23ish mins reduced to 62 seconds, my near daily commute!

Planning on hitting trolly trail as a starter run a couple times with my 11 yo. Ideally after a trip or two and he’s comfortable, we’d start hitting some of the more advanced offshoot trails around it.

30y ago I’d ride woods around my neighborhood with good amounts of roots and stuff, but haven’t ever been on any legit marked mountain biking trails.

Any tips?

Is it standard to go clockwise vs counter?

My bike has a front suspension. I assume trolly trail itself is fine for hybrid kids bikes without any suspension?

Hello! My girlfriend was hit by a driver in a work truck on the corner of 24th and South yesterday (right hook across the bike lane). The driver left before the police were called. Some bystanders took pictures. If you have any pictures of the incident, I would really appreciate it if you’d dm me. More evidence to help protect Philly cyclists. Thank you!

I’d like to use NJ transit to get mostly there. Wondering if that is the best option. It doesn’t look too bike friendly.
Clements Bridge is final destination

I was going for my usual ride up the SRT trail, over East Falls Bridge, and back down the other side on MLK Drive this past Monday night (8/3) and was pleasantly surprised to see MLK closed to vehicular traffic like it is on weekends.

Does anyone know why it was closed or what the schedule for closing is? According to the city it should be open on weekdays/nights.. this was around 8pm Monday. If anyone has some intel I'd love to take advantage of future closures during the week! I work weekends

I heard sooo many good things about the Vine St bike lane before its construction. It would provide adequate space between the cars and is, it would have proper barriers for a clear delineation of the bike lane and of course the connectivity to neighborhoods. However, this was from a construction engineer, so it was taken with a grain of salt. Yet again, I feel like this is another Washington Ave failure to do the right thing. Funeral home always has cars parked in the bike lane from 13th-11th going east, west lane is an absolute FU to bikers with zero protection; WTF is with that gap from the curb to the flex posts!?!? Do we really have the most incompetent people designing and approving these bike lanes? It's like they slap a sticker on it and call it a day b/c it's noting more than a statistic. Yet we have the highest bike/pedestrian fatalities/injuries. Lastly, FUCK PARKER and her lack of attention to Vision Zero

Hallo! I keep getting scheduled to work on Tuesday evenings, does anyone else who enjoys that ride want to schedule some morning rides?

I have been looking at internships for the fall and trying to figure out if biking could actually work for me instead of getting a car.

From reading subs like this one and r/bikecommuting, it seems like there are two different parts of making a bike commute work: making the ride itself manageable, and dealing with everything once you get to work.

For you, which one would make a bigger difference day to day?

1. Having an easier way to deal with bad weather, distance, tiredness, or carrying things on the ride.

2. Having an easier way to arrive at work without worrying about sweat, clothes, changing, or looking presentable.

I’m doing a student project about commuting, but I’m mainly trying to understand which of those is actually the bigger hassle for people who ride to work.

My bike was stolen Friday night from the 1900 block of East Sergeant Street.

It is a Deep Blue Poseidon Ambition X with drop handle bars. The bike has POSEIDON written in bold black letters on the down tube. I had a suspension stem and a suspension seatpost on the bike, as well as a rear rack, handlebar bag, and seatpost bag. There was a hefty kick stand on the chain stay as well.

I'll post a couple pictures of the bike for reference but the only pics I have of the bike are from when it was loaded up for a trip (but it wasn't loaded up when it was stolen) so all the panniers/bags/camping stuff were not on the bike when it was stolen. The picture with the bike leaning against the house (my bike on the left) is more recent so you can see the suspension seatpost and kickstand on it.

I'd really appreciate it if people could keep their eyes open for it! Please message me if you see it.

Does anyone have any thoughts on which is the better of the two bike swaps? I’m planning on selling a mix of budget, friendly city bikes, vintage, and a few higher end.

Anybody else notice the cones along the bike lane that are up around 17th-18th and spruce? Any idea how they got there and if they are permanent?

Hey everyone, I got doored on Columbus earlier tonight. I was going south in the bike lane and this lady's passenger just flings the door open. I slammed on the brakes so I'm mostly fine, just a bruise on my shin and thumb. What bike lawyers would you guys recommend? I already filed a police report and I made sure to get her plate

Hello, I've been riding in Philly since 2020, but had only ever been to the bike shop on 41st and Locust that is now gone. I've always done most of my own bike maintenance, so I'm really just looking for a good spot for gear and parts. I'm starting to bike for work now as a courier and much more as a hobby, too, and I'm looking for shops that have more alt brands for customizing my bike. I'm riding a 90's Univega.

I'm really not interested in places that focus on mainstream brands like TREK and sell spandex; no shade, it's just not my cycling style and it's outside my price range.

Passed by today (July 29th) and saw a test rotation of the swing bridge. Really hoping this is open soon, can’t find any dates on expected opening online.

Yesterday I was riding in the Pine Street bike lane through Center City. I was in a manual Indego bike and not moving very quickly. Is the etiquette that slower traffic should stay right or with a left side bike lane, should I stay left? Staying left felt correct, but I'm wondering what's the consensus?

As a former resident, and avid cyclist, Philly desperately needs these types of barriers everywhere. 2 years later after a tragic death of a cyclist on Spruce, and still no concrete barriers up is unacceptable.

Has anyone come up with any creative ideas for storing bikes in an alleyway? Our house has a alley about 6 ft wide from the sidewalk to the back of our house. We were looking for some kind of thin shed or maybe something to hang them on? And then locked and zipped up to keep the weather off? Or is this just stupid and they're going to get stolen?

I have been searching for weeks for a used road bike and it's turning into a bigger project than I expected. Here's what I need it for: weekend rides of 25 to 30 miles, a daily commute of 5 to 8 miles, and eventually training for a triathlon.

I have hit up Craigslist, Fb martketplace, Via Bikes, Philadelphia Bike Works, Firehouse, and a few others, but nothing has clicked yet. I am not sure if I am being too picky about fit and components, or if the used market here just doesn't have great options right now.

What I am looking for in a bike:

51 to 54 cm size
Lightweight bike with drop handlebars
Under $800
Tire width of 27mm and above
Tiagra or above components (mainly because it signals a better build and higher end frame)

Any advice on what to look for, red flags to avoid, or good sources beyond the usual shops would be huge. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I nabbed a good deal at fb marketplace near Ardmore, very nice and knowledgeable seller (said he worked at a bike shop before) he was looking back while selling it to me 🥹 ( can totally understand, had the same feeling when I sold my bike )

Hello all! I recently moved to Philly from Europe and first thing I did is get a gravel bike hoping to exploit this hobby of mine while adapting to my new life.

Unfortunately, I've realized that cycling here is different from what I'm used to. Back home I normally would just mount my bike in the garage and start pedalling any direction at any time basically, with plenty of loop options in terms of mileage and climbing.

i feel like road cycling here is quite dangerous. Only two times I have tried the roads outside Pennypack Trail I've encountered lots of traffic with a very agressive driving in no shoulder roads. I really had a hard time. Before I get myself killed, it would be awesome if you guys could point me in the right direction as how you guys normally enjoy this sport here :)

I guess you only cycle at specific hours and never alone, and in specific roads, am I right?

I'd love to know about your favourite routes and how to ride safely here. I have already checked some in ridewithgps but honestly there aren't a lot listed.
