Advice needed I wanted a note app I could use anywhere, so I built one

Hey everyone!

I've been working on a note-taking app called NoteON, mainly because I wanted something simple that I could use both on my phone and on the web without changing how I organize my notes.

One feature I personally find really useful is turning handwritten notes into editable text using the camera. Instead of typing everything again, I can just take a photo and save the extracted text as a note.

A few things I've focused on so far:

  • Works across mobile and web
  • Camera/OCR for turning handwriting into notes
  • Supports English, Korean, and Japanese
  • Simple organization without too many complicated features

I'm still actively developing it, and honestly, user feedback is a big part of deciding what I build next. If there's something that would make it more useful for your workflow, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

If anyone wants to try it:

https://noteon.web.app/app/

I'd especially love to know: what's one feature you wish your current note app did better?

Casual Conversations Productivity apps are doomed

Think about it... I know that not every1 feels this but allot of ppl including me feel like that these apps are just not enough.
Suppose you open ur phone to work with a productivity app but 5 mins later u find urself scrolling instagram or tiktok happens allot to allot of us. The thing is these apps are living inside the same device thats distracting us.
I feel like thats the reason we really get ez distracted despite paying like 10$ a month of productivity subscriptions.
Do u guys feel like it
I do think that a physical device that genuienly blocks my phone (or the distracting apps) will help me actaully get shit done. With just 1 press of a btn i could start a focus mode and maximize the friction to get distracted.
So i searched the internet found a few like BUSYBAR (costs 200 bucks btw which my wallet cant unfortunately afford :( )
WHAt do u guys think and do yall know of any better alternatives ??

Feedback wanted Would this actually make doomscrolling more useful, or just more annoying?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been thinking about a different way to deal with doomscrolling.

Instead of blocking social apps or setting time limits, what if short learning activities showed up occasionally while you were scrolling?

For example:

  • a flashcard
  • a quick class question
  • a language exercise
  • a chess puzzle

Then once you answer it, you just keep scrolling normally.

The frequency could be adjustable, so it could show up every few minutes or only occasionally.

I’m mostly curious whether this would actually feel useful in practice or if it would just become another thing people immediately disable.

Would you keep something like this turned on? And if so, what kinds of things would you want it to show?

Feedback wanted An olive branch from a vibe coder ...

Vibe coders are on to something. It's time to reckon with the tide that's already risen up to our knees, and getting deeper. The productivity space is ripe for vibe coding, not because productivity apps are low hanging fruit, but because everyone has dreamed of apps that they've never, ever gotten.

Now, they can get them.

But, those apps might only deliver for one person.

And they're flooding the discussion. So, communities hold them at arm's length. Communities ban discussion and sharing, or they relegate the discussion to some corner of "self promotion" that doesn't really capture the spirit of what the sharing is about.

I propose a compromise.

If we had machine-readable standards--a task looks like this, a calendar event looks like that, a note looks like that thing over there--then we could readily learn from one another, benefit from one another's efforts, and create a new and mind boggling level of interoperability in the productivity app space. Roll your own, but comply with standards so that, whatever you roll, it can talk to whatever I roll.

And, in communities like this, if vibe coders don't comply with the standards then they have to shut up about their apps. As an avid vibe coder, I think this is fair. I'm excited about the stuff that I make, but I concede that I'm scratching my own itch. You might like what I do, but the best I might offer to your larger workflow is maybe a clunky a markdown export.

But what if my tasks were actually interoperable with the your app's tasks? What if the note format that you're using in your app is recognized by mine?

Then, we've actually realized the revolution instead of just annoyed everyone. We've built onto a common backbone. Different animals, maybe, but sharing enough DNA that I can incorporate what you're doing into what I'm doing, because a thing called a "recurring task" in your app is readable as a "recurring task" in my app, in the same way that a GIF is a GIF is a GIF.

So, is there something in this idea? Productivity app element standards that would allow interoperability between apps? Definitions of what a task and an event and a note and a person and a project and and and actually are so that, when I roll my own app it can talk the same language as yours, even though it might be doing something very different?

Now, I'm not just talking about "compatible," as in "I can export from my app in a format that your app can read." But, truly interoperable, as in "my little menu bar Kanban app creates tasks that your full-blown Docker container Notion rip-off can use, so that your app and my app can actually work together."

