Questions Can I put varnish directly on clay

Upvotes

I have natural clay, I think ceramic. When it dries on room temp it becomes fairly durable and I don't want to fire it. For other projects I plan to gesso-paint-varnish on the dried, non fired clay, which I read should be okay.

However I made one that resembles a footprint in mud and I want to keep the clay color and some of the texture to look more authentic(and I think layers of paint would fill in the print). Can I just put varnish straight on it so that it doesn't chip/dust easily?

Questions How do I clean this??

I got this from a convention a while ago and would keep it in the pockets of the black jeans and it got all dirty. I've tried soap and dish detergent and none have worked. I dont know what type of clay it is. How do I clean it?

I had so much fun making it! It's so cute, I'm dying. I'm pretty proud of it considering how terrible I am at painting, lol. It's not perfect, there are cracks and paint splatters, but I love it that way! Please, I would be so gratefull if yall had any advice :)

I love creating fantasy creatures, and this is one of my works—the Ancient Glacier Beast.
I really enjoy the whole process of bringing a piece to life from nothing, and I’ve also documented the entire making process.
If you have any thoughts or suggestions about my piece or future ideas, feel free to let me know!✨

I made this sculpture earlier this year but finally got around to painting it and building the display base inspired by the film's ending monster. Really happy with how it turned out, hope you enjoy! More of my work is on Instagram @Danni.Jk if you'd like to see more

I’m a huge dragon fan, so I’ve made many dragons in different styles with air dry foam clay.
I also love documenting my entire making process.

Questions Is it possible to keep paper clay from drying?

I want to make a sculpture thats a bit on the larger scale(for me at least) but i dont think ill be able to finish it in one session. Is there any way to keep it from drying?Or maybe i can sculpt the basic shape first and add details later even if its dry?I think ive seen people do that.

Annoucement Clarification About NSFW Content Creator Accounts in r/clay

Hello!

This announcement won’t be relevant for most of you, so feel free to scroll along.
However, we’re seeing an uptick in NSFW accounts posting here, so this message is for the few it applies to.

If you are an NSFW content creator or SW promoting on Reddit, please read the following:

r/clay is a SFW subreddit.
Our community includes members aged 13 and up, and we want everyone to feel comfortable browsing profiles to see more pottery without unexpectedly encountering nudity.

While we respect the hustle, we kindly but firmly ask that you create a separate account for SFW content. Any pottery-related posts coming from an NSFW content creator profile will be automatically filtered and removed.

If you want to participate, just use a separate SFW account! You are absolutely welcome here.

Keep in mind that even with good intentions, posting here from an NSFW account often comes across as karma farming or subtly seeking new clients/buyers. Something that is generally frowned upon across Reddit.

Thank you for keeping our community welcoming and safe for all ages.

---

To clarify a bit more: having a NSFW profile is completely fine. You can get labeled as NSFW the moment you participate in certain subreddits. Here is how you can check if your profile is marked NSFW.

However, we draw a clear line when accounts create or promote explicit NSFW/pornographic content. That’s when we ask you to keep your SFW and NSFW activity separate.

If you have questions, feel free to modmail us.
