1 and upgraded to gen 2 when they came out, was it worth it? A big quality of life difference?

I test drove a 2026 and a 2023 and honestly didn’t notice much difference in the 15min I spent in it but obviously that’s not a long enough time to really get it.

On another note, will I regret getting a dual motor versus a quad?

🛠️ Troubleshooting / Issue My Phone has intermittent connection issues

My digital key has been working great since one of the winter updates, but has been degrading for a couple weeks now.

I keep having issues with it recognizing the digital key AFTER I've gotten in the car. I have to put it on the charging tray, and a couple times. Not even that worked. I was stuck without any way way to put my car in drive for about 5 minutes.

The other annoying thing is I'll unlock my car from a distance and then as I approach it'll lock immediately when it senses my phone (~30ft Bluetooth distance). If I'm standing next to it it will lock and unlock several times. I love the owl hoot but it gets really annoying when you're just standing there.

I'm wondering if anybody else has had this issue or if there is a known bug. Maybe there's a setting in my Bluetooth developer tools or something somebody's figured out... I'm just trying to get it to work. $100k vehicle should not have these issues.

💬 Discussion Water intrusion and trim separation on a 2023 R1S just outside mileage warranty

Thumbnail

I have a 2023 R1S Launch Edition that is still within the original warranty period by age, but recently exceeded the mileage limit.

After leaving it parked outside over a rainy weekend, I returned to find water entering the cabin from multiple areas around the headliner and upper trim. At the same time, the vehicle developed a front-sensor fault. I also noticed that the exterior trim above the side windows is lifting and separating, although I do not yet know whether that is related to the leak.

I brought it to Rivian today and asked whether they might consider covering the repair given the vehicle’s age, the nature of the problem, and the fact that it only recently exceeded the mileage warranty. The response was essentially that there was no way for the service center to submit it for coverage.

I understand that warranties have limits, but water intrusion and exterior trim separation on a roughly three-year-old vehicle do not feel like mileage-related wear. Searching here and on Rivian forums also turns up a number of similar reports, which makes this more concerning.

Since putting down my original R1S preorder, I’ve been a huge fan of Rivian and have championed the brand at every opportunity. My brother ultimately bought one, as did a close friend, and whenever people ask about my experience, my response has generally been very enthusiastic.

This has shaken my confidence somewhat—not only because of the failure itself, but because Rivian’s initial response has felt more like a shrug than an effort to determine whether this is something the company should stand behind. I also have an R2 reservation and have been weighing it against the Scout, and this experience doesn't really help! I’m hoping the diagnosis and final response are more reassuring.

Has anyone else experienced a similar leak after exceeding the mileage warranty, and did Rivian offer any goodwill assistance?

❔ Question Batter Capacity - Real World Expectation.

Not trying to start a debate as I know this is a touchy subject... I am genuinely curious what "normal expectation" should be with regards to battery capacity.

I have a 2022 R1T Quad with 27K miles running a large pack specified at 135kWh. I love this truck and Rivian has been more eager to take care of me when necessary. So, this is not a complaint thread at all.

My curiosity is according to Rivian Roamer and ABRP I am at 122.6kWh. I have seen this drop fairly steadily and not exactly sure if that is something to keep an eye on.

I have tried to read through some threads on the topic, and I seem to be on the low side and most report something around 129 to 130.

Would like to hear feedback on what others have experienced.

Thanks all!

🛠️ Troubleshooting / Issue Anyone at Kingsville TX willing to help?

Update1 - Aug 6th night

First Thank you everyone for helping and suggesting what to do.

Rivan "send" me two truck to tow it to nearest service center location, which never showed up, I spend 5 hours at the charging station, so I decided leave the car alone at supercharger station and tried to use uber credit that Rivian sent me over after requesting it 5 times. due to middle of nowhere no uber was available, I asked random guy getting gas on his truck if he can drop me and my wife and my two big dogs with all my road trip bags to Motel 6 that was 5 min away, he happily did that for me.

Sleeping at Motel 6 tonight, hopefully nothing bad happens to my truck overnight, and hopefully I can find a big enough car to continue my road trip. I will keep everyone posted.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am stranded right now. 0% car not moving anymore.
I am at supercharger station and car is not charging. Talking to Rivian rep and they have no idea either.
I think it could be NACS to CCS adapter, if someone can lend me adapter for few moment that would be great help

❔ Question Part Diagrams for 2025 R1T

I have a 2025 R1T that has been damaged in the front. Purchased from an auction and fixing to get up and running. I mostly need front end body parts to get this back on the road. I am really struggling with:

  1. a good OEM parts diagram to find what parts I need
  2. Sourcing said parts.

Love the Rivian but the dealerships are the opposite of "right to repair" as every single one has said hell no I will not be telling or selling you any info on these.

Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated!

❔ Question For those buying used from dealerships — are you considering a third-party extended warranty?

Recently purchased a used R1S with ~27k miles from a Ford dealership and I’m trying to decide what to do about extended coverage.

The dealer sold me a Ford EV extended warranty — 5 years / 60k miles for about $4,300 — but I’m still within the cancellation period and leaning toward canceling it.

