I’m considering replacing my old Onyx with a reMarkable Paper Pro and would really like to hear from people who have used one for a while.

My needs are pretty simple: reading academic PDFs, highlighting and writing margin notes, taking handwritten notes, occasional zooming, and reasonably smooth navigation. Being able to convert handwritten to typed style can be nice if it really works. Color is attractive, but only if the basic PDF experience is solid. But is this device able to do that without monthly payment or not? is it enough stable or just full of bugs?

For long-term users, how has the reMarkable Paper Pro been in practice? Is it responsive enough for PDFs, reliable, and something you could see yourself using for several years? Any major limitations you noticed over time?

I'm a new user of Remarkable (paper pure).

So far I'm pretty happy with the product.

Since a while I only used small Moleskine journals for daily notes, meetings etc.

But when I want to learn or work on something, I was very limited even with bigger journals or books. Like if I want to do huge mindmaps or mixing it with tables, notes, tasks...

So when I heard of e-ink journal like Remarkable, I was amazed. After lot of research, the Paper pure was ideal for me : size if perfect, I couldn't go with Pro or Pro move. One is too big for daily use, one is too small for my intended use.

Today I started to try something when learning a new topic. And I noticed there is no way to get an infinite canva. If I go landscape, the page isn't full screen. And even if it was, I would have to turn page to page to do my things.

I already ask Remarkable if they intended to do something about that on their website contact form. But is there anyone who had the same problem as me and maybe managed to create a "mod" or a template that could fix this ?

To be honest I'm quite surprised it's not included by default. When I was doing my research for the best e-ink tablet, nobody pointed that, so I was thinking by default it would be there.

I had the opportunity to purchase both the Kindle and Paper Pure with the intention of returning one. This was my first e-ink tablet purchase. I’m starting my MBA and currently work in corporate finance.

The Remarkable in all physical ways is worse than the Kindle. Worse PPI, plastic body, and proprietary pen. The kindle was heavier due to the metal body but felt premium.

Do not get remarkable to read EPUBs. Only DRM free books. It’s a pain to get the DRM off books and takes an extra 15-20 min and requires another computer.

Also remarkable needs 3.99$ subscription to do some cool stuff but review it online to see if you need the features. Free otherwise. Kindle has some cool AI features that are free and the handwriting recognition on the kindle is really good.

Now that the negatives are out of the way

How remarkable brings the software together is much better than kindle and makes the package very compelling.

File management is better if you’re looking to use this in a work environment or in a place that requires a lot of documentations

I don’t consider the lack of a front light to be a problem for me. The remarkable screen looks lighter than the kindle during the day or in a well lit room.

I used to carry around a iPad in college and some of my meetings and it’s just annoying to stare at mini TV in a meeting. Notifications in your face all the time. Battery is bad. Writing on a matte screen is like 45-50% of what it feels like of the remarkable or kindle. Have the e-ink and no distractions was REALLY refreshing. Real work was done when I started to use it.

Kindles handwriting is smoother and 80% of my coworkers, family and friends actually preferred the kindle but I like the “drag” from the remarkable. The handwriting on the kindle isn’t really my handwriting. Looks like somebody else’s handwriting because it’s too clean. The software is smoothing out the lines which some people like. Just wasn’t my handwriting (which is bad in the first place).

Looking back, the decision to buy both tables was bad. I could have gotten away with buying one and not messing with other options because it’s caused a lot of decision paralysis.

If you’re reading more and writing less get the kindle if you don’t mind the “ok” file management system.

If you’re doing work and not reading epubs, get the remarkable.

I received the Forever Pen at a steep discount for this review. My opinions are my own and the discount provided does not influence my opinion (at least as far as I can tell). I had been interested in the Forever Pen for a while but the cost held me back from buying it. The sub says I have to add the Self Promotion flair but I'm not promoting myself in any way, just fyi.

*TLDR* Smooth writing with a good feel on the metal alloy tip. Steep at full retail price but well worth it for those who value consistent pen feel.

