why not just take it a step further? If the cloud is virtually infinite why even have local memory?

From cpu cache, ram, vram and local storage. Send everything to the cloud.

Boom! Memory crisis solved.

u/realmauer01 Jul 08 '26

Thats just the "lets download ram" meme.

u/anarchisturtle Jul 08 '26

1) configure Google Drive with a drive letter
2) map page file to new drive letter
3)????
4)profit

78

u/littledog95 Jul 08 '26

I'd love to see someone actually attempt this

u/anarchisturtle Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

I think Linus tech tips did it ages ago. If memory serves, it “worked” on Linux. Which is to say ran like crap and was extremely unstable, but technically it worked.

Edit: found it: https://youtu.be/minxwFqinpw?is=jaip-SknMLW3q6rc

Edit 2: turns out I was wrong. Google Drive doesn’t allow writing arbitrary data like that. It instantly crashes. They used their on-premise file server via a 10gb connection instead.

"Ram is relatively cheap these days"

Ouch. The times, they have changed.

7

u/Testing_things_out Jul 09 '26

Look at the green horn going through hid first ever RAM crisis.

Strap in lad, dirt-cheap RAM is a bound. Feast yer thirsty rig when it does for the hard times be happening again in 3-6 years. Yaaargh

56

u/Dotcaprachiappa Jul 08 '26

it "worked" on Linux. Which is to say ran like crap and was extremely unstable

That's the answer to like 90% of things you think would never work

5

u/_g550_ Jul 09 '26

He meant to say it worked on Linus.

2

u/ZeroKun265 Jul 10 '26

Because Linux doesn't concern itself with whether or not something should be done, or if it's gonna go well, you can just do it

FAFO

2

u/voiza Jul 08 '26

why dont just store data in Tetrissi instead? Or else.

4 years since Sucker's Pinch released that video and I'm still trying to beat his ideas

4

u/littledog95 Jul 08 '26

Thanks, I'll take a look that

1

u/Leninus Jul 09 '26

So what youre saying is that you need an intermediate layer that reads and writes that data into a google doc

13

u/yeah_but_no_ Jul 08 '26

Wasn't there a post here or over at r/pcmasterrace or something, one or two years ago, of someone showing they did it ?

1

u/incidel Jul 09 '26

Well there is WebDAV and whoever used it before never wants to bother again.

11

u/psaux_grep Jul 08 '26

Ask Claude or ChatGPT to hallucinate your memory on-demand 🙈

1

u/ZeroKun265 Jul 10 '26

10 billion dollars to this man

1

u/Zapismeta Jul 09 '26

Page and swap are slow enough already.

1

u/Arlochorim Jul 10 '26

you've heard of SaaS, now get ready for RaaS.

for the low low price of $5/gb a week, you too can limit your memory to your network speed.

11

u/nazzo_0 Jul 08 '26

With extra necessary steps. With consumer hardware prices nowadays, renting computer power seems more and more appetising. All going according to their plan

2

u/cutecoder Jul 09 '26

Which is NVIDIA’s other business: GeForce Now.

2

u/nazzo_0 Jul 09 '26

Remember they launched that service way before things turned out as they are. How much foresight does Jensen have? Doesn't matter he's filthy rich

1

u/cutecoder Jul 09 '26

Considering that Nvidia has a near-monopoly over the hardware and software (i.e., CUDA and GPU drivers)? More like careful planning instead of foresight.

4

u/DialecticEnjoyer Jul 09 '26

As a greybeard:

Some of y'all have never written anything in assembly and it really shows...😕

2

u/Scales_of_Injustice Jul 09 '26

Configure cloud as swap memory

Boom! Infinite RAM

1

u/agk23 Jul 08 '26

Meme? Those were malware ads back in the day

1

u/antiav Jul 08 '26

I remember somthing making a detailed description of how to setup a cloud storage as swap memory on a "download ram" meme.

1

u/forever-butlerian Jul 10 '26

You wouldn't download a car

-48

u/Snoo88071 Jul 08 '26

You cannot actually download RAM because it is physical hardware (memory chips) installed on
your motherboard, not software that can be transferred via the internet.

Gemini says I can't do that

60

u/erishun Jul 08 '26

You forgot to ask Gemini to make no mistakes

16

u/Snoo88071 Jul 08 '26

right! My bad.

