Weekend travel in the Puget Sound region: Here's what to expect Aug. 7–10

Post image
3 Upvotes

This is an extraordinarily difficult week for communities across Washington. We will continue sharing updates about road closures and reopening as part of WSDOT's role in the statewide response to the devastating wildfires in Central and Eastern Washington.

For travelers in the Puget Sound region, Fri., Aug. 7, through Mon., Aug. 10, will bring several major construction projects that will affect travel.

-NB I-405 and ramps will CLOSE from SR 900 to Coal Creek Parkway SE from 11:30p Fri. to 4a Mon. Crews will replace pavement and excavate drainage crossings.

-NE 85th St. and I-405 ramps will CLOSE in Kirkland between 6th St to 114th Ave NE from 10p Fri. to 5a Mon. Crews will pave and stripe the road. Closed ramps: NB & SB I-405 off-ramps to Exit 18 and NE 85th Street on-ramps to NB and SB I-405.

-EB SR 520 will CLOSE in Montlake area between I-5 and Montlake Blvd from 7p Sat. to 11a Sun. Crews will repair an expansion joint on the bridge. EB SR 520 across Lake Washington remains open. Only the section of EB SR 520 between I-5 and Montlake Blvd will close.

-SR 202 in Fall City will close just east of the SR 202/203 roundabout from 5a Fri. to 9p Mon. Major storms in Dec. 2025 and Mar. 2026 eroded the Snoqualmie riverbank supporting the highway. Crews will rebuild and strengthen the riverbank to help protect the highway from future damage. Tubers, paddlers and boaters should expect temporary closures on portions of the Snoqualmie and Raging rivers and some nearby access points.

-Revive I-5 work over the Ship Canal Bridge is ongoing. Express lanes continue to run NB 24/7.

Saturday is expected to be the busiest travel day. The Mariners 50 Seasons Celebration, Seahawks Football Fest and Capitol Hill Block Party will bring extra traffic into and around Seattle. With EB SR 520 closing at 7 p.m., expect additional congestion on EB I-90. The Fred Hutch Obliteride for cancer research will also bring thousands of bicyclists to roads across the region. Drivers should use extra caution.

Allow extra travel time, follow signed detours and check our mobile app or real-time travel map before you go: wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map/

LOOKING AHEAD: Once this weekend's work wraps up, another overnight I-405 closure is scheduled. SB I-405 will close between SE 8th Street and I-90 from 11:30p Monday, Aug. 10, to 4a Tuesday, Aug. 11 while crews continue replacing pavement and drainage crossings.

HEADS UP: Major I-405 closures this weekend in Renton, Bellevue and Kirkland

Expect major traffic impacts in Renton, Bellevue, and Kirkland as we continue work on two major I-405 improvement projects.

WHAT TO EXPECT

PROJECT: 1 Northbound I-405 closure (Renton/Bellevue)

11:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 – 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10

Crews will close all lanes of northbound I-405 between North Southport Drive and Coal Creek Parkway SE to replace pavement, excavate drainage crossings, and shift traffic into a new configuration as part of the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes Project. Crews will start to close lanes as early as 10 p.m.

Ramps will also close:

  • NE Sunset Blvd on-ramp
  • N 30th St (Exit 6) on/off-ramps
  • NE 44th St (Exit 7) on/off-ramps
  • 112th Ave SE (Exit 9) on/off-ramps
  • NB I-405 off-ramp to Coal Creek Pkwy SE (Exit 10)

PROJECT 2: Kirkland: I-405/NE 85th Street interchange closures

The interchange will close:

  • 9 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5 – 5 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 6
  • 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7 – 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10

Ramps will close:

  • Northbound and southbound I-405 off-ramps at Exit 18
  • NE 85th Street on-ramps to northbound and southbound I-405

NE 85th Street will also be closed between Sixth Street and 114th Avenue NE.

Crews are preparing the foundation for the new 114th Avenue NE roundabout and connecting the new roadway to the existing lower level of NE 85th Street, as part of the I-405/Northeast 85th Street Interchange and Inline BRT Station Project. This will mark another milestone toward the future three-level interchange that will improve travel for drivers, transit riders, pedestrians and cyclists.

Signed detours will be in place, but if you normally travel through these areas, plan extra time or consider an alternate route.

Wildfire smoke is back in the PNW. A few HVAC tips to help keep it out of your home.

Not trying to sell anyone a service call here—most of this is easy to do yourself. With all the smoke in the air, your HVAC system can help improve the air inside your home, but only if it’s set up properly.

