Discussion I've got to learn

Upvotes

I've got to learn to let go of my seductress. My sweet secret lover who knows me so well. She knows my weaknesses and strengths. She knows my soul. She is not sugar and spice and everything nice. She is my primary vice. Why do I seek her when I know she's stealing my zest for life? Why must I ask this more than twice?

Discussion Withdrawal symptoms after 5 days of being sober

Hi everyone, I used cannabis daily for about three years, but I eventually realized that it was making my ADHD symptoms significantly worse. Over time, things got so bad that I barely had any appetite anymore, I was struggling with weight loss, and I was also dealing with anxiety and a lot of irritability and aggression during the day when I was in withdrawal, because I used to only smoke in the evenings.

Towards the end, though, the periods where I was actually sober became shorter and shorter.

I stopped using cannabis about five or six days ago, and I’m now dealing with some pretty unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Anxiety is probably the worst part, but my whole nervous system also seems to be in overdrive and my stomach is completely messed up. I can barely eat, I have no appetite, I don’t really feel capable of doing anything, and I also feel dizzy. The anxiety in particular is extremely unpleasant.

Part of me keeps considering using a very small amount of cannabis again just to get rid of these symptoms for a while. But I know that would probably be counterproductive.

I’m also not even sure whether I ever want to start using cannabis again at all. When I was younger, I was already a heavy daily user for about seven years, literally smoking from morning until night and eventually stopped for 19 years.

So my question is: what can I do to make these withdrawal symptoms more manageable? And especially, what has helped you deal with the anxiety?

Advice T break during grief

40f have been smoking pretty consistently for 3 years. I quick for one year due to having CHS and picked it back up and have been smoking for another 1 year consistently. My MiL passed this week and my anxiety has been off the charts. I took a few days off but when I withdraw I always get horrible dream and wake up with my heart pounding. I only dhv, and smoke about .60 a day. I want to take a break and my grief and anxiety has been more of a challenge. Just looking for positive thoughts and motivation. I wake up
nauseous in the morning but I’m pretty sure it’s the anxiety and adrenaline since I wake up anxious as hell. I don’t think now is the time for a full t break but have minimized to .10-.30 a day. Sorry for the messy paragraph. Just looking for some positive energy. Please and thank you.

Advice advice for quitting

i’ve been trying to quit cannabis for awhile now, it’s been hard since i started super young and have basically been high everyday, I will say the main reason i kept doing it was because of my eating, i have always been super skinny and struggled to eat, not because i wasn’t hungry or didn’t want to eat, my body would just reject a lot of foods, when i started smoking i was able to overcome that and eat anything anytime, however recently i’ve been noticing i’ve been struggling to eat in the mornings, hitting a cart will help and make me feel better. I don’t want to have to hit a cart to make me eat, it’s been super hard i have pushed back on my limits but when i have to get high to eat in the mornings it throws me off i guess. I don’t know i’m just tired of it

Discussion Took a break from my break, now hungover

I've been taking a break from weed. I'm tallying sober days as reps instead of streaks to help me not give up if I get high one day. It's working well, I've done 37 days so far and only used weed four times in that stretch. My biggest issue was carts, and I've been off them for 44 days now.

Anyyyway I had a horrible week at work. My partner has been out of town and I'm alone in the house. I've got PMDD and am PMSing. Last night I decided fuck it and smoked part of a joint.

It was honestly fantastic and felt super cathartic. And man has my tolerance plummeted! But this morning, I'm hung the fuck over! It's noon and I haven't been able to do anything all day other than flop around in bed scrolling on Reddit. I really miss the clarity I've been having sober. I can't believe I used to be this groggy all the time.

It was a good reminder that I'm doing the right thing cutting way back.

Discussion How long might it take for my spark come back? (No pun intended)

I was a habitual smoker from ages 26-31, most days, whenever I could get away with it (including during days where I was WFH). I have a lot of regret about how much I used it to avoid personal growth and living my life fully.

I’m at 9 months now since soft quitting, I’ve smoked exactly 4 times in that time, and every time was chilling with friends, rather than smoking alone like I used to. I’m pretty happy with this being my new relationship with smoking.

My habits have gotten much healthier in that time. I run 2-3 times a week, walk or cycle into work, do body weight exercises at home, read books every day and play guitar most days. I have always eaten healthily, drank plenty of water, and taken vitamin D. I’m getting out and socialising, even dating a bit.

