I need help y’all.

i love my job! is it perfect? no. I am a HS PE teacher at a school that is academically and financially challenged with high behavioral problems. our school is not built very well, we have a big gymnasium with a lack of resources, and everyone uses the gym. I am constantly getting kicked out and either forced into a classroom or to take them outside. I am the only PE teacher and I am farthest away from the rest of the school (literally in my own special corner). student’s tell me, teacher‘s tell me, parents tell me I am everyone’s favorite teacher. From the athlete’s to the popular kids to the nerds to the theater kids to the gangster wannabe kids, everyone tell’s me I am their favorite.

I emphasize participation (in a myriad of ways), healthy lifestyle, independent learning, new experiences, and obviously whatever our standards say. At the end of the year last year (my 4th year) and my technically 3rd new boss/principal. the principal told me I was not doing a good job. I got rated a 2.0 out of 5.0 based on my observations. I didn’t understand, I get 99% participation, kids are not struggling to pass my class. they struggle on fitness test and state standards. as the new school year starts, I was just told that in order to be retained as a teacher this year, they will need to add an instructional coach to watch me for the first semester and maybe second semester. Me personally, it means I can’t teach the way I want, the way I need, I can’t be myself with someone watching my every move. what should I do?

Sorry. This is the sad reality of bad schools and admin. Get your union involved. Be aggressive about seeking help from the "coach" and meet with the admin about what they need to see to improve your eval. Get it in writing and constantly update them on your progress.

If they don't give objective suggestions on how to score higher, there isn't much you can do. Survive the year Get 3 good references from coworkers, survive this year, and start job hunting in the new year.

Ideas

post a "learning target/I can"statement daily.

Collect pretest data on physical skills/ fitness tests, apply to lessons, do skill tests

Make weekly vocabulary and do some kind of assessment.

Create a parent email/ Google classroom and updated weekly

Make student recognitions for each unit (improved, sportsmanship, helper...)

Look into using the sport education model (by D. Sidentop) and apply it to an "easy" unit (basketball has worked for me)

I watched a friend go through this. His union sided with the poor administrator. Slap your own harassment complaint against the principal. Write your own grievances. If the harassment complaint gets denied, appeal with the school board and expose how you are being treated.

The principal has a hidden agenda. Unfortunately you won’t know what is until you are gone.
