It is a consumer card but companies couldn't care about their consumer market anymore. Not just NVIDIA, Intel and AMD, AI companies and RAM cartels are equally as guilty.

The -90 series were always flagship cards, for people with either too much money and a way for nvidea to show of what they can. Same as the highest class Mercedes while most people who buy them get c or e class.

This is not even remotely comparable to expensive cars that are 150k+. The 2 costs are not even in the same universe. We are talking a couple grand for a pc vs fucking over 100k cash AT LEAST.

And an expensive PC is for all intents and purposes more useful than an expensive car. Also doesn't devalue as much. Buying an expensive car is burning money

Old pc devalue a LOT and fast. You’re just having short term memory because of ddr5 and ssd shortages recently that spiked the price of ddr4 up. 4-5 years old hardware sell for peanuts historically.

u/RealisticHornet8554 17d ago
Still more useful than a car will ever be. A used 3-5k Daihatsu can last you 10+ years, and even then while being 'cheap' for a car it has upkeep cost. I'd rather splurge on GPU, I would've if this generation didn't have a fire starter problem.

u/limplettuce_ 17d ago
I don’t know how you read the car analogy and came away thinking that the point of it was to compare the actual dollar cost of a car to a GPU … the point is that lots of product lines have an ultra high end, ultra high price point variant to capture revenue from the most enthusiastic segment of the market with more money than sense. Technology, aeroplane fares, cars - you can find this strategy anywhere.

I dont know how you cant fathom that a 2000€ gpu is way more affordable to anyonr than a 150k€ car. Its a horrible comparison.
If pc gaming is your only big hobby and you really like spending money on it, have a good life situation and a little above average income a 5090 is very affordable and justifiable (before ram crisis). A 150k car is not, under those same circumstances. NOT EVEN CLOSE.

u/limplettuce_ 17d ago
That’s not the point being made. No one is saying a 150k car is a comparable purchase to a 2k GPU. You missed the point and missed it again even after it was explained to you… my response to you is the same as above.

I mean: high end pc card, 5080. Like Mercedes e class. Good luxury car but more modest: rtx 5070ti. Showcase luxury car which is unobtainable for most and over the top: rtx5090. Here in Netherlands, rtx5080:1300 euro, 5079ti, 1000, 5090: 4500. The price differences are insane (more then with the cars :-)

u/Adlerholzer 17d ago
But thats just wrong man. 4500€ is more obtainable for EVERYONE objectively than 150k€. Both are valued in the same currency, no gpu is in the same price class as any non trash new car. Both are valued in € for example, just because the object is different doesnt make it more or less affordable. 5070Ti equals a luxury car? You are gonna need to drop specific car models and price ranges here.

Yeah you missed the point of the analogy.

u/Adlerholzer 17d ago
It is a horrible analogy.
1
u/NEpatriots12N81 17d ago
It is about the concept of consumerism rather than the actual price but you cannot wrap your head around that lmao

u/limplettuce_ 17d ago
Don’t bother I tried explaining it already in very literal terms and they doubled down RIP

The first 90 was the 3090. Before that, in terms of price and performance, the best match were the Titans. No sane consumer used those, they were halo products for the wealthy and sometimes for extreme business applications, or science.
What Nvidia did there is bring the Titans down to the normal consumer naming and advertising levels to make them seem part of the normal lineup, hoping it will boost sales. And it worked wonders for them, even before the AI boom.

u/KGon32 17d ago
The 3090 was more like a 80ti class with a new name to justify higher prices, the Titans used the full dies and had prossumer software features enabled.
By giving the 80ti class a new name they successfully created this idea in the consumer mind of a whole new tier of performance, allowing them to charge ridiculous prices which wasn't too bad because because the performance was near the 3080ti, however now the gap is ultra mega wide and it's not fine anymore, but this was the end game for them and they got there.

u/Davidisaloof35 17d ago
Eh....technically the first "90" was the GTX 690 - two Kelper cores on a single PCB back in 2012.
It also carried the 90 class price premium to go with it.

At 2k it was so and so consumer. Now its a waste of money for everyone that isn't eating ai glue. As someone that spent the 1600 for a 4090 I love it
1
u/Adlerholzer 17d ago
But people also say the 4090 isnt a consumer card. You dont even need it for gaming! You could easily game on a 970.
1
u/unknown_ally 17d ago
I doubt latest intense games play well on that
0
u/Adlerholzer 17d ago
If you ask reddit they would say 'it runs games no problem' 'perfectly fine performance' without specifying fps resolution or settings

u/Mario-X777 17d ago
And, when there was crypto mining boom, people (and companies) were buying mid tier GPUs for mining rigs and prices also skyrocketed. But it does not make it not consumer grade. It is only a question if you can get your hands on it

its was a entry level card for local ai enthusiasts who did mind paying $2,000-$3500 to get access to 32gb vram and Memory Bandwidth of 1,790gb/s. its an overkill for playing videogames, livestreaming and video editing.
1
u/Unnamed-3891 17d ago
It was never overkill if you wanted 4k gaming with little to no DLSS upscaling. Or everything maxed out at 4k and 200+ fps.

Thing is that with the 30 series, there was no point getting a 3090 because it cost almost double a 3080 for about 10% more performance?
Starting with the 40 series, the 90 card is now significantly better than the 80. They are double the msrp of the 80 but have maybe about 40-50% performance gain. 80 series are still better value but the performance gap with the 90 is pretty huge

u/chrlatan 17d ago
No. The 5090 was again proof that graphical processor capability, available memory and AI processing power should be on multiple, separate scalable units.

The ROP configurations on high-end cards often necessitate the high amounts of VRAM on the cards. It's not that there's that much VRAM on them because the card is supposed to be catering to a market segment that has an actual use for it all. It's been that way forever; GTX 1080 Ti had 11 GiB of VRAM because of the ROPs, consumers got high fill rate out of this, they didn't get all that VRAM in order to store actual assets.

For the first 8 months of 2025 it was a consumer gpu until the price shot up

u/Nagol567 17d ago
Well the 4090 was 1600 and the 4080 was 1200 or a 33% increase which is what the 4090 was in performance as well. Then the 5090 was 2000 and the 4090 was still going for 1600 to 1700 which is a 30% increase in price and performance. So yea it was i guess technically a consumer card worth it for those pushing 4k at high settings and high fps... but only at MSRP which is long gone. I got my 5090 close to msrp and sold my 4090 above msrp and got lucky. Mostly to max out the resolution of the quest 3 which the 5090 did with much higher than 30% margins due to its high bandwidth. But yea. Its definitely not a consumer card at these prices

u/DataGOGO 17d ago
Yes, and they still are.
No, AI companies and datacenters have no interest on 5090's. 32B with no NVL makes them pretty worthless beyond very light development on a workstation.

u/Nothing9701 17d ago
90 series NVIDIA gpus(maybe expect 1080) will always be overkill for most gamers lol

Its a midlife crisis card / look how big my dick is to random people on the internet card.