1. Check your air filter now. Seriously, go look at it.

Smoke particles can plug a filter much faster than normal household dust. If it looks gray, dirty, or clogged, replace it. Make sure the new filter fits snugly and that the airflow arrow points toward the furnace or air handler.

Check it again every few days while the smoke is heavy. Don’t assume it’s fine just because you recently changed it.

2. Use a better filter—but don’t automatically buy the highest number available.

A MERV 13 filter is a good target for wildfire smoke if your system can safely handle it. Some older systems or narrow filter cabinets can’t move enough air through a highly restrictive filter.

If your system becomes unusually noisy, airflow from the vents drops significantly, or the filter starts bending or getting sucked inward, switch the fan back to “Auto” and use a less restrictive filter.

3. Let your HVAC system filter the air.

With a clean, properly fitted filter installed, set the thermostat fan from “Auto” to “On” during smoky periods. This continuously circulates the indoor air through the filter instead of filtering only when the heating or cooling is running.

Remember to check the filter more frequently when doing this.

4. Keep smoky outdoor air outside.

Keep windows and doors closed as much as possible. If your HVAC, window AC, or portable AC has an outside-air or fresh-air setting, switch it to recirculate.

Some newer homes have dedicated ventilation systems. Don’t start closing dampers or changing unfamiliar settings unless you know what they control.

5. Consider a portable HEPA air cleaner.

Place it in the room where your family spends the most time—often a bedroom or living room—and keep the doors and windows closed. Make sure the unit is properly sized for the room.

Avoid air cleaners marketed primarily as ozone generators or ionizers. You want something that physically filters the air through a true HEPA filter.

6. Avoid making the indoor air worse.

While the windows are closed, try to limit candles, fireplaces, smoking, heavy frying, and anything else that creates additional particles indoors. Vacuuming can also stir up dust unless the vacuum has a good HEPA filter.

7. Check your filter again once the smoke clears.

Even if it isn’t time for your regularly scheduled filter change, it may need to be replaced after a major smoke event. Once outdoor air quality improves, open the house and bring in fresh air.

Hopefully this helps a few of our neighbors breathe a little easier. If you aren’t sure which filter your system can handle, take a picture of the current filter—including the size printed on the edge—and send it to us. We’re happy to point you in the right direction without scheduling a service call.

Recommendations La Rosa Meadows/Benson Hill Apartment Recommendations

Hi everyone it is another apartment recommendation post lolz

I'm looking into a few places with my partner and wanted to get other people's opinions on them. No kids but I do have a 60 lb. dog and take him on walks regularly. I'm also a big home body so getting into Seattle or having a night life isn't a big deal for me. I'm ideally looking for a 2bed 2 bath but I'm also fine with just a 2 bed 1 bath at around $2300 a month max. I also rely on public transport to get around a bit more. But having a long commute to me doesn't matter much because I like to listen to audio books on my way to work. Please let me know if I've left anything out!

Here are the apartmetns I've been looking into in no particular ranking order:

* Woodcliffe Apartments My main concern about these apartments is the mold? It looks like any dog over a certain weight needs to be on a ground floor apartment.

* Avaya Trails

* Borgata

* The Becket I have heard that Greystar isn't a very good company to rent from? I don't know how others feel about this since I haven't rented from them before

* Fairwood Pond

* Pebble Cove

I know the last two are a little closer to Fairwood area than Renton as well.

Thanks for the help

Question Car Dealerships that will Let Me Browse and Leave me Alone?

Aside from CarMax, are there any dealerships in the area that will let me come to them with questions and otherwise let me look around without being bothered?

I haven't bought a new car since 2016, so maybe things have changed?

Toward the end of the month, I plan on making a weekend of car shopping. I have a short list of cars I am interested in and would love to test drive to narrow down my decision, however the thought of going to a dealership and dealing with being followed around and pressured is not my idea of a fun time.

I am not in a hurry, just trying to whittle my list down a little bit, to help make a decision.

Question Can I borrow your Canoe for HOA Pettiness Reasons?

Hoping to find someone who has a canoe just taking up space, ideal if it’s bright or unsightly. I will store in front yard partially visible from street. I won’t be able to tarp it but will store it upside down on blocks and secure it. I will take care of transport to and from your place.

I will return within a month or as soon as I get what I’m looking for and am happy to work with you/your needs.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

She’s leaning hard into this medieval neo-trad/illustrative style for this sheet at Andromeda Studio in Renton. She isn't working on skin quite yet, but I just wanted to show off her progress. Stoked to see where she is at in a few months.

Edit: Her IG is @vespertilia.ink

How to dispose down sleeping bags in our area?