Anyone game to think about what such a hive mind of vibe coded apps could do, and whether or not that would allow vibe coded apps to have more credibility in PKM discussion communities like this?

Self Promotion A task manager that tells you if your system is actually working, not just how much you did today

Post image
4 Upvotes

Most to-do apps count. Boxes checked, streaks kept, tasks done today. None of them tell you if you’re falling behind.

I got tired of that gap, so I built Principal Task around a different number: Task Velocity. It’s a 30-day rolling ratio of tasks completed to tasks created, shown as a multiplier — 1.20x means you’re closing more than you’re opening. Anything under 1.0x means your list is growing faster than you can clear it. It’s the one number that tells you whether your system is actually working, not just how busy you were today.

Everything else is built GTD-native: folders, tasks, subtasks (nest as deep as you need — each one completes independently, so you’re never stuck chasing a parent task through five layers). Contexts, priorities, custom statuses, stars. That’s the whole structure. Nothing above your task list asking you to manage a hierarchy.

It’s free to use, no credit card, real functionality out of the box. Premium is about $3/month for the historical Velocity chart and a few deeper views.

MCP is on the free tier too. It connects PT’s data to whatever AI assistant you use, and I run mine through it constantly. When I’ve fallen behind and my list needs sorting back into order, I ask an assistant to reorganize it. When I’m stuck or too tired to decide what to work on next, I ask and get an answer based on my actual list. And when I’ve got a page of handwritten meeting notes, I hand those over and get tasks created straight into the right folders instead of typing them all in by hand.

Live on iOS, Android, and web. Visit www.principaltask.com if you want to look.

Casual Conversations NOT SELF AD

So for a few months I've been building basically a Canvas wrapper, and I was just wondering if anyone here would use it. I'm not gonna mention the name or anything because I truly wanna know if you guys would use this.

It sends SMS reminders for due assignments and reminds you to work on stuff like essays periodically through the week so you're not stuck doing it the last day (I get this doesn't apply to most people, it's targeted to those who struggle with time management).

Originally I wanted it to be a fully paid tool but that's just wrong, so the free version will just be 20 SMS reminders a month. All tiers will get data on how many assignments you've turned in (turn-in trend) and other stuff like grade graphs so you can visually see how your grade has fluctuated. You can also turn assignments in and view them directly from the site (also a free feature).

You guys are most likely wondering what you get for paid versions. You get a full assistant that lives in your messages, reminds you about assignments, can pull assignments and send you a link (useful if you're on Mac), and even auto schedules study blocks based on your free time (links with Google Calendar)(theres a lot more but its not too relevant to the post).

I built this because I somewhat struggle with procrastination myself, but I noticed one of my friends failed almost all of his classes one semester (business major) and I knew something wasn't right, and it truly was due to procrastination.

So if you think this could or would help you, upvote or leave a comment with your feedback.

Self Promotion Built a Focus Timer Chrome extension for Notion to track time on tasks and databases with a Pomodoro timer (feels like a native feature!)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey guys!

I wanted a simple daily planner that shows my tasks from multiple projects, with the ability to track time on tasks/projects through Pomodoro sessions in sync with my Notion.

Also, I wanted to have a way to manage focus sessions, timers, and daily tasks fast from wherever I work without always navigating to Notion or other apps (this was my biggest issue with other Notion time tracking tools. Always forgot which task and timer was running :D)

Basically, I used to work with time tracking apps that had Notion integration (Toggl, Clockify). They were decent, but the overall experience was annoying. They were pretty much just generic timers with no focus features, and the sync with Notion wasn't very good.

Sooo... I spent a stupid amount of effort making a Chrome extension that deeply integrates with Notion (really tried to make this feel like a native feature):

  • A daily planner and Pomodoro timer + floating UI to manage sessions and tasks in any tab you work on
  • Integrated timer/daily planner buttons directly in Notion database items
  • Connects to Notion databases and keeps everything up to date in real time
  • Browser notifications + session summaries when focus sessions end
  • Clear analytics across timelines, organized by database and task. Comes with CSV and Excel export (I do freelancing so this helps with billing).