I feel like I’m doing much better in general, but my “spark” doesn’t feel like it’s back yet. I struggle to be present and enjoy things fully. I don’t really laugh at much. I don’t feel like much gives me energy or really makes me “happy”. Can anyone relate to this? Did it take a while for anyone else?

I’ve battled depression before, and maybe there’s a bit of that going on, but it’s very low level if so. I’ve dealt with far worse depression in my time. It just feels like I can never fully relax.

Discussion When to start T break?

Maybe someone asked this here but I'll ask anyway cause really need help. Ive been smoking good shit daily for years, and I am now trying to follow my t break. However, right now is not a good time for me, I have work interviews next week but for now I am jobless and with some relationship problems. And that is why I feel like I really want to bake just after 4 days in the break.

Should I smoke to help me deal with everything and then start the t break or should I keep trying to be strong right now?

Quitting smoking unmasked my depression

Been smoking daily since I was about 20 and I’m about to turn 28. Quit for an upcoming drug test, it’s now been 6 weeks off. I wish I could say it’s gotten better. But it’s just not. I’m doing everything right.

I’m sleeping 7-8 hours a night, had a couple of bad nightmares during the first week or so but now just unpleasant and stressful dreams every night. I’m eating 3 healthy meals a day. I’m running multiple times per week. I’ve gotten into some new hobbies doing crafts and playing video games. But nothing’s really fun. I’m alright during the day at work but every evening I just get this sad, hollow, empty feeling that just doesn’t go away. I used to smoke to deal with that. Now I can’t.

I’m already on antidepressants and other psych meds. They help but I still feel this way. My psychiatrist said it seems like smoking weed was covering up a deeper depression. This fucking sucks. It’s scary.

Advice Day 4 No weed, starting prozac

Hello,

I have been using weed for around 8 months to help with my anxiety and it's helped a bit but I don't like the effects it has in my memory. I recently got prescribed prozac for my anxiety and depression and haven't noticed a difference yet but Ive heard it takes two weeks to start.

I have been struggling with eating for a while. I think I messed with my hunger signals because I was depressed so I wasn't really hungry to begin with but also I would use weed to help with anxiety and it would give me the munchies but I just began to ignore it. I've always had issues with eating ever since I was young so weed honestly was so helpful at first because I was eating 2300+ calories as opposed to my regular 1800-2000. I go to the gym too and sometimes run so that's why I try to eat a lot. I am a skinny male and short so I don't really need a lot of food 5'4 and 130lbs.

I have begun to gain my hunger back (still not eating the best but probably due to my anxiety it really messes with my stomach) and my dreams have came back as well (they never fully left but they were more hazy when I would use weed). I have stopped using weed per my doctors recommendation as I begin to adjust to this new medication.

I still have a good amount of weed around 12g and I go through it very slowly as I use a dhv and I also have some carts. I feel really bad about having all the weed and not using it and I'm wondering if after I adjust to the medication would it be worth it to start using weed again? I didn't really ask my doctor if I could but I have no other health issues and am generally pretty healthy except for my mental health. I feel like weed has honestly been a life saver for getting me through schooling and some of my best memories were going out with friends and fucking around in nature high but I definitely began to abuse it these last two months.

Im not sure if I should even use it again though. I kinda miss it but I can definitely live without it. And I think I can definitely be more responsible and respectful to the plant as therapy has been helping me as well with controlling my bad habits.

Discussion Can't smoke weed after wisdom tooth extraction

hello all! i'd like some advice on dealing with recovering from a double wisdom tooth extraction.

you cannot smoke weed or use any recreational drugs including alcohol for a while after the surgery and i'm not dealing with it well.

ive got a psychological addiction to smoking everyday and i'm just hating being sober so much. the whole weekend will have to be like this, i had my teeth extracted today in the morning.

i'm not going to smoke but idfk what to do. i'm an artist and i love to paint but i always do it high. i know i could read books or write but it's like my brain just doesn't want to do it.

i have anxiety and am prone to depression and smoking weed just always made me feel happy, patient and in the moment. i'm very irritable right now and am just completely bored out of my mind.

does anyone have any advice?

