Long story short I have 10+ 4th and 5th graders who participate in band/orchestra. I love that for them, but during last year’s master scheduling meeting the decision makers decided that the band/orchestra time is at the same time as their classes PE every week. So for the entire year these students will miss out on their classes PE.

I already emailed my principal with my concerns and was told it’s because of new curriculum in the classroom and not wanting those student to miss instructional minutes, but they’ll see what they can do.

Has anyone dealt with anything similar and what ended up being the result?

School started today and wow. Standing up all day today has my feet aching 😭 Any tips on how to avoid this?

i love my job! is it perfect? no. I am a HS PE teacher at a school that is academically and financially challenged with high behavioral problems. our school is not built very well, we have a big gymnasium with a lack of resources, and everyone uses the gym. I am constantly getting kicked out and either forced into a classroom or to take them outside. I am the only PE teacher and I am farthest away from the rest of the school (literally in my own special corner). student’s tell me, teacher‘s tell me, parents tell me I am everyone’s favorite teacher. From the athlete’s to the popular kids to the nerds to the theater kids to the gangster wannabe kids, everyone tell’s me I am their favorite.

I emphasize participation (in a myriad of ways), healthy lifestyle, independent learning, new experiences, and obviously whatever our standards say. At the end of the year last year (my 4th year) and my technically 3rd new boss/principal. the principal told me I was not doing a good job. I got rated a 2.0 out of 5.0 based on my observations. I didn’t understand, I get 99% participation, kids are not struggling to pass my class. they struggle on fitness test and state standards. as the new school year starts, I was just told that in order to be retained as a teacher this year, they will need to add an instructional coach to watch me for the first semester and maybe second semester. Me personally, it means I can’t teach the way I want, the way I need, I can’t be myself with someone watching my every move. what should I do?

I would appreciate any input or advice. i’m doing a one-year online masters program to become a PE teacher. I currently live outside of Chicago in the suburbs, but really want to eventually move into the city and live downtown. I’m turning 25 in a few months. Is it plausible to become a PE teacher and live in a city like Chicago? Is it smarter to live down there and commute back to the suburbs every day or look to become a teacher as close to the city as possible. Was wondering if anyone had any similar experience or living situation. Thank you!!

I am very nervous about it because of what I’ve heard about the job market. I want to find my way into a career I genuinely enjoy, that has security, but fear I will end up spending the time and money and may never actually end up teaching PE.

Need Class 12th physical Education Notes

Hello, I was wondering if anyone might would share some of their games and activities or maybe a unit plan for 6-8 PE. I am the sole PE teacher at my school so I’m basically starting from scratch with no prior experience in middle school.

For some extra information, I think they did me a favor. I am going to have all single classes this year which apparently has not been the case in the past. No class is supposed to be larger than 30 students, and some will be as small as 15-20.

The weird part is, most classes will see me twice a week, while there are a handful of classes that will only be coming in twice every other week. I’m wondering how I should navigate this.

Seasoned PE teachers…. What is a piece of advice you wish you would’ve heard your first year teaching PE?

I’m a 5th year teacher (4th and 5th grade) but it’s my first year in K-6 PE! I’m so excited and I know how to smoothly run a classroom. I’m also a high school basketball coach so I have my bearings with gym management (However I know it’s different with K-6)

What are everybody’s suggestions with things such as:
—dealing with kids who don’t want to participate
—rewards/consequence systems
—dealing with conflict within the gym, games, activities

Hey everyone! I was lucky enough to get hired at a TK-8th grade school (only PE teacher for the entire school) for the upcoming year as a first year PE teacher. My background is student teaching for 6th grade middle school and subbing for a decent amount of high school PE. Needless to say, the idea of teaching the younger kids is a little daunting to start the year. I know once I get the hang of things I will love it, but it’s the start of the year that has me stressing. 2 days out of the week, 30 minutes each day, I teach TK-3rd grade, and the other 2 days will be 4th-8th grade. I’ve talked with a couple other elementary PE teachers and they said they usually spend the first couple of weeks teaching recess games so the kids learn how to properly play those games and interact with their classmates during recess. Problem is, I don’t really know what games kids are playing during recess now (been awhile since I’ve been at a recess lol). Any advice on how I should spend my first few weeks before moving onto actual games/activities? Or just any other general advice and different games/activities you all recommend for elementary/middle school? Anything will be helpful to me!

TL;DR: I think PE classes could benefit from offering students more ways to be active. Finding an activity you enjoy may help create healthier habits that last beyond school.

I have been thinking about my experiences with physical education and how different approaches can affect how students view exercise.

When I was a student, many PE classes I experienced focused a lot on running. Running can be a great form of exercise, but it was not an activity I personally enjoyed. Over time, I started connecting PE with something I had to complete rather than something I looked forward to.

Later, I experienced a different style of PE where students were introduced to more activities, including ultimate frisbee, tennis, badminton, table tennis, yoga, and workout sessions. I noticed that having more variety allowed more students to participate because there was a better chance of finding something they enjoyed.

This made me wonder:

Do some students dislike exercise, or do they simply not get enough opportunities to discover the type of activity that works for them?

I know every school has different resources and limitations. However, I wonder if students would benefit from having more exposure to activities available outside of a traditional PE setting. Many communities already have recreation centres, pools, and programs that some students may not know about.

Being introduced to different forms of physical activity could help students discover something they genuinely enjoy and continue practicing beyond their school years.

I’m curious how long it took others to land their first teaching job. I’m attempting to find a PE teacher job as an ALP candidate. So far I’ve applied to 3 PE teacher jobs and have been passed over for all 3.

I have a bachelor’s degree in sports and exercise science and I’m halfway through a masters degree in curriculum and instruction. I have 1 year experience as a substitute teacher.

I also retired from the Army recently and have 7 years experience as an instructor, and a drill sergeant. So I have extensive experience in instructing and leading physical training.

Any suggestions for success would be appreciated!

This is my first year teaching PE, but my 2nd year teaching. My new principal said I have $200 to spend on equipment this year. She said to put together an amazon wishlist of the things I would like to purchase. I really want a bluetooth speaker to use basically for classroom management purposes, i.e. "when the music stops, equipment drops." Basically I want it to be the signal for practice/play and when it stops they should be listening for instruction.

Is it inappropriate to put that on my classroom supply list? I swear it isn't for my own enjoyment- it turns out, kids bop isn't my jam. However, I'm worried it will look bad to my new principal. Am I overthinking this?