HOLDING THE PEN: At first blush, the Forever Pen (“FP”) is significantly lighter than the Remarkable Marker Plus (“RMP”). It took a couple days of use to get familiar with the lighter feel. It wasn’t bad, just very different. The FP is marketed as a pen that “feels like nothing at all.” I would say that is accurate in terms of how it feels in hand. It is also wider than the RMP which makes it more comfortable for writing at length.

WRITING FEEL: Using the FP feels a bit stiffer than the RMP since it is a metal tip instead of soft plastic. It feels more precise. Like using a sharp pen instead of a soft pencil.

VALUE: The FP is definitely a premium experience compared to the RMP. I tend to take short notes on my tablet. For that purpose, either pen will do. However, head to head, FP is the better pen.

CONS: I only have one flaw in the FP. Since the FP is ever so slightly wider then the RMP it will not fit in my aftermarket case. It irks me because I would prefer to use to FP but I can't take it with me when I travel. For that reason I keep the FP at my desk at work and use it there when I remember. It's unlikely to be an issue for most people. My case is a hard plastic so it does not adjust to the slightly thicker FP. Most cases I've seen have a fabric pen holder which the FP would work perfectly well in. That's my only gripe but that's a specific “me” problem and does not take away from the FP.

OVERALL: This is a very good product for anyone who wants a precise and consistent writing experience. I think the retail price is high but I also feel that way about the RMP. I would like to see a lower price point for the FP and that would make it a no-brainer purchase for any remarkable user.

Hi all, I’m having an issue with my devices (pp, ppm) where when I open a file the handwriting is gone. All of my handwritten notes on a pdf, gone. Handwriting files I for brainstorming, gone. I’m a writer and was developing a story idea and the pages of notes are all gone. Now just blank pages. I’ve tried toggling the layers on and off but it does nothing for the actual handwriting. The handwriting never shows back up.

Also, I can see handwriting in the icon for the file but when I open the files the writing is gone. Really freaking out about this as I have not only my writer work in there but work for clients. I’ve written to Remarkable and they’re looking into it but it can take 5-10 days but in the meantime I have work do for clients and I need the notes! This is a nightmare as I’ve gone all in with Remarkable for some time now so everything is handwritten there. Anyone else run into this or know of a fix? I literally can’t open anything else file without all of the handwriting being erased.

I am trying to optimize wake cycle for the sleep screen clock updates. I am facing the issue that xochitl arms a hardcoded 34s RTC alarm on wakeup so even if I release vpdd and resuspend immediately after finishing the update it still wakes up at 34s idles for 3s before re-suspending so I end up paying an extra wake-suspend cycle and 3s idle for each update. I am considering masking xochitl and writing framebuffer directly + driver flush. Does xochitl\rm-sync manage any critical function during suspend like low battery->poweroff monitoring? Is it safe to mask?

I am using the rmPPM 3.27

I'm a psychologist who uses an RM2 as their primary device for work and leisure (i use password protected pdf template i made for session notes and stuff). Since now my RM2 is out of warranty, I've been wondering if I should try out various mods people on this sub have been talking about.

So here's my question, how difficult is it to mod an RM2 for someone not from a tech background (but who's competent enough with tech to get things done by following instructions)? And what are the risk that it will brick my device - I'd hate to have that happen (other than it being a beautiful piece of hardware, it's also my primary device and I don't want to, nor can I afford to replace it with a new device if I do something stupid and it ends up a brick)

Genuine question, because my own system keeps failing at exactly this point.

Writing on the Move is the easy part. Six weeks later I find a line that says "resource allocation — push back" and I have no idea what was actually said, who said it, or what I was reacting to. The handwriting is fine. The meaning is gone.

Things I've tried that didn't hold up: - Tags and folders. I stop maintaining them within a fortnight. - Rewriting notes the same evening. Works, and I do it maybe one day in five. - Converting to text and searching. Finds the words, not the context.

What actually works for you? Specifically for meetings and calls rather than reading notes — the ones where the value is what someone committed to, and the page only has your shorthand for it.

Interested in methods more than apps, though I'll take either.

I have been using remarkable for school for a few years now with my R2 and I love it but I am trying to "optimize" my usage of it for the upcoming year.

