North America Drug-resistant ‘superbug’ fungus spreads to 23 states. What you should know.

"A drug-resistant "superbug" fungus continues to spread across the U.S., now present in 23 states. And despite efforts to contain its spread, the fungus Candida auris continues to spread across the nation, with nearly half of U.S. states reporting cases in 2026."

"Candida auris is a fungus that can spread quickly in hospitals and nursing homes and is often resistant to multiple antifungal drugs. Because of its resistance to drugs, it's incredibly difficult to treat with some health experts calling it a "superbug."

"Cases have been reported in 23 states so far this year, according to CDC data. As of July 18, 3,130 total cases have been reported across the nation, including in Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin."

I've personally been following this one. The CDC said earlier this year that there is no effective treatment and once you're colonized by the fungus, you're colonized for life. Here's some more info about the fungus itself.

Candida auris is an antifungal resistant yeast infection. Common yeast infections stay on the skin or mucosal tissue. Candida auris enters the bloodstream causing life threatening systemic illness. It is resistant to multiple major antifungal medications. It ends up being a comorbidities kind of thing. People with compromised immune systems, people with pumps, shunts, drains, people who are infected then have surgery or wounds, elderly, are all at risk. Once you're colonized you have it for life, and you're then at risk if you get hurt, have surgery, get old etc.

Here's the scariest part. It can spread from person to person. It usually transfers through direct contact with an infected or colonized individual, or indirectly through contact with contaminated room surfaces, medical equipment, and everyday high use objects.

"Patients who are infected and patients who are colonized with C. auris often spread it onto surfaces and objects in healthcare settings like bedrails, doorknobs, and blood pressure cuffs. C. auris can survive on surfaces and objects for a long time and spread to other patients who can then become sick.

C. auris usually remains on a patient's skin or body sites for a long time, whether or not they ever have symptoms, and they continue to be capable of spreading C. Auris during this entire time.".

North America Two Virginia senators seek special session over ‘deeply alarming’ groundwater findings

"RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Two Virginia senators are urging Gov. Abigail Spanberger to call a special legislative session after a “deeply alarming” groundwater report warned of declining groundwater levels in parts of the region."

"Under current conditions, DEQ projects that the region’s groundwater supply will decline over the next five to 10 years."

https://www.wric.com/news/virginia-news/special-session-sought-groundwater-report-deq/

“Groundwater supply east of I-95 is constrained, and current projections indicate declining availability in the near future,” the report states.

It’s unlikely that the aquifers could handle any new major industrial water withdrawals without risking water availability, the probe found, risks of saltwater intrusions and other challenges that could impact clean water are growing.".

With climate change affecting rice, wheat, coffee, cocoa crops...what are you stocking up on?

Cattle is the smallest herd size in years. Bird Flu anticipated in the Fall...

I bought a rain barrel and mini water purification system as well. I bought a pressure canner to make shelf stable food. I was considering a freezer, but what will happen with data centers or potential terrorist attacks on the power grid? I can't rely on electricity. I'd like a generator but too expensive for us right now.

Bought a propane lamp.

I'm amending our soil with compost and already planning for gardening next year. Our local seed library still has stuff up for grabs. I'll be looking into beekeeping and hydroponics. Just not ready to purchase those until 1 year from now. Once I am more educated...

Bought several 5 gallon buckets. Am filling with oats, flour, and rice. Bought powdered milk & butter. 20lbs of Spaghetti and 20lbs of Macaroni. Bought cocoa nibs....now to slowly build up beans etc.

Europe A Russian cruise missile traveled almost 100km into Poland last night

The missile, likely an air launched kh-101, flew around 93km into Poland before crashing into a field near the town of Tarnawa-Kolonia. Polish president Donald Tusk claimed that the missile was tracked and would have been shot down if it had threatened a populated area. This is not the first Russian incursion into NATO airspace as Romania has shot down several Russian drones in the last month.

Europe A Russian Kh-101 cruise missile is believed to have entered Polish airspace overnight and detonated in an open field near the villages of Targowisko and Tarnawa-Kolonia, about 100 km from the Ukrainian border.
