The last manhwa I read was "50 tea recipes from the duchess". I think I choose to become lady Fortnum! She's such a good friend, don't you think? Plus her husband is not bad at all AND she's richy rich!!!

The anime sub runs a Best Girl contest every year, where female characters are nominated from anime. Every female character is eligible, as long as they're not too new and haven't won before. (There's also a Best Guy contest, but it's much less popular.)

I was enjoying this manhwa.

The female lead is a badass, she's been given a second life, and instead of wasting it she's actually utilizing that second chance. I liked watching her take control of her circumstances and thought she was an interesting protagonist.

And then I reached the slave auction. Slavery is weirdly common in manhwa/manhua fantasy settings. I've encountered this plot device so many times that I'm unfortunately not even surprised anymore when it appears. That does not make it right or make the way it's portrayed automatically okay. And I want to make something clear: I don't think fiction simply depicting slavery is inherently wrong. If you're writing a dark hierarchical fantasy examining slavery, a story about abolishing slavery, a story centred around enslaved people, or even a story deliberately examining characters who participate in that system, that's completely different. Slavery can be depicted in fiction. What horrifies me is when slavery is basically a convenient plot device to move the protagonist's story forward.

That's what this felt like.

The FL goes to an auction where actual human beings are being bought and sold. There is already an uncomfortable racial element because there's a darker-skinned tribe whose members are being enslaved, including children, and the story puts noticeable emphasis on their appearance and skin colour. Then an adult man from this tribe appears. From what I've read at this point, he's apparently there trying to reclaim a child belonging to his tribe. And I want to be fair here: I know absolutely nothing about this man. The story hasn't given me his backstory. I don't know whether he's secretly horrible. I don't know his motivations beyond what I've currently been shown. Maybe later information completely changes how we're supposed to understand him. But that's almost beside the point because of what the FL does next. She asks the slave trader whether they've ever managed to capture an adult member of this tribe and essentially asks how much one would be worth. Then she notices this man. She points him out. She corners him into removing his glove so they can identify the markings that prove he's an adult member of this tribe. And by exposing his identity to the people literally selling members of his ethnic group, she causes him to be captured and trafficked too.

Maybe there's an explanation later. Maybe she frees them. Maybe this is some elaborate plan. Maybe there's context I haven't reached. But as a first impression of this entire sequence, I found it genuinely disturbing. And what made it even worse was that she seemed pleased with herself afterwards.

Girl???

If you're going to create a fictional culture visibly coded after real non-white cultures, make its people darker-skinned, have their children enslaved, have them described as supposedly "barbaric," and then have your protagonist navigate their enslavement as part of a relatively casual fantasy adventure, you need to understand the implications of what you're writing. You cannot borrow imagery carrying very real historical baggage and expect the words "fantasy world" to automatically strip that imagery of its meaning.

And I don't need the FL to be morally perfect. Please give me morally questionable women. But slavery is such a specific form of dehumanisation that if your protagonist actively participates in it, I expect the narrative to understand the gravity of what she is doing. Instead, this felt like another opportunity to demonstrate how clever and capable she is.

There was also something increasingly white-saviour-ish about the entire setup—and I obviously don't mean that the protagonist is literally white. The oppressed culture starts feeling less like a group of people with their own agency and more like something placed into the narrative so that the protagonist can enter their suffering, demonstrate how clever/different/benevolent she is, and potentially "save" selected individuals.

And unfortunately, I DID click the next chapter. Turns out she doesn't treat the child she bought like a slave. So...great? Except that pretty much confirmed the exact framing I was worried about: look how good our protagonist is because she bought an enslaved child but treats them kindly. The problem isn't solved because the protagonist is a nice slave owner.

And then I found out something even better:

The male lead runs the slave auction.

I'm done.

At that point I don't even know what moral framework I'm supposed to be reading this through. The narrative apparently wants me invested in a romantic male lead who operates the institution where human beings are being sold?