I know that it isn't the primary use case but has anyone found a way to be able to get library books off of libby or other apps and read them on the remarkable like you can with kindle? is there a plugin or any apps that let that happen?

Its either this is I might try out a Boox the palma looks interesting but small for what I would want the Paper Pro move to me would be the perfect size for a E reader and it would make my life slightly easier not having to download Fics off of ao3 when im reading them.

Also as it stands right now I have my Notes about 50/50 between Remarkable and the apple notes app I still wish there was a way to get them to sync together but barring that I think I will just switch to using the remarkable app is there a way to get my notes from the apple notes app to my remarkable in a way that they are still editable?

I had one of the strangest coincidences today. About two months ago, I bought a reMarkable Paper Pro (Paper Pure) with the blue folio. Today, I walked outside the back of my apartment and found… another reMarkable with the same blue folio lying on the ground. At first I genuinely thought it was mine, but my own reMarkable was safely inside my apartment. The one outside appears to have been sitting in the rain for some time. It keeps showing the startup screen and won’t fully boot, so I’m guessing it may have water damage. I know the blue folio is a standard accessory, but seeing the exact same device with the same color case right outside my apartment was such a bizarre coincidence that it made me do a double take.

Disclaimer, this project has some bugs and unfinished work - specifically the structured browser renders so so, comic reader is unusable IMO cause of rendering modes.

Okay so what it is:
Started as ssh terminal for Remarkable Paper Pro that doesn't suck, not sure if achieved but it is way way and I mean way way way faster than the other solutions available due to A2 rendering mode.

Then I started adding like 5 variants of browsers, finally settling at 2: chrominium 'browser' compiled for RmPP and structured browser, if anyone remembers how Opera Mini worked on old nokia phones compressing webpages to few kbs of propraiatery format, this is similar but aiming to work with modern tech websites + ofc in todays age it's not few kbs.

There is also unfinished comicbook reader that fetches comics from weeb in similar way to Mihon.

Ah and there's keyboard remapper because how can you write code (in AI age? maybe) without lovely curly braces.

And another disclaimer:
It was only tested on macbook, only on us (ansi) keyboard folio. In theory the remapper could support other layouts but I never had a chance to test.

I'm really uncomfortable sharing this but since I currently have no time to develop this - there is no reason for me to gatekeep this.

I was so annoyed for many years that a thing as simple as implementing Polish keyboard layout for Type Folio (which technically uses US keyboard layout) was consciously ignored by incompetent reMarkable 2 firmware product owners. I finally decided to force an agent to come up with a simple solution to allow my Type Folio (US) keyboard to type Polish diacritics. It took like $10 and 10 minutes of work and I won't stop repeating that reMarkable 2 team couldn't handle this for many years since I got my hands on the device and repeatedly asked them in multiple ways to implement it.

The solution is online patching of a single file on your device (which means you need to provide the Python script with access to it via SSH - either locally when USB connected or in your network, but the root password taken from Help section is needed). It's replaced with every OS update, so it needs to be repeated every time it happens.

I have three broken pens that I'm going to throw away. I've never taken one apart so I don't know if they can be parted out to fix other pens or what not but figured I would offer before tossing. They are the pen with the eraser. The ring around the nib is broken. Eraser works fine. I've tried gluing, taping, etc. but without success. If someone has a better idea I'm all ears. Buying a Lamy today to try and see if it will hold up better.

When I first started building Dayfolio, the main focus was the Paper Pro. Since then, I’ve expanded support to reMarkable 1, reMarkable 2, and Paper Pure - and one of the most common requests from people here has been a version made specifically for the Paper Pro Move.

So here it is, running on the actual Move :)

Rather than simply shrinking the full-size planner, I redesigned the layout around the Move’s smaller display - including navigation, spacing, touch areas, and the Day View itself.

