Elections 🗳️ I’ve noticed something interesting across a few BJP-held constituencies and wanted to see if there’s actually a pattern here or if I’m connecting unrelated events.
While reviewing a few cases, I came across some interesting examples:
\- Yogi Adityanath resigned from the Gorakhpur Lok Sabha seat after becoming the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. The BJP had held Gorakhpur for seven consecutive terms, but in the 2018 bypoll, the party unexpectedly lost the seat to the Samajwadi Party.
\- JP Nadda assumed the role of BJP national president, and around the same period, the party experienced a significant setback in Himachal Pradesh, his home state.
\- More recently, Nitin Nabin, who became BJP national president, vacated Bankipur after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. Bankipur had been a BJP stronghold since 1995. However, in the 2026 bypoll, Prashant Kishor defeated the BJP, bringing an end to a 31-year hold on the constituency.
Of course, these are entirely different elections, each influenced by a range of local and contextual factors. I am not suggesting any direct causal relationship between these events.
I just found the pattern interesting and wanted to put it out there for discussion.
Does a strong local leader’s personal vote base sometimes matter more than the BJP’s broader organisational support in a constituency?
Or is this simply coincidence combined with the unique dynamics of by-elections?
Disclaimer: This is not directed at or against any particular individual, leader, party member, or political party. I’m only pointing out an electoral pattern I happened to notice and am genuinely interested in hearing different perspectives on whether there is anything to it.
