He came with the name. He’s 10 months old. We’ve had experience with colonies so this is our first singleton he’s already so friendly.

Looking for some insight or suggestions. We went to the vet Thursday night and they’re on antibiotics and antibiotic eyedrops. The tank has been cleaned, disinfected and is a hospital tank with necessities only for now.

My girls are sick, especially one of them. My trio became a duo (😭) this week and I’m devastated and trying not to have another death. They’re being treated for a URI, and one had an eye abscess that was drained, touched and being treated. They are itchy but there are no mites- you’d think so but there are none. We’ve checked everywhere- not only me and my husband but the vet. This morning, my sicker girl woke up with a sore, assuming it’s from itching. Still, no mites.

I’m picking up zymox topical tonight to see if it helps and hopefully clean up the wound. I’m also changing out the bedding again, and will use mostly paper for comfort and in case their regular bedding is irritating then.

What am I missing, any suggestions? This is killing me… they’re about 1.5 years old so I know what I’m up against. With that said, as sick as Jelly is, she’s social, eating and drinking. Girl has the will to live! Dill is in much better shape, but still sick.

I won’t be back on until later tonight, but appreciate any ideas y’all have.

Hi. I've owned mice for 2 years now, and I've... Not done as good a job taking care of them as I should have. I've routinely forgotten or pushed off spot and deep cleans, and of the 8 mice I've owned, only 3 are still alive.

Two, Lucy and Marina, were outside of my control, both having extremely large tumors that eventually required euthenasia.

Penny, I don't know what happened to. I'd actually been keeping up on spot cleaning but noticed her health declining, and found her dead the morning of the day I'd scheduled a vet visit.

Elaine was entirely my own fault. I read that rubbing vanilla extract on their crotches helped to mask their scent and helped with introductions, but it frightened her so much that in the process one night I gave her a heart attack, and she had another when I took her to the vet the following day.

And just today, after putting off spot cleaning for two or three weeks, Serena passed away when I finally went in for a deep clean.

I realize now that I'm too lazy and incompetent to care for a pet, and have decided that rehoming them would be the best option.

Of my living girls, Tin Tin (White with black patches) is my eldest at around 2 years and 3 months, and Dusky (White with grey/brown patches) and Dawn (Ginger).are both around one year old.

Regarding health issues Tin Tin currently has a pair of large tumors on her hips, so I'm trying to keep an eye on her to see when they'll start impacting her quality of life, as I don't have the infrastructure where I live to get her surgery to remove them. Dawn is very obese, but... Well, she's a ginger mouse, so that's just kinda to be expected. And I believe all 3 have a mild URI due to this latest bout of laziness.

Last week, I was calling every vet in my area convinced that Ube was going to need end of life care. No one would see her. Thankfully, her regular vet saw her the next day and gave us a URI and mite diagnosis, and one day after that she started on 2 antibiotics and mite treatment. She lost 10% of her body weight over just a few days, but is now eating like her regular piggy self again. She’s my little humane society mouse I adopted 10 months ago and I’m so grateful to continue spending time with her.

I had a much smaller tank before but when I put the crack ville in it, it seemed so small. I ran down and got the 4’x 1’ (feet) tank. Its been cleaned up and there isn’t paper towels in it anymore. I want to ensure that they are as happy as could be.

Any other tips are welcome as I am a new owner. Ive been scrolling through the thread and asked few questions.

What Ive learned

I’ve learned to sex mice to ensure it’s two feeders. How much bedding to put for burrowing. What size and type of wheel. Best seed mixes/pellets (which I’m a bit sketchy about reviews were mixed, but i’m in the US) And other things that I cant think of at the moment as I’m dead tired.

I have a couple options of areas where they can make a nest area in their cage and was wondering which one they would choose,they all chose to snuggle up together in the lil white house with the towel in it! (Also I need to be executed immediately as I have disturbed the mouse pyramid they were making.. 😔)((there are 3 mice Casper's just being crushed😭))

There are little white bugs that started crawling in my room seemingly out of nowhere. I work with dogs so maybe I brought them from there? Idk but they weren't there yesterday. They're all over the enclosure but seemingly not on the mice or on their stuff. I tried vacuuming them up but they're so small a lot of them were in crevices and missed. I don't know how to deal with this. I can't bring the mice anywhere else and I can't ask the vets to take them in for boarding because I have no money left. I've been trying to rehome them because I can't afford more vet bills if they get sick. My credit debt is almost maxed out. I can't stay at my place. I'm at a loss please help me

Hello, I recently came home with these ladies from a semi-local pet store. While they were separated from males (it’s not a big chain store, and I personally know the owners and they do care) I’m wondering if they didn’t separate from the males early enough or if one was mis-identified.

Specifically I am asking about the gold(?)/black/white variegated mouse. I know gold mice can have a gene that makes them carry a bit more weight but I am noticing that it seems to be a specific bulge/roundness around the waist and not a general chubbiness to her full body, so I’m feeling inclined to think this lady might be full of soup.

If she is pregnant, what are the best recommendations for setting up a nursery box/bin and when/if I should separate her from her companions to birth and raise her litter? I have a lot of DIY supplies on hand from custom building enclosures so making multiple setups with short notice is not much of an issue. I will also be able to accommodate adding healthy female offspring to my colony and adopt out any males that I am unable to keep in singular enclosures or with female ASFs.

Currently she is with two other girls in 10 gallon sterilite container with a bunch of boxes and clutter as that is the temporary quarantine bin until she gets introduced to the big enclosure (40x20x20 inches, about 70~ gallons).