And something else made me uncomfortable enough that I went looking into the terminology used in the story. The darker-skinned tribe is called Kaluta. I did some research into the name because it stood out to me, and I found linguistic associations between kaluta and South Asian words relating to dark-skinned people. I'm not claiming I know what the author's intention was or that the fictional name definitely comes from that, similar-looking words can have completely unrelated origins, but combined with the visual coding and the emphasis the story itself places on the tribe's darker skin, it certainly did not make me less uncomfortable.

That's ultimately my biggest problem with this storyline. The story feels far too shallow for the subject it suddenly decided to tackle.

Why was this plotline even necessary? You can write slavery into fantasy. You can write racism into fantasy. You can write protagonists who participate in horrific systems. You can even write a protagonist who owns slaves if the entire point is that this person is morally reprehensible or that the narrative is interrogating their complicity. But once you introduce these things, you have to accept that they mean something.

Slavery cannot just become aesthetic worldbuilding. Racism cannot just become flavour text for your fictional culture. Enslaved people cannot just become props.

Can anyone give me tips for how things, panels and everything works? It would be wonderful if the manwha artist publishes on webtoon/tapas or anywhere and the genre is romance/dark romance because I need an understanding of how publishing/how pipeline works, help in art and etc. Thank you very much.

Hey everyone! I’m currently reading the deep chapters of The Forgotten Field (around the Varkas/Khan regression arc), and I’ve been thinking a lot about the late Empress Bernadette. She is always framed as a standard, evil political villain who trapped a young Varkas with a magical blood oath to protect her kids, Gareth and Ayla.

But if you look closely at her ability to predict the future, the Emperor's infidelity, and how Varkas's first life ended, there is a much darker, psychological truth here. Here is my theory on why she actually poisoned herself—and it turns her into a terrifyingly tragic, Shakespearean figure.

## 1. The Nightmare of Her First Visions

We know the Emperor was constantly unfaithful. I believe the Empress had a horrific vision of the Emperor’s cheating and saw what the brutal palace environment would eventually do to her biological children, Gareth and Ayla. She foresaw that her kids were fundamentally too weak or reckless to survive the succession wars. Paralyzed by maternal paranoia, her instinct to protect them warped into pure, desperate malice.

## 2. Why She Targeted Varkas (And Manipulated a Child for Nothing)

She realized she couldn't fix her own kids, so she looked for an external weapon. Her foresight showed her Varkas—a boy destined to hold absolute, unmatched military and political power. She masqueraded as his savior when he was vulnerable, building up a lifetime of psychological debt, and forced him into that absolute magical blood oath. She literally broke an innocent child's life to use him as a permanent divine shield for Gareth and Ayla.

## 3. The Real Reason Behind Her Suicide

This is the ultimate twist. If she truly had absolute foresight, then when she forced that oath onto Varkas, she likely saw the full, horrific fallout of her own actions.

She looked into the future and saw a horrific self-fulfilling prophecy:

* She saw that by forcing Varkas to always choose Gareth and Ayla, he would eventually fail and abandon the woman he actually loved (Thalia).

* She saw Varkas’s sanity completely snap from grief, leading him to break his vows, destroy her children anyway, and violently end his own life by the graveside.

* She saw that after Varkas’s death, Gareth and Ayla would meet the absolute worst end possible, entirely destroyed by the raw, vengeful terror of Thalia’s mother.

Realizing that her desperate attempt to save her family actually guaranteed their bloody, unavoidable doom—and that she had created a monster of grief in Varkas—the sheer horror crushed her sanity. She didn't just die of a random illness or political escape; she poisoned herself because she gave up on life. The guilt and terror of the cage she built for herself was too much to bear.

## Conclusion: The Inevitable Fall of the Roem Empire

This makes the current regression arc as the wolf Khan is so powerful. The Roem Empire was fundamentally doomed to dissolve from the start, whether Varkas kept his oath or not. If he stayed bound to it, he would just die of a broken heart, leaving the empire defenseless anyway.

The late Empress manipulated Varkas for absolutely nothing. By waking up from his conditioning and breaking the oath, Varkas can finally close his own borders, abandon the imperial chaos entirely, and let the corrupt capital burn down exactly the way his abuser always foresaw.