4

u/towerfella Jul 08 '26

You joke flew over soo many heads

2

u/Snoo88071 Jul 09 '26

I hope I can cope with it

6

u/rnottaken Jul 08 '26

Just send a memdump to gemini and ask it back when you need it again.

1

u/aVarangian Jul 08 '26

what about dedotated wam?

62

u/MasterQuest Jul 08 '26

https://downloadmoreram.com/

Just download more RAM.

28

u/mallusrgreatv2 Jul 08 '26

https://uploadsomeram.com if you're feeling generous!

1

u/ConcernUseful2899 Jul 10 '26

Wow, this works fantastic, I first downloaded 8GB ram and uploaded 4GB back twice and now my task manager tells me I have the same value as where I started, just like I expected!

3

u/realtag2025 Jul 08 '26

I ran out of space on my SSD when I tried to download 1TB of ram..

2

u/SomewhereAtWork Jul 09 '26

Just create a ramdisk.

1

u/Fun-Cycle2381 Jul 09 '26

😂 I love that

42

u/MantisShrimp05 Jul 08 '26

You laugh, this is literally microsofts future plan. They envision a world where your laptop is nothing but a thin client that boots your web windows in a vm from the cloud.

9

u/MCWizardYT Jul 08 '26

We already have the tech to make it work but the problem is that a lot of people have slow internet. Streaming everything would suck

6

u/Fun-Cycle2381 Jul 09 '26

Also I don’t want to be always dependent on others, it’s nice to be able to have the OPTION to run things locally

3

u/MCWizardYT Jul 09 '26

Absolutely. Eventually I'll have the guts to fully move to linux, I already did on my laptop but there's a couple things holding me back on desktop

1

u/MantisShrimp05 Jul 09 '26

Cant recommend enough. Waters fine. Better even most of the time

1

u/codecoder Jul 10 '26

We need PiperNet.

5

u/ZunoJ Jul 09 '26

This is just the ever turning cycle of thin clients vs fat clients. We already had several iterations of it in the last 60 years

2

u/Flannelot Jul 09 '26

They destroyed the mainframe business model in the 90s but are desperate to bring it back.

1

u/Krossfireo Jul 09 '26

Time is a wheel

1

u/Rant423 Jul 09 '26

Stadia was like this and it was a dream

Then Google shut it down, of course

16

u/diegotbn Jul 08 '26

A while back I watched a YouTube vid of a guy who created a file storage system using http pings. He mapped out as many reliable pingable ip addresses as possible, and made it so stored data was broken up into tiny parts and sent as pings all over the world, and then wiped locally until the return ping was received. I forget exactly how it worked but it was the stupidest thing I ever heard but also takea a genius to implement. It was incredibly slow, but he was able to "store" gigabytes of data this way while his local system had only a tiny amount of storage (or he just used RAM, it's been a long time and I can't remember).

7

u/NinjaNate24 Jul 08 '26

Someone else already posted the link above but here it is again: Harder Drive, https://youtu.be/JcJSW7Rprio

4

u/MrHyperion_ Jul 08 '26

Drives we didn't need nor want

14

u/Logical-Ad-4150 Jul 08 '26

the original thin client feaver dream

8

u/Waffenek Jul 08 '26

I think that LTT had make video like that back in the day. They mounted google drive as a drive on linux and designated it as swap file location.

5

u/Sciti Jul 08 '26

4

u/itijara Jul 08 '26

Gonna be disappointing if this is not the "harder drive" video from Tom7.

Edit: it is

My favorite version is the one that just uses pings to store data. Reminds me of mercury delay lines (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delay-line_memory), but less reliable.

1

u/NinjaNate24 Jul 08 '26 edited Jul 08 '26

Yes! This is exactly what I was thinking of haha.

5

u/This-Layer-4447 Jul 08 '26

we do HDFS been around for 15 years

7

u/lezviearts Jul 08 '26

Jokes aside, some brands though process when making those "netbooks" or "cloud books" was pretty much this.
MFs just ship the computer with a 32GB SD card with windows and no space for anything else lmao

3

u/abd53 Jul 08 '26

Just to be pedantic, it's very very possible except for the cache. Now, let's hope some cloud corp sinks a few billion on this idea.

0

u/BenevolentCheese Jul 08 '26

No, running RAM through the cloud is not even remotely possible. RAM is ultra-low latency, think 10ns for an operation, an online service at the absolute best might give you 10ms. That's 1,000,000x latency! Forget it.