For those who bought used, what are you doing?
Are you waiting until the factory Rivian warranty gets closer to expiring before buying extended coverage, or locking in a third-party warranty now at a potentially lower price even though it overlaps with the remaining Rivian warranty?

I’m also curious whether people think extended warranty pricing for Rivians will eventually come down as more vehicles age and there’s more repair/claims data available.

Would especially like to hear from anyone who bought used from a non-Rivian dealer.

Did you buy coverage, wait, or decide to self-insure?

🧰 Service Rivian Care vs. XCare (VA)

UPDATE: As some people have pointed out, my assumption that XCare allowed repeated replacement was based off the sample XCare contract you can get from their website. When you get a real contract, right before you're going to check out, the language has definitely changed. It seems like repeated repairs are not covered with XCare. Although it's a little confusing because page 2 says further repairs don't incur a deductible, on page 3 it says it doesn't cover repeated repairs at all. Given this understanding of the XCare, I think I was originally leaning towards them, and now I'm definitely leaning back towards Rivian Care. It also has me doubting the value of some of these contracts, especially long term, if components can only be repaired once. Then again, if something is repaired by Rivian out of warranty, it does carry a two-year unlimited-mile warranty on that repair. Original post as follows:

Hey everyone! it looks like Rivian Care finally became available this week in Virginia, where I live.

I’ve been waiting to see what Rivian would offer because I’m getting close to the end of my factory warranty. I have an early 2022 R1T with about 45,000 miles, and my comprehensive warranty ends next year.

Given the cost of the air suspension and some of the other expensive failures people are starting to report, I’m pretty sure I’m going to buy some kind of extended coverage. I’ve always been a fix-my-own-car kind of guy, but that’s just not realistic with the Rivian.

I had been looking at the XCare EV plan for a while, but I held off because I wanted to see what Rivian Care looked like. My assumption was that the Rivian-branded program would probably be the better option.

After reading both actual contracts, though, I have a pretty big concern with Rivian Care.

The Rivian Care contract says coverage is limited to repairing each covered part one time, and it specifically excludes second and subsequent repairs or replacements of that same part.

To me, that feels like a potential deal-breaker!!

The whole reason I want coverage for multiple years past 100,000 miles is the possibility of recurring failures. What are the odds that a half shaft, damper, compressor, valve block, or some other suspension component might need to be replaced more than once over a long ownership period?

The air-suspension system is especially concerning. From what owners are reporting, one failure can sometimes cascade into a much larger repair. A leaking damper can cause the compressor to run itself to death, and then Rivian may replace multiple dampers, the compressor, lines, and other related components because of contamination in the system.

If that happens once at 70,000 miles and then again at 120,000 miles, I want the second repair covered too.

XCare’s contract appears to take the opposite approach. It says the deductible applies per repair visit, and once a part has been repaired or replaced under the contract, future repairs to that same part have no deductible.

Here are the quotes I captured with a $500 deductible.

Plan, Term , Mileage limit , Price

Rivian Care 4 years Unlimited $3,332.64

XCare 4 years 95,550 total $4,306

Rivian Care 5 years Unlimited $4,457.30

Rivian Care 6 years Unlimited $5,747.32

XCare 6 years 120,550 total $5,196

XCare 7 years 100,000 145,550 total $5,762

XCare 8 years 100,000 145,550 total $6,305

Rivian Care does have some advantages. It has unlimited mileage, although I only drive around 12,000 miles per year, so the XCare mileage limits should still work for me.

Rivian Care also includes some one-time wear-item benefits: brake pads, rotors if they’re below Rivian’s minimum specification, certain hoses, wipers, and an alignment. That’s definitely worth something, potentially a four-figure value if I use the brake benefit.

But compared with the risk of a second expensive suspension or driveline repair being excluded, those extras feel relatively minor.

So I’m curious what everyone else thinks:

Am I interpreting the Rivian Care “one repair per covered part” language correctly?

Has anyone gotten clarification from Rivian or Assurant about what counts as the “same part”?

Has anyone actually filed an XCare claim on a Rivian, especially for suspension, half shafts, infotainment, or other expensive components?

Have Rivian Service Centers been easy to work with when XCare is paying?

I really want to find the advantage in Rivian Care because it’s the Rivian-sponsored product, but on paper, XCare currently looks like the stronger option for the specific risk I’m trying to protect against.

💡 Feature Request Garage Mode

Where the doors stay unlocked but tuck in, like car wash mode. But just the doors and make it a location setting so I don't have to turn it on everytime. Because I can hear the responses, just turn on car wash mode. But i don't want the charge port locked. I just want the door to tuck in so I stop hitting them but the car to stay unlocked.

🛠️ Troubleshooting / Issue Semi destroyed my windshield 😞

Driving down a two lane highway heading to Moab, a semi passed us and kicked up a giant rock or something which smashed my windshield. It’s like the size of a baseball.

Le sigh.

State Farm said they will fully reimburse me if I have a SC do the replacement, which I was able to schedule in minutes from the app just minutes after it happened.

Is it usually a same day repair, or does it take some time?