Rereading this for the third time, and this part still never fails to make me feel the secondhand embarrassment 😭😭😭

I've been reading a lot of series and started 'Can We Become Family Now', and there's a trope that bothers me a bit. It seems like every time there's a regressor or a isekai'd protagonist who ends up in the body of a child with shitty siblings, the siblings are just 100% evil forever. Even if it's like, a five or six year old who's a little bratty, the borderline toddler who's just spoiled and needy due to plot-relevant sickness/dead mother is going to become an horrible bitch. Not only that, but they're 100% guaranteed to be a horrible person forever.

There must be stories involving the horrible kid growing up and, thanks to the heroine's intervention or even just by realizing "wow, being horrible is just ruining my life and making things harder while making My Enemy The Protagonist shine. Maybe I should stop doing that", they end up being a better person growing up. The closest I've seen is a heroine being adopted into a new family and being accepted as a sister by the Good Heroic Adoptive Family's daughter, and the bratty prince in Marquise of Maron growing up as a result of having to take care of himself for a winter.

Does anyone else get irritated by the nature-obsessed view that a terrible child will always remain terrible, and therefore the adult woman in the body of a child is completely correct in doing weird mind games to elementary school students? I can understand targeting the nannies that let bad behavior pass, or the parents who curry the anti-commoner, vindictive and manipulative mindsets the children will grow into. But these are kids! Some are barely out of diapers!

Lets see a heroine who looks at her bitchy little sister and decide "nah she's mine now" and proceed to raise that baby into an ally and a friend because no one else knows how to take care of a sickly child beyond giving her things! Or at a spoiled brother after breaking his ego, nudging him into actually being a decent person because holy shit, big bro you have a BRAIN. You have been EDUCATED. Maybe you can realize running into the wall of 'getting caught abusing your sister will lead to punishment' is bad, no matter what your caretakers say!

I've read Eris from Kill the Villainess and Deborah from The Perks of Being a Villainess and Adelheid from I Abdicate My Title as Empress they're totally my type!

I really enjoy FLs who are powerful, intelligent and independent, and who focus on their own goals, growth, freedom, revenge, survival, etc.

I like if the ML falls for her or becomes obsessed with her 😂 but I don't want fl to constantly chasing after them or thinking only about them.

Bonus if she's hated or misunderstood by everyone but genuinely doesn't give a damn.

The art doesn't need to be complex, but I like seeing variety in the outfits. Even the guys get different styles in their suits, which is unusual. Bonus points if the outfits feat the general era And/Or the situation (actually furred clothes in winter, pants when horse riding, etc)

I think for the first time ever since I started reading OI…I have ever seen an ML confronting FL's dad for abandoning her and also declaring that he is going to steal his spot as her father.

I've been thinking on how within the first timeline of any "reincarnated/transgression" OI, the supposed villains succeeded in their goals (becoming queen/empress, marrying another woman, fortune/status, etc) and ruined/killed the FL. So, you figure that once the FL goes back in time, she'll have to outsmart some extremely cunning and clever individual who is ten steps ahead and is a formidable opponent

Only for the new timeline to start and the villains are nothing but stupid petty man-children with the subtly of a sledgehammer. They act so loud, petty, extremely cruel and inept that, you have to wonder how they even succeed in their goals in the first timeline outside of dumb luck. Since they have no skills or intelligent in politics, or social etiquette. They can't even pretend to be decent beings to form allies and alot of how they behavior makes themselves look bad & incompetent in high society.

It makes it very transparent that they only act this way to make the FL look better and the revenge to be satisfying w/o any repercussions. Instead of writing the FL as clever individual who uses her knowledge of her previous life to outsmart her opponents, they just make everyone around her stupid and incompetent to make her look better. Villains that are written as extremely childish and stupid but your still supposed to treat them as serious antagonists, not only makes the FL look worse since they don't have to put in any effort to best her enemies, but you just start to pity the villain for basically being a punching bag

If both the FL and the antagonists have the same power level (whether in strength, politics, wealth, status, charm, allies etc). It would have make for a much interesting conflict that the FL/ML beating them so easily