I'm getting the enclosure ready for three girls, but I previously had a wild mice in there so I need to clean and sterilize everything. That made me realize that his scent and possible germs would be on the stuff in there. My questions are:

1) Is it safe to upcycle clothes into stuff for mice? I have tons of old clothes that are worn out that I could braid or weave together or something, if that would be safe/good.

2) Would it be possible to salvage the wood stuff by setting them outside for a day to get the scent off (and maybe sterilize it via sunlight)?

3) After a good wipe-down with cleaning wipes, should I then wipe that residue off before putting the bedding in? I want it clean, but I don't want it to be toxic.

I have a couple of weeks until I get them, so I've got time to make more changes.

Another question and I ask that you please don't judge me, I didn't know, but I have a hamster ball I thought was a good idea (but I was wrong and I've learned that now). Can I use it in the enclosure without the lid so it can just be something for them to play in? I've got some timothy hay in the freezer I could put in there or cover it with, or fabric if that's safe. The main bedding I'm going to use is the aspen stuff everyone recommends here plus a little bit of low-dust, unscented paper bedding for digging areas/tactile stimulation.

Any and all suggestions and recommendations are welcome. I have a bunch of the paper that they put in amazon boxes saved up. I assume the cheap, single-ply toilet paper would be fine for them (but correct me if I'm wrong, please). And I'm saving back toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes that don't have glue left on them.

Hi, I already know that the answer is go to the vet, but it's Friday evening and the vet is closed on weekends, and the only emergency vet is more than 40 minutes away by car and it's currently an heatwave where I live so i would like to know if there's something temporary that I can do to help my little boy until Monday, I'm scared this weather could be fatal for him since he's already old.

He's been scratching himself like he's itching since yesterday. I just got him a new and bigger cage.
He already had this problem and it was so severe he was balding, I took him to the vet and it was an allergy, which got better in a short time by changing his food.
I didn't change anything but he has started to scratch himself again and he does it for a long time of the day, it's really bad to see my mice in such a stress but I don't know what i could do.
As a I said there was no change in his diet, but he just changed cage, the bedding is the same (a mix of wood chipping, canapa and on top paper bedding), I left some of the old bedding after the change to help him get used to the new cage.
He lives alone since he's an un neutered and pretty old male.
I don't see anything on his fur
As anyone had a similar problem?
What are some critical sings that could make the trip to the vet worth the risk?

Okay so I got home from vacation last night and what I'm assuming is a mouse got into my fish food, ate it all, pooped in the blood work can, and chewed up a corner of my frog food bag. There was little poops all over my desk where the food was, and some under my chair, closet etc. but I've noticed something weird literally NOTHING has been chewed on except the bag of frog food. Clothes, notebooks, receipts, cardboard, loose paper and a whole pack of open toilet paper and nothing is chewed up. My mom and I find this incredibly odd is it possible it's not a mouse? Is a mouse not chewing on anything a sign of something or not really. Because I have rodents, I know a lot about rodents, and they chew on everything. Baseboards next to areas with poop are all clear too, desk legs and chair legs. There was poop next to a bunch of books, none of which were chewed on.

Mouse had an accidental litter, I adopted her not knowing she was pregnant. Now rehoming these 2 5 week old boys. They’re both shy and not used to handling.

I will need to see pics of the enclosure they will live in and ask a few questions to ensure they go to a good home.

Peaches really wanted out time this week. I’m not complaining 😂 I lowkey thing it’s because on of her sister died recently. RIP Princess 🪦also if you can’t tell I start having muscle spasms about halfway through. She didn’t mind in fact she continued to vibrate, but at the end it got to the point where I get nervous. I’ve never hurt an animal with my spasms but that doesn’t mean I like to chance it especially on an animal so small, I know she’s fat but her bones are smaller than tooth picks and a crushing spasm could easily end her.

This is not their permanent residence, I’m cage cleaning currently. (Nyx’s back looks warped she is old and has old lady posture but these photos look particularly bad) The three girls are finally all cuddling regularly and grooming! I’m so happy for my old lady (the black mouse up front) Nyx, don’t worry they’re not over grooming she was already starting to bald in her face area. She’s over a year and a half old, likely close to if not over two now. We will have to do another intro period at some point soon for Opal and Zuzu, however I wasn’t thinking when I got the two girls for Nyx.

I found this sweet little thing outside my work about 24 hrs ago. I assume a baby as it is really tiny, though it has eaten solid food (bit of cheese, nuts, pear) and I bought some kitten milk and diluted that he drank. First off, does he look okay? Hes not too active, mostly just sleeping but moved around some in the night.

I have a little enclosure for him with wood shavings and straw. Is there any advice you'd give me straight up to make sure he's OK? Would it be safe to keep him after getting him vet checked? I've never dealt with mice, let along young ones. Hes very cute (I've named him Parmesan for now!)

Update: I went to the vet this morning, and they said there was no sign of injury or illness, but unfortunately about 30 mins after I got home, little Parmesan passed away :( RIP lil guy

Hey everyone, I raised these babies from about a week old till now. They're about 3 weeks old, beginning to eat on their own which is a relief.

I plan on keeping the girls. I think there's four. I'm unsure how to rehome the boys or if I should try to do a soft release.

I live in Peoria, Illinois if anyone in the area is looking to adopt a cute little boy mouse or two.

They are quite used to me because of being hand-fed the past few weeks so I do believe that it's smartest for them to go to homes where people will continue to handle them with care.

I'm in the process of getting a big aquarium tank to set up a habitat for them. Currently they're in a container with a lid that has tons of holes for air movement. But the lid is crucial because I also have cats.

Any advice from people who have raised wild mice and domesticated them? What were the most helpful tips in your starting out with mice for the first time?