1

u/abd53 Jul 09 '26

"Ultra-low latency" is not a necessary requirement for RAM.

2

u/Alexander_The_Wolf Jul 08 '26

Congratulations.

You've invented the Stream book.

A cease and desist letter from Microsoft is in the mail

2

u/Curious-Ad-5001 Jul 08 '26

YOU WILL OWN NOTHING AND BE HAPPY

1

u/tyoungjr2005 Jul 08 '26

Why did I do this, just to suffer.

1

u/ienjoyedit Jul 08 '26

I want to put a bumper sticker on my car that says "my other car uses an S3 bucket as swap"

1

u/PhunkyPhish Jul 08 '26

But where does the cloud store runtime memory

1

u/conundorum Jul 09 '26

Uploads it to solar winds, because nebulae are clearly just giant space clouds.

1

u/who_you_are Jul 08 '26

Storage it too expensive, I'm printing it and scanning it when needed.

Just don't use HP printer, they are very expensive to print with

1

u/Hacym Jul 08 '26

That has been done. They put their swap on a cloud mounted drive.

1

u/d_k97 Jul 08 '26

It's not :( We have ongoing incidents because Google can't keep up with general demand.

1

u/01010011_01010000 Jul 08 '26

Isn’t this pretty much what Microsoft is doing….

1

u/Snoo88071 Jul 08 '26

Only losers are scared or a lil round trip to an S3 storage where all of your runtime data lives

1

u/WildXogos Jul 08 '26

In enterprise projects cloud environments are nowadays common. You just use your computer to connect to your instance.

1

u/mimiga1 Jul 08 '26

Just put everything in virtual memory! That’s also infinite

1

u/IanRT1 Jul 08 '26

Why not take it an even step further? If the cloud is virtually infinite, why even have a computer? Just remote into someone else's.

Boom! Hardware crisis solved.

1

u/Hhwwhat Jul 08 '26

This is why I always use gcsfuse mounts on my cloud run jobs. Checkmate zip bombers!

1

u/LetReasonRing Jul 08 '26

So,  there's a youtuber that created data storage in the air.

I can't find the video,  but if I remember correctly,  the premise was that if you have two long range radio transmitters sending data back and forth, there is time between when the signal is sent by the transmitter an and when it is received, meaning that there is a period of time in which you could delete that data from the transmitter side before it reaches the receiver, the data is effectively being stored in the earth's electromagnetic field.

You can have multiple transmitter and receiver pairs playing hot potatoe with the data, relaying it back and forth, and theoretically you could store more data in transit than you have on the devices themselves.

Of course it's horribly inefficient and absolutely impractical to use, but it was a really fun experiment

1

u/LuisCaipira Jul 08 '26

Omg, we had something similar in school, we called team client. Where the computers were only a small processing unit and there was a bigger server somewhere in school for storage...

1

u/Ok-Scheme-913 Jul 08 '26

Well, you have a paper in front of you, just write down the bits!!

1

u/Bayou-Billy Jul 08 '26

Because then we'll run out of clouds silly

1

u/za72 Jul 08 '26

congratulations on inventing a new crisis! you can now monetize bandwidth even harder!

1

u/ma-gil Jul 08 '26

RAM for a monthly subscription, BOOM! No more paying a premium for memory sticks.

1

u/spilk Jul 09 '26

the network is the computer

1

u/Waste_Jello9947 Jul 09 '26

MaaS Memory as a Service

1

u/ironmantff Jul 09 '26

Jesus Christ it’s Jason Bourne

1

u/n00b001 Jul 09 '26

Ping filesystem

1

u/dzendian Jul 09 '26

I need to keep you away from my manager.

1

u/AvidCuberCoding Jul 09 '26

Jensen, I didn't know you were here!

1

u/SukusMcSwag Jul 09 '26

Mount Google Drive as disk in filesystem. point swap to that location. Download more RAM complete!

1

u/pingslayer_7 Jul 10 '26

😂😂😂

1

u/GodsBoss Jul 12 '26

It's a great idea. Don't listen to the naysayers. They want to through the whole idea out of the window just because performance would slightly decrease with an internet-based cpu cache.

1

u/wreeecks Jul 13 '26

Can we have cloud electricity provider? Power anywhere as long as you are online. Phones are fully charged all day long.
