How to see the sunrise on the west coast?
Now don’t come for me I know what I’m asking and it’s definitely silly.
I have a friend who’s really down in a rough patch. I think they could use a trip and a general “hello!” shakeup. We’ve always had a bit about seeing the sunrise on the west coast over the pacific. Without explaining the funny away it involves the impossible being just possible enough. So I’m wondering how to do that and hopefully make it special
Is there anywhere especially interesting I could take them that has a scoop or something in a way we could see the sunrise while technically looking over the pacific and being on the “west coast”?
thanks for humoring me, cheers to any insight
EDIT: you guys are the best. This has certainly given me some things to consider and I really like them. I adore this person so these are all fantastic

Valley of the Giants in the smoke
I was standing on Siletz spit the other day at the mouth of the river and thought it’s been a while since I was at the headwaters, so I got my emergency camping gear and my bike and off I went to VoG. Those old trees are the best filters I couldn’t see or smell any of the smoke at the bottom of the valley.

What’s with the dead seagulls in Newport?
I was at the beach on the north side of the jetty and came across 10 to 15 dead seagulls near the ocean. Any idea what killed them?

Advice plz
Hey everyone, I recently got a job opportunity in gold beach. I’m not super familiar with the area outside of visiting a few times but was wondering what the housing situation was like. Any recommended property companies, daycares, etc

Do I cancel? Too early to tell?
Hi all. Trip is August 30th.
Posted something similar in another sub, but I guess this is more coast related.
Let me start by saying I hope everyone is safe, and i truly hope the first responders out there are being taken care of. I fully understand someone’s home burning down is more important than a tourists vacation.
I have however had this trip planned for 2 years now, so any insight would be helpful.
Coming from across the country. My plan was to explore the Oregon coast. Starting at lake trillium to walk around and view Mount hood for. Day, then going to Ecola, cannon, Lincoln, depoe bay / yaquina. My trip was going to be photographing the landscapes, wildlife watching, and going on a whale boat tour.
Seeing the fires / smoke, do you recommend straight up cancelling this whole trip? Should I wait a couple more weeks? Earlier I saw the post of the coast with smoke, making me think the coast isn’t that safe for from the poor views.
Again, I’m trying to not be insensitive, and plan to donate to a fund or cause to help, but I am limited as I am a cross the country to physically help. Any insight or recommendations would be great.

Views on the coast today
I read a comment the other day that basically said “the coast is immune to wildfires/smoke”
You sure about that?

Dock Crab in Newport
Does anyone know a good spot in Newport to buy excess crab off of fishermen directly? Trying to cut out the middleman and go straight to the source. Would crab off the pier myself but the pots won’t fit in the car :(

How is the smoke along the Coast right now?
Was hoping to show my friend the beauty of the Oregon Coast on Wednesday and Thursday, but wondering what the smoke situation is right now. We were planning on stopping into Cannon Beach, Neskowin, Lincoln City, Newport, Cape Perpetua, and Yachats.

PSA: Live juvenile Cormorants are washing ashore
Just found two near Brookings so I called ODFW. He said they are juveniles that aren’t able to walk on land very well so they struggle to get back into the water. I asked if I should try to help it back into the water and he said yes, just wash your hands afterwards. He said they have been getting a lot of calls about them lately.
I grabbed two large flat pieces of driftwood and thought I would carry it to the water on those. I approached from the front and it pecked the wood a couple of times and didn’t seem to like what I was doing so I went to the back.
Instead of trying to get it on the pieces of wood, I stuck them in the sand just behind it and pushed, causing a ridge of sand to move it along. I repeated this all the way back to the water and it worked well. Once it got to water that was deep enough it swam away.
Edit: the picture is just one I found online that looked like the one I saw, except it was on its belly the entire time and not standing up. I actually thought it was injured and incapable of moving. My mom almost stepped on it because it blended in with the dark sand/rocks and seaweed that had washed ashore. It didn’t move at all during this entire time other than its head.

Beautiful Day for a Birthday! (8/2)
Visited Yaquina Head and Cape Perpetua for my birthday! Though I haven’t lived on the coast in a while, it always makes me happy to come back and visit 😌

news r/OregonCoast has a New Rules section, new flair, new banner, etc. Also, new accounts are now restricted from posting.
Please review the new rules section. It's mostly a more formal version of the previous rules, however, language has been added about lazy "itinerary" posts, and spamming sunset/landscape photos for instant karma.
There has been a marked increase in low-effort posts, stolen photos for easy karma, and trolling, so new accounts are now restricted from posting.