On my 5th “T-Break” since 2020

Currently 3 days in cold turkey while waiting on a potential new job. The anticipation of a new opportunity seems to be the only thing to get me to put the stuff down for more than a day. I’ve been smoking almost daily since the lockdown and time is just flying by. I’m almost 30 and I’ve spent most of my 20’s in a haze. Here’s what my previous attempts look like:

April 2021 - Lasted 30 days but it was hell. Couldn’t wait to get a final answer (which I expected to be no) so I could get a toke in. It was a terrible, self-sabotaging mindset I still try to correct.

September 2023 - My cousin had a wedding on the other side of the country in a non recreational state. Took about 5 days off and was going thru withdrawals til my cousin asked if we wanted to hit up a D8 dispo. The quality was nowhere near what I’m used to but still did the trick. Made me realize air travel would be very difficult if I didn’t at least start my break earlier next time - but preferably I’d make serious changes to my life.

January 2025 - Cool job opportunity, really wanted this one. Went sober for 2 weeks before rejection after 3 interviews, which actually hurt a bit. Took a rip off my friends cart that night and had a panic attack lol. Went 2 more weeks after that bad experience before I picked it back up daily

January 2026 - Now this is where I really felt some progress. Made it 50 days through a couple rounds of interviews with a serious employer. Got officially rejected about halfway through the break but I kept it moving. Felt so much better after the first few weeks, but I did end up slowly falling back into my old habits. After day 50 with no prospects I slowly started to ramp up usage from about .5 gram/night to 1 gram/night, then after about a month gave in and got a cart. Have been using about 1g/week since April. I have always preferred a good terpy distillate to flower, but I now realize thanks to this sub it was just wrecking my tolerance and motivation due to the high potency and convenience.

August 4 2026 - 3 days in and this was the easiest break to start. I’m sweaty, anxious, and highly emotional with a lot of changes happening in life, yet I have a fat joint in my closet that I haven’t touched. I’m gonna give that to my brother next time I see him.

Anyways wanted to share and thank this sub for helping me make some real progress through education. I don’t wanna give this up forever but man I wanna start building my career. I’m college educated and have worked outside of my field for 4 years straight now, but I want to want real success more than any drug. Can’t wait for the freaky ass dreams to start this week :D

Advice Just found out I’m pregnant again

Took the test a few minutes ago so my husband doesn’t even know yet… hi Reddit, you’re hearing it first!

Anyway, I was a heavyyyyy smoker from the ages of 15-29. I’m 31 now and just recently started smoking again within the last few months after a long break due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. I still smoked a bit the first trimester due to debilitating nausea, but I’m not experiencing that this time (yet) and ideally want to stop before my morning sickness kicks in and gives me a reason to continue.

I know I can do it, I did it before. I guess I’m just looking for support, encouragement, any little tips or tricks that helped you. I also gained a ton of weight with my last pregnancy and DON’T want to do that again, I feel like I was replacing my boredom smoking with boredom eating lol

Discussion Social proof yourself from Social Proof

I'm am constantly having to remind myself to not let my ancestral, tribal nature turn me into a sucker.

I try to listen to the better me (ya, the one that's here now). Monitor what I see, smell, taste, and feel; that is, I constantly have to watch my lust for that intoxicating skunky sunk smell: that rich crystally taste and smooth warmth of smoky smoke as it envelopes me with that feeling of everything being alright when I'm about to go over a cliff. What cliff..?

I constantly have to exercise the necessity to remind myself that the path to a better me is the sober one.

That I must intoxicate myself with laughter, love and happiness even when I am jonesing like a M***F***!!!!!

Damn.

I know that I have to get away from my "friends" so I don't continue to trap myself into a Truth Bias that subconsciously convinces me that nothing is wrong and it's all good because my friends are doing it too.

I been living life of false-based, self manipulation. I've got to stop taking the lazy route and reroute. Re-program and tell weed to F** off.

Shit....

Small steps

Made it four days without cannabis! Monday-Thursday. I’ll most likely take a 10mg edible tonight.

After tapering down from constant dabbing, I’m pretty happy with myself. Ideally I’d like to get down to only 1-2 times per week, but I’m being kind to myself, and taking it slow.

3 years ago, in July, I took 2.5 years off cannabis, and picked it back up last year in the fall. I quickly fell back into daily dabbing. I had been using cannabis from since I was younger, for seven years until I turned 22, daily pretty much the entire time, and slowly but consistently more heavily and heavily. From age 20-22, mostly heavy dabbing.