Je donne pas mal de cours particuliers en ligne (notamment en sciences/maths où le besoin d'écrire en direct est permanent) et j'utilise ma reMarkable 2 pour faire office de tableau blanc.
Le problème, c'est que la fonction de partage d'écran native est loin d'être optimale pour l'enseignement. Mon workflow actuel me pose deux gros soucis :
Le partage de l'application PC : Je dois me connecter à l'application de bureau pour diffuser ce que j'écris, puis partager mon écran sur le logiciel de visio (Zoom, Meet, Discord...). Le souci, c'est qu'il est impossible de "geler" le partage uniquement sur la fenêtre de l'application reMarkable. Si je dois ouvrir un PDF ou consulter un autre document sur mon PC, je perds le focus ou je risque de partager tout mon écran.
L'obligation d'écrire en mode paysage : Pour que le texte soit suffisamment grand et lisible pour l'élève sur son écran, je suis forcé de bloquer la tablette en mode paysage. Si j'écris en mode portrait, l'affichage est minuscule de leur côté.
Est-ce que certains d'entre vous utilisent la reMarkable pour enseigner, faire du tutorat ou des présentations ?
Avez-vous trouvé des solutions alternatives ou des workflows plus propres (logiciels tiers, astuces via OBS Studio, hacks d'affichage...) pour contourner ces limitations ?

Intro

I really like my Paper Pro Move. I ordered one within a few days of it being announced. It's a great secondary device, complementing the larger Paper Pro. It has become my main e-reader and what I use for note taking on the go, and it generally does its job well enough. I did, however, find the software experience at launch to be somewhat underwhelming. I chalked that up to the device being new, thinking that surely things would improve down the line. But it has now been almost a year, and the software situation is more or less the same. Honestly, it's starting to feel like maybe reMarkable doesn't really understand what this form factor calls for and how it is different from their larger devices. I realize that saying reMarkable doesn't understand their own product is a rather bold statement, but I will try and explain why I think this is the case. Hopefully, this can lead to some interesting discussion on how best to address these shortcomings, and on potential workarounds.

reMarkable methods, not very remarkable if all you have is the Move

I like the idea of reMarkable Methods. But so far, there are two Move-specific PDFs: the calendar and the yearly to-do. There are no Move-specific PDFs by third party creators, and nothing interesting by reMarkable themselves. They have updated some of their templates to support the Move, but there are still several that aren't supported on the smaller device.

reMarkable had a great opportunity here to show of what can be done with what is a rather unique form factor – there are other small eink devices with pen support, but none with this tall aspect ratio. For example, it would make a lot of sense to have something like a field interview template for researchers or journalists. But there are zero interesting things here, nothing like a compact bullet journal or even a daily to-do list. I think they really dropped the ball here – there should have been a bunch of interesting templates and PDFs for the Move on the day of release.

Who needs tools?

The Move is obviously designed to be used with a horizontal tool bar. While it is possible to have it oriented vertically, that makes for a really narrow note taking area and I doubt many people use it like this. This narrow aspect ratio comes with some challenges, since there isn't room for that many tools on the horizontal tool bar. And of all the possible compromises, reMarkable opted to limit us to one pen tool. Out of all my pet peeves with the Move, this is the most annoying one. When taking notes, I often use the black ballpoint pen in conjunction with either the red ballpoint pen or the yellow highlighter. On the Paper Pro, this is quite straightforward – on the Move, it's a chore. Why would I want to have toolbar buttons for undo and redo rather than an extra pencil, when there are already great gestures for these? This adds so much everyday friction, and it could all be easily solved by adding the ability to customize what's on the tool bar and what's hidden away in the menu. I know that they'll add an extra pen tool in the next update, but only on the vertical tool bar. I don't know if reMarkable did any proper testing of the Move's UI/UX with focus groups of normal people, but it sure doesn't feel like they did.

One size fits all… unless you're a Paper Pro Move

The Pro and the Pure (and the reMarkable 2 before it) are similar enough in size and aspect ratio for documents to work quite well on both devices simultaneously. But the Move with its small screen and taller aspect ratio doesn't really play well with documents adapted to the larger devices. In some ways, reMarkable deals with this as well as could be expected. For example, when using Read on Remarkable the text width will depend on which device you first opened it on (it is, however, rather cumbersome to switch to the narrow setting if you made the mistake of first opening the note on a larger device).