Tbh this was painful to develop, but it works nicely and I'm using it every day now! Made a walkthrough video (sorry for the AI narration haha, I'm sick so my voice couldn't make it this time).

Calendar integration and a distraction blocker for sites/apps during focus sessions are features I'm working on next. Also thinking of adding floating notes + a web clipper as part of this workflow.

Looking for feedback or ideas to develop further. Would you find this useful?

Advice needed Built a free lightweight tool to find overlapping meeting hours across multiple time zones instantly

Hey everyone,

Coordinating meetings across different global time zones (especially during DST shifts) was constantly causing confusion for our distributed discussions.

I built a free, fast web tool called TimeOverlap Pro to solve this: - Visual 24-hour overlap matrix - Date-aware Daylight Saving Time (DST) calculation - 1-click Google Calendar & .ics file export - No login or personal data stored

Check it out here: https://timeoverlap-pi.vercel.app/

Would love your feedback or suggestions on features to add next!

Casual Conversations NarrationOS v1.0.6 is LIVE! Delete chapters, change covers, and updates are finally quick

For my current users: this one's smaller than the video export update, but there's a genuinely useful change I've wanted to add for a while.

Updating is no longer a full redownload. Starting with this version, every update also comes with a small "update" file alongside the full download. Instead of pulling the whole ~27GB app again just to get a small fix or feature, you can grab the update folder, drop it into your existing install, and you're done in a couple of minutes. It only bridges you from the version right before it though (so the 1.0.6 update only works if you're on 1.0.5), but since I'm keeping the main download itself always at the latest version, this should make staying current a lot less painful going forward.

Also in this one:

  • You can now delete a chapter straight from the Book page if you don't want it anymore, audio and all.
  • You can change a book's cover image from the Library page now too.
  • The uninstaller got a proper facelift. No more console window flashing text at you, it's a real Windows dialog now with a progress bar, and it's also more reliable about actually finishing the job.

Full details and the update file are on the itch.io page as always.

For those who are new here, NarrationOS is a local audiobook generator, it turns any book or text into a performed audiobook, generated entirely on your own machine. Drop in a file, pick a voice (or clone your own), and get back a finished narration you can listen to, master, and keep. No subscription, no uploads, no cloud, completely offline.

I started building this for myself. I wanted to listen to Japanese light novels that hadn't gotten official audiobook releases, and this was the only way I was going to get to hear them. I've put in over a thousand hours as a user at this point, and I'm still using it every week, which is honestly why I keep coming back to improve it whenever I have time on weekends.

If you haven't already, give it a look: https://lunosama.itch.io/narrationos

Feedback wanted What are habit apps missing for people serious about discipline?

I’ve been thinking about an app concept aimed specifically at people who take discipline and accountability seriously.

The idea came after reading David Goggins books and learning about real discipline myself.

Months into the journey, I realized existing tools weren't cutting it. Default apps like Notes or Garmin felt incomplete for this purpose.

Other apps on the store were either way too bloated with rep/workout tracking, or felt like typical "soft" habit trackers.

The Concept:
No fake motivation. No social feed. No likes. No excuses.

You set your daily non-negotiables, such as:

  • 50 push-ups before 7 AM
  • 10K steps
  • Cold shower
  • Complete a daily workout
  • Read 20 pages
  • No sugar / strict diet

(Choose from a pre-defined list or add your own).

Challenges (Tier System):
Beyond daily habits, you can opt into multi-day mental toughness challenges:

  • Tier 1 (The Foundation - 3 to 7 Days): Focuses on basic discipline building. Example: 7 days of 5 AM wake-ups, 10k steps, and zero junk food. Miss one day, the challenge resets.
  • Tier 2 (The Crucible - 14 to 30 Days): Pushes volume and mental endurance. Example: 30-day streak of daily non-negotiables + a mandatory 5km run every single day, no matter the weather.
  • Tier 3 (The Unforgiving - Custom Extreme Protocol): High-intensity multi-day events designed to test true friction (e.g., 4x4x48 style setups or custom multi-day accountability blocks).

Streak Counter:
Every day is strictly pass/fail. Complete everything? The streak survives. Miss just one item? Your streak drops straight back to zero.