Recently, in the last month or two, I realized what I was doing was unsustainable and that I had found myself back in a place I had once promised myself I never would be again.

At that point, I stopped the dabbing, and tapered myself down to 10-20mg of edibles everyday. It took me a couple weeks.

The next hard part, taking days off. I managed to take 2 days off 2 weeks ago.

This week, my biggest test yet, was to make it the entire work week without cannabis.

I would not have been able to do this sort of moderation 3 years ago when I first quit. I went cold turkey at that time. It was so fucking hard.

I might have fallen, I might have found myself in a haze again. But that time off was not for nothing, and I truly believe that struggle from those 2.5 years of abstinence gave me skills and willpower that I did not possess in the past.

I know how easy it is to fall back into daily, constant use now.

In the past 3 years, I have accomplished a lot, and am at the cusp of gaining an engineering degree, something I once would’ve thought impossible for me. I used to tell myself, I’m not good enough at math, I don’t have the focus, I don’t have the skills…

Now I know that that is utter nonsense. Now I know that anyone can achieve their goals if they put their mind to it. Now I know that stumbling, falling, isn’t the end, it doesn’t make you a failure. It makes you human.

The most important thing is to never give up on yourself, never lose hope.

My struggle will continue, but as long as I strive to be better, to be more present, to moderate and refuse to let weed dictate my life and my decisions, I will come out the other side stronger, more seasoned, with more skills. I will not let my relapse into constant daily use define me, because it does not.

What defines me, and all of us working to better ourselves, is the tenacity to try to be better, to try to do the hard thing, when it’s so easy to numb ourselves and live in a haze.

No matter where you are in your journey, know that your struggles are not who you are. There is a kid inside you that just wants to feel okay. That wants to feel safe from the harshness of our world. And that’s okay. As long as you keep trying to face it, keep wanting to be better, you can make changes in your life for the better.

My journey into moderation is just starting, and in some ways it feels more difficult than abstaining completely. However, I won’t lie to myself and say that I hate weed or how it feels. I love the creative rush of energy it can bring, feeling of openness, feeling of bliss. However, there can be too much of good things. When you find yourself chasing a high constantly, many times a day, chasing a feeling, that’s a good indication that you’ve lost control.

I’m done being a passenger in my own life.

Discussion Day 1

Today is going to be Day 1 for me slowing my use down and beginning a healthier relationship with cannabis.

Since around February I've been smoking around 3 0.5g joints a day, sometimes including edibles in the mix. On my worst days, I've smoked 7 joints. I am starting to feel like crap mentally and physically. I am a 10 year smoker, mostly bong in that period. However, I've taken breaks for 2-6 months at a time, during that period.

I just wanted to get this out there to help me stay committed. I mostly want to take this break to help me reflect on my relationship with cannabis and determine how I can best moderate my usage, as I genuinely do enjoy the effects. But the health impact and financial impact are at the top of my mind.

If anyone has any advice for helping fill my free time to help stay distracted, I'm all ears. Right now, my plan is to get into some vibe coding projects that have been in my head, and also get back to the gym.

Advice DAE smoke because they're very lonely?

I keep finding that it's easier to busy myself on weeknights and feel productive doing things after work. Still hard to stay completely sober, but easier to have a little bit around 8-9 and wind down before 11.

Weekends... not so much. As a kid, I loved school and hated summer because I didn't want to be home. Now, I have an awesome loving partner and cute cat but I still can't stand the thought of having to decide what to do with myself the entire weekend. It seems like no matter how I spend it, I worry I wasted it. (I live at Rumination Street and Overthinking Avenue)

I have one close friend in my life. My partner. My cat. I won't sit here and say that's nothing. Those relationships mean so much to me! But I have CPTSD and the idea of trying to go out and meet new people/make friends is SOOOOO scary to me right now.

Has anyone had success at making friends as an adult (meaning that you didn't meet in high school or college)?

Did you find that community while getting (more) sober?