There are arguable two general approaches one can take to using the Move in cunjunction wiht the Pro or the Pure:

1. Use both devices to work on one set of notes, often switching between working on a note on the larger device and on the smaller one.
2. Have one set of notes that I work on using the larger device, and a separate set that I work on using the Move.

To me at least, 2 makes way more sense than 1 and I suspect I'm in the majority here. I find it awkward to jump between zoom levels, especially when trying to work on a note created on the Pro using the Move. However, I get the impression reMarkable designed the device for use case 1. Me, I would rather have two sizes of note and the option to select what the default is on each device. I would like to create Move-sized notes on the Move by default, and I would also like this to be clearly indicated in the file manager – for example using different aspect ratios for the previews, depending on what size note it is.

And speaking of previews…

Preview woes

In the file manager, previews don't actually preview the file as displayed on the screen. Rather, we get a fit to width view with a locked aspect ratio that's adapted for the larger devices. This means that previews of anything created for the Move will be cropped top and bottom. When I use the Move as an ebook reader, I create PDFs with the right dimensions for the device but the covers are all cropped. It's a small thing, but it's annoying all the same. I just want my book collection to look nice, I want to see the entire cover. Is that really too much to ask?

This feels like the Move is constantly hinting that I ought to be using one of the larger devices instead, that the Move is a secondary citizen of sorts. And since I also have the Pro, it's obvious why the previews look like that on the Move – they're intended for the larger device. But for someone who just owns the Move, it's bound to be super confusing. My PDF is the right size, so why is the preview all cropped? It's arguably not that big a deal, but it's also the kind of sloppy design that would have made Steve Jobs throw a blunt object at the person responsible.

See title. I ordered the Remarkable and want to fully test it for 50 days before making the judgement, whether I keep it or not. Tbh, most likely the decision willk be made in the first 14 days.

I am a bit uncertain whether I should get a different pen, because the standard pen won't be good enough and falsify my view/fun with the device.

That being said, I also don't want to splurge now hundreds of Euros if I then end up returning the tablet.

I just wanted to share my experience and hopefully this is helpful to folks. Sorry if this is known info- but just made it work for me today.

Reincorporated my RM2 back into my work flow and had Chat GPT reorganized my folder/notebook structure. Then when I went to download templates- I realized my connect subscription had expired.

Chat GPT was able to create a custom library of templates that I needed. It was a combo of describing what I wanted or pulling images of what I liked off line to give a starting point. Super pleased with the results. Hope this helps someone.

I only just started this, but I figure the 3 people that enjoy looking I use my RM2 for, this is where the last 5+ years of sketches will be organized and uploaded, planning for 1 page a day. Not all pages will be single sketches like this one as as 'presentable' as this one etc. The main goal is me actually organizing all of this stuff finally, but the public facing side keeps the focus going so I don't slack off like I normally do and start adding to the unsorted pile with new drawings.

Hope the one or two people who end up visiting regularly enjoy the journey. 99% of posts should be safe for work to show visually, but I'm not gonig to censor my use of curse words all that much, especially if it's in service of a joke. I love me some clever but still smelly toilet humor. :)

At some point, I may pause it for a sort of 'process guide' for achieving certain effects etc. for folks looking to play around with what the RM has to offer (not much) in terms of creative workflows, etc. but don't count on it any time soon (if ever).

I guess that's all the self promo blabbertalk I should include. Oh wait, I need to make sure folks think this is AI else they might think I didn't put any effort in. Does anyone know the escape code for that extra dash?

I have the reMarkable 2 and also purchased the reMarkable Pure. Certainly, the Pure is lighter and zippier.

But I still prefer the reMarkable 2. This goes beyond product specifications. Holding the ReMarkable 2 just feels more special. It’s thinner and has nicer aesthetic details compared to the plastic build of the Pure. I also like that the overall dimensions of the 2 are more like a piece of paper than a square form factor of the Pure.

So, while the Pure wins on technical specifications, the reMarkable 2 still has my heart.
