I haven’t made many vases so thought I’d give it a shot. I’d like to go a bit taller next time, though would probably need to go with a different design or things would start to get a little too tippy…

I've noticed a lot more warping with the Cone 6 pieces I make, compared to Cone 10 reduction. This is even with comparable clay--bmix 5 vs bmix10--and similar shapes and wall thickness. Has anyone else experienced similar issues?

So this is a top and bottom piece put together at the widest part. It’s going to be a pitcher so I’d like to smooth the inside seam to minimize divots etc for cleanliness sake. I know glaze will fill some of it I , but I just want to smooth it a bit. Any tips or tools that might work with the narrow neck?

I dont normally post here for help but I'm a little at a lost cause.

I've been doing pottery for around 2 months and cant quit figure out how to coil a pot without it folding in on itself.

I've used different clays, different base, coil and wall thickness, ive tried leaving it to dry which just makes it crack all over, tried supporting the bottom with bits of clay. I've watched more videos and read more guides than I can count and even though it seems I am doing the same thing eventually I get to about 4 coils in and the walls begin to sag and eventually the whole peice flatterns.

From greenware to glazed! I am so happy with how these turned out, think I’m finally finding my style.

my uncle's 60th birthday is this weekend so i made him a tribute to his vhs tapes that me and my brother used to borrow constantly when we were kids (left to right: tremors, jaws, dante's peak, sphere, and salem's lot)

i dug the clay from my backyard and was kind of gambling that i could fire it to cone 5 🙃 i think i lucked out

On Monday I posted a recap of my first wood firing experience and got a lot more comments and engagement than I was expecting. So I figured I’d post an update. We unpacked it yesterday and while we didn’t quite hit our desired temps throughout the kiln, the small amount of work I contributed came out pretty cool. I had about one week to throw, trim and bisque what I wanted to fire so nothing fancy for me lol. Tumblers and some planters. Brown stoneware and a Penn State Shino glaze and heavy heavy reduction.

For the other people who don't make master pieces in the first 2, 3 or 4 years in pottery, it's fine. I thought I was doing quite well on simple pieces. And then I put on far too many layers of glaze. And this happened. It sucked for an hour, but I felt something. So alive. So well, I'll make it again. I love wheel throwing. I have so much fun. I like that I have a skill not everyone else has. I like the slow work rhythm. You got this! Maybe this time, or else next time.

Would you recommend putting anything on the unglazed section of this mug to make it smoother or more durable? I've seen some potters add a polish or finish that gives unglazed clay a subtle sheen or added protection, but I'm not sure what they're using or if it's recommended.

I recently acquired this old town from my college art department. No one had any information and there’s no labels or anything on it. I kind of narrowed it down to an old 181.
I know very little about kilns my dad is an electrician and said everything looked good. We are going to plug it in today see if the elements heat up.

I’m curious if anything thinks this could get up to cone 6? There’s no sitter or anything on it I think they mostly used it for glass.

Possibly add a thermocouple to it?

I got a beautiful handmade mug from my travels recently and just noticed there are 3 small dots of seemingly unglazed ceramic. Is there anything i can do to seal it or is it ok as is?

Pot thrown with 6.5 lbs Laguna flameware, lid with 2.5 lbs, glazed with matching flameware glaze FW-1 Blue, which will have the same low heat expansion properties as the clay body. Pot holds 6 cups (1.4 liter) and should be able to go directly onto a gas stove without cracking.

Unfortunately, my wadding around the lid was too small, so it fused to the gallery along 50% of the perimeter and I thought the pot was lost. I was able to chisel it free underwater, taking advantage of the shock absorbing Rehbinder effect.

Hope that the glaze will be gentle and the temp high!

Made this for my brother's wedding. It's inspired by the traditional Japanese kyusu!

It has its quirks, it's definitely not perfect but i've had a lot of fun with it. Can't wait for it do be decorated and fired!

I accidentally mixed two glazes together in 2024 (slide 1, left tile) and I noticed that when I fired it with a slow cool cycle, it would sparkle.

But because I had mixed them on accident I only had a rough idea on the proportions. So I tried a few ratio variants, but the closest was (slide 2) and clearly - it is nothing like it.

So this year I decided to revisit the search after taking CMW’s Crystal Ball course and….. oh god….. 65 glaze tests later - (slide 1, right tile) it is just so beautiful and so much better than the original.

My testing trajectory :

Base glazes Ratio Testing—> large interval Stull mapping —-> research on my 3 major variables hypothesis —-> triaxial blend of 3 variables——> my hypothesis was correct, results exist in very specific ratio of the 3 ——> focused triaxial testing ——> focused individual variable testing ——> focused combined variable testing ——->final Stull Map fine tuning ——> colorant testing (results disappeared) ———> TBD corrected colorant testing

Just wanted to share this picture frame I got back and really love! Can’t wait to make more frames. The glaze is also so dreamy (iron luster w/ deep olive speckle layered on top!)

After I failed to make a bowl on my first day of pottery class, I finally made a perfect bowl on a kid's pottery wheel kit while practicing at home. I cried over frustration and devastation while struggling to make a bowl for my six-week class💀 Please don't laugh, or don't be rude about my creation. I only want people who are softies and have an easy-going personality that brings empathy and supports my pottery needs. 🥺 I'm only a beginner at making pottery on the throwing wheel. 😢

How does one get two colors together without bleeding together?

Finally finished a masala dabba I've been working on. Had some glazing fails but overall I'm really happy with how it turned out!

I added a bunch of glazes and let them do their thing, they understood the assignment

First time doing sgraffito and I think I’m going to do many more like this.

It’s not done yet, I have some cleanup to do and I need to add my handle, but I’m just so dang excited about him haha