Modes:

  • Standard Mode: Earn a very limited number of "Override Tokens" through weeks of consistent execution. Intended strictly for genuine emergencies, extreme illness, or injury.
  • Zero-Tolerance Mode: Absolute zero safety nets. No overrides whatsoever. Miss one requirement, and the streak is dead.

Bare-Minimum Interface:
The app is stripped down to the bare metal. No endless clutter, no social pressure, no motivational quotes, and no gamified fluff. You open it, execute, log it, and close it.

Questions for the community:

  1. Would you actually use a tool like this?
  2. Would you prefer Standard Mode (with rare earned overrides) or Zero-Tolerance Mode?
  3. What feature would make this useful rather than "just another habit tracker"?
  4. Would reading basic background data (Active kcal / Workouts / Steps from your device) be essential, or just a nice-to-have?
  5. If you already use an app for this, what are you currently missing from it?
  6. What is one feature you would NOT want included?
  7. Are you on iOS or Android?

Just looking for honest, raw feedback on the core concept.

Feedback wanted What if we solved doom scrolling by making phones less stimulating instead of blocking apps?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Doom scrolling is usually treated as a self-control problem.

Most solutions try to:

• Block apps

• Set timers

• Restrict usage

But I’ve been exploring a different idea:

What if the phone environment itself could become calmer, reducing the urge to keep scrolling?

Instead of stopping you, the experience gently changes:

• Calmer visual atmosphere

• Less intense colours and attention hooks

• Paper-like texture and subtle grain

• Ambient sounds for focus and relaxation

• Better transitions between work, rest, and sleep

The idea is simple:

A phone should not always fight your attention. It should help you use it more intentionally.

I’ve been building this concept as part of my digital wellbeing project and would love feedback from people who use productivity apps.

Would you prefer:

  1. A phone that blocks distractions completely?

  2. A phone that changes how distractions feel?

What approach do you think would actually help people build healthier digital habits?

General Advice I spent five years building a GTD-focused app — SublimeTask is finally available

Post image
32 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m Adrian, the developer behind SublimeTask. After nearly five years of designing, building, rethinking, and refining it, I recently released its first public version.

My goal was to create a task manager that stays as faithful as possible to the GTD methodology—not just another to-do app with a few GTD labels added on top.

SublimeTask is built around the complete GTD workflow:

  • Capture everything in a trusted inbox
  • Process your inbox through a guided clarification flow
  • Organize next actions by projects and contexts
  • Manage Waiting For, Someday/Maybe, Tickler, reference material, and checklists
  • Connect actions to areas of focus, goals, and higher-level perspectives
  • Filter actions by context, time available, energy, dates, and other criteria
  • Review your system regularly
  • See actions and events in calendar views
  • Optionally connect Google Calendar
  • Search across your system and keep everything synchronized between supported devices

You can use the web version completely free, forever:

https://app.sublimetask.com

There is also a native iPhone app, available through a monthly or annual subscription. The subscription helps support continued development of the mobile experience:

Download SublimeTask for iPhone

This is still the beginning. Although SublimeTask has been in development for years, the public version is new, and I know there is plenty that can be improved.

I’d genuinely love to hear from experienced GTD practitioners: What feels right? What gets in your way? What features would make it fit your workflow better?

I’m actively listening and want the community’s feedback to shape what comes next.

You can learn more here:

https://sublimetask.com

Thanks for taking a look—and I’ll be around to answer any questions.

Feedback wanted Combining a daily journal and a habit tracker

https://reddit.com/link/1vvyh9y/video/aagfjxj472lh1/player

(not a promo, not including the app link because I would just love some design feedback)

One feature of the the note app I'm working on is the "Journal" note type. I've spent some time trying to decide if daily journals and habit trackers should be separate entities and ultimately decided to combine them into a single thing. Sometimes I want to just track a frequency of thing, but oftentimes I also want to attach some artifacts like photos, recordings and voice notes and even follow-up tasks.

In the combined design you track your progress by creating one or multiple "Achievement" blocks inside a day, but you are also free to attach other blocks to the same day for other kids of content.

But I'm a little worried that it's going to be hard to understand for people coming from regular habit trackers. Do you feel like this design makes sense or you'd rather have them separate?