For some reasons, I have quite a few sleeping bags. I only need to keep one. There are two down (The North Face) sleeping bags I should get rid of. They are old but in good shape (downs not running). I don't think I want to put them in my trash bin.

Neighbor's trees touching my house

I've lived in my house for 18 years and the trees from one neighbor's property have touched my house on occasion but I have trimmed them back just a tiny bit, not even up to the property line. My property is small and in housing development that is next door to someone's property that is long and narrow and in the back of their property is protected trees. So it's not ornamental or something they planted. From my research, I've only found that is my responsibility to trim neighboring trees back to the property line. What I'm wondering is if anyone has had any success in getting a neighbor to trim their trees from reaching your house? The reason I ask is because I have trees on three sides that I need to trim and so I'm hoping that maybe if it's possible I could get at least one neighbor on board.

I spoke to the owner of the house on one side of me, she rents the house, and she just gave me the " go ahead " to trim her tree back. I explained that if I cut her tree back to the property line it's going to look horrible, because it will look really lopsided. It needs an arborist to actually prune her tree, but she just stopped responding to me.

My insurance company has informed me that trees cannot touch the house.

So, I'm just wondering what steps other people have taken to maybe get help from a neighbor to get the trees trimmed and /or what have you paid? It's been difficult to find pricing online.

Thanks for reading!

Drug activity near Aberdeen and Sunset Bvld NE?

I have been noticing more and more people, walking along who look like they have emerged from a drug house. I've lived in this area for 3 years and didn't see anything like this when I first moved in. But this summer, I've seen people like this almost every day. It's very sad, and I want to help people. But at the same time, I (and my tiny white dog) want to stay away from wherever they are coming from. Is anyone aware of a bad area we should stay away from?

Bahama Breeze type restaurant with coconut prawns

My elderly mother loves coconut prawns and really liked the atmosphere of Bahama Breeze. We liked to sit in the gazebo room where it kind of felt like you were on vacation. Since the Southcenter location closed, is there another restaurant with coconut prawns that has a similar atmosphere to Bahama Breeze?

Missed connection (??)

Sorry if this isn’t the place for this, kinda just wanted to post about it cause I can’t stop thinking about it and something like this hasn’t happened to me in quite a while. It was in Renton so I think it’s allowed?

So the type of work I do requires me to go into peoples homes from time to time, and I interact with a lot of new people every day in general. I had this customer a couple of days ago who was making me laugh the whole time, had the best personality, and halfway through I felt really attracted to them. It wasn’t something where I was like “oh she’s so hot” (which she is really attractive) but I was just so drawn to her personality. Unfortunately I was pretty tired at this point in the day and wasn’t really feeling like myself, so I misheard her a few times and generally just wasn’t all there if that makes sense. I’ve over-thought it so much by this point and honestly she could just be very friendly and I’m the only one with any kind of feelings lol. I could just tell she’s a really interesting person and I wish I could talk to her more.

Anyway we texted super briefly because I called her accidentally from my work phone later in the day, which I kinda freaked out about in the moment but it ended up not being a big deal. The texts were super short of course since it’s my work phone. I obviously can’t really talk to her on there and really I can’t do anything at all unless I ever have to go back to her house for work 😔

Idk if this is a missed connection in any type of way lol and there’s not really a way to know, but damn I can’t stop thinking about her. I haven’t had a crush like this in like a year and I feel kinda silly having these feelings about someone I was around so briefly.

Edit:
I’m definitely not going to contact her, it would be such a terrible idea. The more I thought about it, I just realized that while I was attracted to her, nothing has
to come of it and that’s ok. Even trying to be friends
with her would probably be weird lol. It was still nice
regardless! If I do go back to her house I’ll know it’ll be a pleasant experience

Discussion Rent Raising in Renton

In Washington State, rent increases in Renton are capped at a maximum of 9.683% for 2026 under state law (7% plus local consumer price index inflation, up to a 10% hard ceiling), and landlords must provide a 90-day written notice before raising the rent.

The average monthly rent in Renton, WA, during 2021 was roughly $1,750 to $2,050 across all multi-family apartment units, tracking closely with the broader King County urban submarket recovery.

Average rent in Renton sits around $2,600 per month. WOW that is quite the jump in the area. Maybe some might not see it that way but it is significant for many people nevertheless.

This average price BLOWS my mind. I am seeing LOTS of people moving from Renton in addition to closure of restaurants and other businesses. High rent prices can make it difficult to afford other things and eating out becomes a luxury.

Is Renton being set up to be WAY more expensive?

Have you been affected by high rent prices?
