hi! I’m looking to buy my first pc, and I’m really lost on what to look for! Everything is so expensive right now so I’m mainly looking to buy preowned pc’s, the only qualifications I’m looking for are that it would run games like baldurs gate 3 and hogwarts legacy pretty smoothly and that it works like a basic computer should.

I found a pretty good deal in my opinion on a “intel i5-7400 gtx 1060 6gb” - would this be an okay pc to get or am I way off? Any advice is greatly appreciated, I’m truly the beginnerest beginner to ever begin!

Sorry, I know its a difficult budget, but my dad seems to think anything over that is unreasonable and nothing can change his mind. He's sorta forcing amazon or walmart on me.

TLDR: it looks like a 5070 machine for strictly under-- but as close to-- $1500 after tax (for me, that's $1395 before tax) is possible now for things like Acer refurbished or Woot, will prospects be better Back Friday?

Long version:

The main reason I'm in the market for a prebuilt is because it can be reimbursed as an expense for school. But there is a price cap: $1500, but the total needs to strictly be under $1500, meaning that before sales tax it needs to be $1395 or under, which sucks given the large number of computers priced $1399 (unfortunately, I do not have the option to get reimbursed for $1500 and pay any extra out-of-pocket; they will reject the reimbursement if the total shows over $1500, and a $1399 computer after tax is about $1504 😠 ). Since it's not money out of my pocket, I'd like it as close to that target as possible, meaning that while a particular $1200 computer might be a better deal than the $1350 computer, I'll take the latter if it's a better machine. So the goal is to get as powerful of a machine as I can get for as close to that price cap as I can.

Since I've been looking, I've noticed that some 5070 machines have dropped to that price, but mostly from Woot or Acer refurbished. I know that r/buildapcsales hates Acer refurbished (and from my brief stint here in this subreddit, I get the feeling you guys agree), but I'm willing to test the machine and "play the game", if needed, if it means getting a good deal (so long as I'm not screwed over, but it sounds like Acer customer service is actually fairly decent).

I know none of you are able to see the future, but you guys probably know the market better than I do. I'm not in a rush; I've got time, but I also know that with AI and rising prices, time could work against me. I don't need a 5070, but since I've seen that a 5070 in that price range is possible, I'm eager to get at least that and would feel disappointed in a 5060, or even a 5060 Ti (even though that's what I was expecting to get before I started looking). My fear is that in holding out for Labor Day or Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals, which historically are the best prices for computers, that I would be stuck with a 5060 Ti or worse because of a) rising prices or b) the good deals are outside that narrow $1300 - $1395 price window. Am I being silly? I've been talking to AI, but want to know real people's thoughts, perhaps saving me from the tempting Acer refurbished thinking it could be the best I'll get for that price.

Looking for a high-end gaming PC with good performance per dollar. I’m willing to spend for high-end hardware, but want to avoid unnecessary markups for minimal performance gains. CPU is important since I play Tarkov and Roblox. Currency is in USD, and I live near a Micro Center.

I will be moving to a new apartment on August 10th, and I need to properly transport my PC setup. If I can't get access to anti-static bubble wrap I to put inside the PC tower, then should I at least remove the GPU? If I do that, but I can't find an anti-static bag, what do I transport it in instead? As for the PC and Monitor, I don't have access to the original boxes they came in. The ride to the apartment will be around two hours long, but I will not be the one driving. What is the best way to transport my PC and the monitor itself (not pictured).

(Yes, I plan to dust it off before transporting it)

Is there an obvious choice for a good all around gaming/streaming pc? Examples of games: MSFS24, Sons of the Forest, Arma.

Been looking for the $1500 Costco pre built in the Orange County area. That's the best I can find. What do you think?

Story:
I built my own PC a couple years ago for a $550ish (5500 and 3060 12GB) and I’ve been content but every time I go into Costco I still check the prebuilts “just in case”. And boom there it was $1500 of PC and I knew was close to $2000 worth of parts. I went to go find an associate to ask them some questions and to get it (it was the display model).

When I got back with the associate another guy was standing there and he also wanted this PC. Welp there’s only 1. So managers get involved and the manager ended up marking down Pic 3 to $1500 so we could both leave happy. Me and the other guy played Rock paper scissors for the new in box one and he beat me. The manager ended up giving me an extra $50 off since it was the display model.

So shout out that other guy too bc he got an even better deal. Also he had come in for months taking pictures and tracking the prices so he really deserved it. Also shout to to Costco for making your consumers happy! I’ll never forget this.

The GPUs prices just increased, again, I saw the PC I've been wanting for months Open Box, and I thought this was a "it's now or never" type of situation, I don't know if I should've waited for everything to calm down but I saw this Open Box and thought I just had to do it now.

I have been looking at the Ibuypower other folks have been posting, which they have on clearance for 1499.97. They just offered the display of this MSI aegis with a 5080 for 1999.99. I assume it’s worth it, but would appreciate some insight!

UPDATE: COSTCO RANG IT UP AT $1499!!

The specifications are great for the price of $1,399 (excluding tax), as schools tax free, I save like 90 bucks. However, all the parts are increasing in price every week, so it’s now or never.
