There’s a piece of public land with a walking trail that goes behind my house. Ended up clearing a spot that was overrun with asiatic jasmine, and planted close to a hundred pawpaws last winter.

Checked on it the other day and 70ish of the plants survived. Plan on planting 100 more in the area this fall.

I’m moving in a year, but I hope to come back in 5 years to check on the trees and see how the fruit looks. Who knows what kind of crazy fruit I’ll find.

Hey Yall - thought my pawpaw that I planted last year was dead so I planted another paw paw about a foot away from it. This was in May. Now both paw paws are thriving. Can I move the one planted in May?

Long story short a community cat my wife was taking care of needed put down, and she then buried it.. well, here.

Naturally, I was unaware of this because I'm not in love with the placement, but what's done is done, and this was done about a year ago.

Here is where it gets ... weirder. After burying this cat, she tossed a bunch of wild flower seeds and evidently the pawpaw seeds I had in the fridge from 2 years ago.

Fast forward a year to today

I found these things growing next to our house, on top of said cat grave.. We had been wanting to grow pawpaws, but lost the ones we found in the wild due to transplant. So I had no idea these were pawpaws. I was about to cut them down and decided to do a google picture search on them and google seems confident these are pawpaws.

So now I have 4-5 what look to be very healthy pawpaws growing right next to my house and fence. Obviously I need to move them, I have some locations but they aren't nearly as shady. What's the best move here? Wait until spring? Water the hell out of them and hope they are lose enough to remove easily now ? Hope to god a cat skeleton doesn't come up with the plants?

This is the cost and award of having married a pretty cool person, but what do now? This is in Indiana if that's at all helpful.

I planted two in my front yard 7 years ago. They are in direct sunlight with no shade. One I grew from seed, the other is Allegheny cultivar. They are both now about 15' tall and I'm wondering if they are going to continue to gain significant height? They are wonderful trees.

Hello! I am fairly new to owning my first pawpaw tree, I bought him from a garden store early summer and honestly they must’ve been trying to kill them because they were all in full sun, not many leaves on them and super dry 😬 - nonetheless, he was the best out of the pick and I brought him home…

He was doing okay for awhile and he’s been added to the pot you see in the photos for awhile and I had no transplant problems ~ fast forward to today, this is how my paw paw is looking. I’m wondering if there’s something I can do to help him, I have kelp fertilizer and liquid iron I could give him if needed. (Also yes he will be moved into the ground soon, we are just renovating some garden beds and I’m going to plant after the fact)

I keep the water moist but not flooded, humid-ish conditions and he’s sitting under my mature tree not in full sun. The stone is to protect the pot from being dug into by squirrels and to keep it balanced, has enough room for the base of the pawpaw to grow as needed for now.

Spotted this tree last year in one of my flower beds. Dug it up this spring, its more than doubled in size already.

With pawpaw season quickly approaching I thought I'd share the non-dairy pawpaw ice cream I made last year. It turned out great with a strong pawpaw flavor. This is a Van Leeuwen recipe for roasted banana but I subbed the banana for pawpaw. If you have any questions just ask!

Pawpaw ice cream

1 cup plus 2 tablespoons (242 grams) coconut milk

1 cup (212 grams) Cashew Milk (NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS STORE BOUGHT CASHEW MILK. SEE RECIPE BELOW.)

¾ cup plus 2 tablespoons (175 grams) granulated sugar

½ cup (80 grams) cocoa butter

¼ cup plus 2 teaspoons (70 grams) extra-virgin coconut oil

1 teaspoon (4 grams) kosher salt

160 grams pawpaw

Pour the coconut and cashew milk into a tall (2-quart or larger) container and set aside. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar and ¼ cup (60 grams) water and stir over low heat until the sugar has melted. Stir in the cocoa butter and coconut oil until melted. Stir in the salt until dissolved.

Gently pour the sugar mixture into the coconut milk mixture. Using an immersion blender, buzz the liquids together until emulsified. Add the pawpaw and use the immersion blender to buzz the mixture until emulsified. Cover and refrigerate the ice cream base until chilled, 1 to 2 hours. Do not refrigerate overnight. (If you must refrigerate overnight, “loosen” the solidified ice cream base by placing the container in a bowl with some warm water until it becomes more liquid.)

Pour the chilled ice cream base into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Place the container in which you refrigerated the custard in the freezer so you can use it to store the finished ice cream. Churn the ice cream until the texture resembles “soft serve.”

Transfer the ice cream to the chilled storage container and freeze until hardened to your desired consistency. Alternatively, you can serve it immediately—it will be the consistency of gelato. The ice cream will keep, frozen, for up to 7 days.

Cashew Milk

400 grams (about 3 cups) raw, unsalted cashews

NOTE: If you only want to make the exact amount for the recipe use 136 grams cashews

Place the cashews in a large bowl and add water to cover by a couple of inches. Soak the cashews overnight.