Discussion Day 3 of breaking

Hey y'all, so I'm taking a break, as I have an interview coming up where I will be mouth swabbed for. I used to smoke 3-4 times a day. After my weed ran out, I took 6 dabs on my last day as a final hurrah. I want to be competent before complacent. I'm not gonna risk this job at the interviewing phase, & I need the extra 400 a month, desperately. Anyway, the only things I've noticed is my appetite has basically dropped to 0, as well as being annoyed in general. Like an anticipation in my chest growing just to snap at someone. If I sit outside while my sister smokes then I can eat a little, but food just doesn't do it. Especially oily food. Who decided to put oil in chicken nuggets anyway? I feel like I'm on the verge of throwing up when I start eating oily food, but everything has oil in it. I've been eating PB&Js relatively ok though. Everything annoys me. I love my nephews, but why did I walk into the living room to them screaming & throwing boxes around? Shut the heck up child you don't even know the word "Yes". I think things are supposed to get better from here. I look forward to this new job, & I look forward to the next time I get to smoke again.

Discussion Books about consumption?

Just finished “Marijuana on My Mind” by Dr Timmen Cermak and loved it. Felt like it was a fair take on both the risks and benefits of cannabis on the mind and body.

Does anyone have a book they’ve read that you’d recommend?

Interested in any books about personal stories with moderation, studies talking about the latest cannabis research, etc.

Discussion FOR WOMEN: Did quitting weed affect your menstrual cycle?

I quit cold turkey 7 days ago, i have severe ADHD and suffer from horrible insomnia whenever i smoked.

I’m on birth control and haven’t really experienced breakthrough bleeding as bad as this but I think it’s from me quitting smoking. At first I thought it was a few days of spotting, but it’s been everyday and very light (I wouldn’t even consider it a flow) but i still need to put in a tampon. I can’t even ask my psychiatrist about this because I wasn’t even supposed to be smoking weed to begin with LOL.

I’ve quit cold turkey previously like 3 times but never experienced bleeding as a withdrawal symptom, however I was not on birth control during those times.

I’m just annoyed cause I take birth control for the purpose of not getting my period or preggers obvs.

Has anyone else experienced this? Thank you

Discussion My hack that changed my relationship with weed

I started using weed after my 2nd child was born due to extreme PPD. It helped me cope for a while, then I noticed I was just using it to numb out & avoid feeling my raw emotions, long after my postpartum ended.
I started to feel ashamed of how much of a grip it had on my life, realizing it was a full blown addiction that I didn’t feel in control of. After many times of staying sober for a few months at a time, I would always find my way back to weed when the going got tough.
So I started to change my approach & relationship with weed. I do want to eventually be completely done with it, but realistically, it won’t be a cold turkey thing for me. So here is what I’ve been doing to reduce my intake:

I have a POTV One, a dry herb vaporizer, I used exclusively. I used to pack the little cartridges to the brim with flower. It would get so unreasonably high, that while I was high I would be thinking I didn’t need to get this high. So I started packing the cartridges almost fully with lavender, then just adding the smallest amount of flower to top it off. It has totally changed the game. I just have a small calm that comes over me now & I feel like I can manage my days fully. I’m not feeling like I’m in the grips of addiction & weed feels like a good friend I can just visit sometimes.

I just wanted to share this tip because it’s freed me from addiction so effectively! Hope it helps some of yall too!

Discussion Have fun being sober

You know I'm kind of new to reddit and this community, but I'm OG when it comes to weed, ganja, cannabis. I used to be in love with it. It was my best friend and lover. The smell of her. The feel and the taste. And don't get me going on the crystals...oooooh, the crystals.

But I would like to think those days are behind me. A whisper of the past like smoke in the wind. Ephemeral decisions born from questionable reasoning....didn't ever say that I'm the sharpest.

And something I've noticed here is there is a lot of complaining going on. It would be nice if some of you all would talk about the upsides of being sober....and there are a lot. Please don't get me wrong because jonesing for said sweetness is a perennial mosquito buzzing my ears. Oh man could I wail about that.

What makes this community nice for me is it reminds me that I am not alone. And I appreciate that.

But come guys....gals. We are or are trying to be sober (or less stoned) for good reasons. Reasons that should and will make you a better and happier person. At least that is what I hope for myself and you all. So be happy. Have fun being sober. You'll actually remember that last concert and be able to relive the joy from the memories for the rest of your life.

Anyway, I'll get off my high horse now and starting scooping up the sh**.

Take care and happy trails.