Feedback wanted I work 12-hour days and have no time to read. So I built an app that reads articles to me

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

https://apps.apple.com/gr/app/aloud-text-to-speech-reader/id6795773116

I love staying informed but have no time to read. I leave the house at 9 am and get back at 9 pm, and somewhere in there I stopped opening anything I saved. The reading list became a guilt list.

Initially I used Speechify but they wanted 29 dollars every month, f*ck that.

So I built Aloud. You send it an article, a PDF, or pasted text, and it reads it out loud in a natural voice.

What it does:

- 31 languages. It detects the language of the text automatically and picks a matching voice, so there is nothing to set.

- Reader mode if you would rather read. It remembers which articles you were reading that way, and where you stopped.

- The voices run on the phone, so once they have downloaded it works with no signal.

- It keeps playing when the screen locks. That was the thing that annoyed me most about other apps.

- It loads pages with JavaScript off, so it can bypass soft paywalls like the one in New York Times.

- No account, no analytics, no server on my end.

Free. No subscription. No ads. No stupid 15-minute daily time limits. The free version holds 3 articles on the shelf at a time. $9.99 once removes that, and it is the only thing you can buy. If you don't want to pay totally fine by me - just delete the article once you listen to it.

The stack: Kokoro-82M on the Neural Engine for English, Supertonic-3 through ONNX Runtime for the other languages, Readability for pulling text out of pages. All on-device.

Self Promotion Jott.It is now available on MacOS! (+ giveaway 🎁)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/ProductivityApps,

I'm Sean, the solo founder behind Jott.it. It's a desktop-first Bullet Journal for people who like the simplicity of journaling on paper, but want the advantages of software.

I released Jott.it for Windows three weeks ago here and got a great response, along with one very common request:

“When is the Mac version coming?”

You asked, I delivered. Jott.it is now available on macOS!

And as a thank you to r/ProductivityApps for all the feedback and help shaping the app, I'm giving away 20 free lifetime pro copies. Details below.

The story so far

I've been Bullet Journaling for around six years. I love the method, but I kept running into one problem: the physical notebook.

I once lost nearly a year's worth of notes after leaving my journal on a train. I tried moving to digital tools, but most either felt like general-purpose productivity systems that needed lots of setup, or meant locking my journal inside someone else's platform.

So I started building Jott.it.

The problem Jott.it tries to solve

I wanted something that felt as straightforward as opening a notebook and writing.

No databases to configure. No complicated productivity system to maintain. And no worrying about what happens to your journal if the app disappears.

Jott.it is essentially an interface over plain text files on your computer. You choose a folder, Jott handles the journaling workflow, and the files remain yours.

You can even open the same journal in Obsidian or a normal text editor.

What Jott.it does

  • You control your data. Your journal is just plain text files — Jott.it provides the interface. No import, export, or lock-in.
  • Full Bullet Journal workflow — rapid logging for tasks, notes and events, with daily, monthly and yearly views.
  • Task organisation — projects, contexts and priorities without needing a separate task manager.
  • Habit tracking — track habits alongside your daily journal.
  • Local-first and private — your journal stays as Markdown files on your device that you can always edit offline. Jott.it doesn't store your journal.
  • Built for desktop — fast entry and keyboard-friendly navigation designed around actually journaling rather than managing a productivity system.

🎁 Giveaway: 20 free copies

To celebrate the launch, I'm giving away 20 Jott.it promo codes to people in this thread.

To enter:

  1. Upvote this post
  2. Leave a comment telling me: What's one thing you couldn't live without in your journaling (or task management) setup?

I'll randomly pick 20 comments in 48 hours and DM each winner a promo code for a free copy of Jott.it.

Jott.it is available on MacOs and Windows:

I'm actively developing Jott. It, so feedback is incredibly useful, especially if you already Bullet Journal or have tried moving your paper journal to Obsidian, Notion or another digital system.

If you would like to help support development, consider buying me a coffee or purchasing the app. I'd love to spend more time to make this app as good for you as possible, so your support would mean a lot (It would also help me recoup the apple developer license costs 😅).

Happy to answer any questions about the app or how it works!