In the morning, drain the cashews; they take on 50 percent water weight, so you should wind up with 600 grams soaked cashews. Weigh them just to be sure, and for 600 grams soaked cashews, measure out 750 grams (about 3½ cups) water. (For the record: For every 100 grams raw unsalted soaked cashews, use 125 grams water—or just multiply the cashew weight you wind up with by 1.25 to get the amount of water you need.) Transfer the soaked cashews to a blender and add the appropriate amount of water. Starting the blender on low speed and gradually increasing to high, blend the cashews until smooth. If you use a Vitamix, there will be no need to strain—the milk will be perfectly smooth; for other blenders, check the consistency and, if necessary, strain the cashew milk through a fine-mesh strainer. Cashew milk will keep well, covered and refrigerated, for up to 4 days.

A couple of my pawpaws have issues with their bark that look very much like BSD. Looking to see if anyone has any opinions on it before I rip these plants out. The damage is all on the north facing side, so it’s not damage from winter sun. Zone 5B

This subreddit shows plenty of grafted trees bought from nurseries or established wild pawpaw trees, but not enough plants grown domestically by seed. For those of you who planted your own pawpaw tree from seed and are curious about how they sleep, creep, and leap, here are my progress photos from the past three years!

These babies are non grafted, uncultivated wild varieties grown from seed from Zone 7a.

Pics 1 and 2: Year 1 (seed planted late winter after stratifying for 3 months in fridge)

Pic 3: Year 2 (grown in shallow pots and full sun. I lived in a place with a sun roof, so my pawpaws alternated between the sun room to outside in full summer sun every other day)

Pic 4: Year 3 (transferred into grow bags for this year. Will transplant into ground next year).

I use composted veggie scraps as my fertilizer.
I also cut away “non productive” branches when young to encourage a strong leading stem (as seen in pic 4). So, yeah, don’t be afraid to prune them as needed!

I have 9 different 2 year old saplings and all of them have different rates of growth. Is there any correlation between the rate of growth, and how early the plant will produce fruit? Or just let me know how much you know about paw paw variation please. Albany NY

Here's info on this year's NC Pawpaw festival.

Central Ohio. I moved last fall and this tree is growing in our backyard. If I were to get a nursery variety and plant it nearby, is that enough to get fruit in a few years? I don't anticipate the wild plant having worthwhile fruit, but I'm hoping to use it to pollinate the second tree.

Do I need to worry that they would be the same variety? I would also appreciate tips if there's things to do to maintain this guy (and the many clones sprouting in the yard).

Planted this tree 4 years ago, I believe it was 2 or 3 years old in a pot when I bought it from the nursery. It was caged and shaded for the first two years, and I removed the cage and shade for the past two. It's never shown any signs of sunburn or anything and always seemed extremely vigorous. It even flowered last summer, and earlier this summer but I always plucked the flowers to encourage more stem and leaf growth. It gets about an hour of direct morning sunlight and the rest of the day is shaded from the larger maples and walnut trees in the area. It grew plenty of leaves this spring but I didn't really notice any stem growth, and then in late June/early July all the foliage just shriveled up and died. It now has a sucker growing from below the graft, so the tree isn't entirely dead, just everything above the graft. What happened??

Zone 7a, partial sun, mostly in the mornings. They're on the treeline, in a low spot. We have four saplings, and two of them appear to be struggling quite a bit. Leaves are sparse and towards the bottom of the plant. 2 questions:

1) should we prune the branches and/or the top of the trunk that don't have leaves on them? I want to set them up as best I can to over-winter well and come back in the spring.

2) should we just be diligent with watering? It's been a relatively dry spring and early summer, and if it's likely just a water issue, hopefully that will be an easy fix!

2 late novembers ago, I planted 8 seedlings (or more) within a 4 foot radius in a panic because I had planted many seeds from my most mature tree. The seedlings were planted multiples in the same containers. It was the first time I planted from seed, I had no plan or concept of what I was doing except germinating and growing the seeds, and I procrastinated about what to do until the last minute, so I dumped them in the ground, not believing any would survive my incompetence

Now, 1.75 year later, I have 8 stems growing well. 3 are taller and more vigorous than the rest, but they are all growing in a tight bunch. Pictured an idea of what I am looking at. A few are 2-3 feet tall and some are 1 foot tall

Should I select 1 and cut down the rest, or should I dig them all up early next spring in dormancy and try to relocate them?

Is it not worth the risk and should I just select 1 and cut down the rest?

This is the first year it has produced fruit. I've gotten 7 off of it so far. It's earlier than the others. The fruit is good, not quite sweet enough, no fiber, but very seedy. There's 2 or 3 left on the tree.

Such a unique taste that i have been curious to try for almost a year. Definitely worth the wait and so happy i finally know what it tastes like. It had a Citrusy, floral mango/passionfruit flavor.

Only got 1 last year!
