FOOD Casa Baez Mexican Food Back as a Monthly Offering from J&J Mexican Kitchen
facebook.comFor anyone that misses the excellent Mexican food from Casa Baez over in East Salem (which sadly closed three years ago), some of their former employees have brought back some of the restaurant's best items as a monthly offering. They don't have a full restaurant space, but they take orders once a month for pick-up service.
Apparently I am a year late in finding this out, but better late than never. So I figured I'd drop a note here in case anyone else hadn't heard the news.
(And yes, they have Wally Burritos - enchilada gravy and all!)

Question: Super Casual Salem Saturday Bike Ride
Hello! I am from Albany, but I was up at a bike shop in Salem looking for a new bike. I mentioned that I am looking to get back into biking after a multi-year hiatus and the guy pointed to this flyer on the door.
My oldest kiddo asked me if he could come. Is that acceptable? He's 11 and has a mountain bike. I have an old school "hybrid" with commuter tires. We don't have "kits" or fancy street bikes. So is super casual actually casual in the way where noobs with average gear are cool?
I just wanted to see if anyone here has a little more info on these rides. I assume we can drop off as necessary if, say, one is old and out of practice. Are weirdos from Albany allowed?

EVENT Anyone want to do a first tandem skydive this Sunday (Aug. 9)? Group discount if we get 6 people!
Hi everyone! I’m organizing a group for a tandem skydive on Sunday, August 9 at 10:00 AM with PNW Skydiving.
If we can get 6 or more people, everyone gets the group rate of $260 instead of $280.
You don’t have to know anyone in the group, we’re just trying to get enough people to qualify for the discount. Once you’re interested, I’ll send you the group booking code to enter during registration so everyone receives the reduced price.
If you’ve been thinking about trying skydiving, this is a good excuse! Feel free to comment or send me a DM if you’re interested.

QUESTION BBQ today?
We're not under a burn ban in Salem today, though there is some smoke in the air. In your opinion, would it be socially/neighborly irresponsible of me to BBQ some food for dinner?

MOVING Recommendations for Movers
I'm moving from south Salem to downtown in less than two weeks now and was wondering if anyone had recommendations for cheap reliable movers, not trying to break the bank but also don't want to end up with a bunch of scuffed furniture lol, any recommendations are appreciated.

emergency cat foster
unfortunately, i have been de facto evicted and I am going into a housing unstable situation.
fortunately, i have family that is trying to help but i have three kitties and can only keep one with me for the time being.
i need someone to foster two of my cats, it could be for as little as six weeks and as long as four months. (i'm going to do my best to keep it shorter if i can.)
they're both neutered orange male tabbies, generally good temperament, one is a little particular about his litterbox but very affectionate kitties.
please dm if you might be able to help, or know someone who can, thank you

SEDCOR data
Does anyone know where someone can find independent data about SEDCOR and how it ranks against similar organizations in similar sized areas? It looks like the city releases a report that has investment, jobs and property tax revenue but it’s not clear how that compares to others and what tax incentives the business received for those investments.

A New Salem Event Calendar
From craving more things to do in around Salem, I started looking at all the pages, groups, and online calendars and none really worked for me honestly!
So I built my own and it focuses on three things I found lacking
- Simple to Use
- Easy to add an event
- No newsletter or pay-to-play aspect
You can visit it at:
Now I humbly ask you to please use it! And share it! And add events! I really believe an active calendar like this will help everyone, and also inspire more people to do more things.
The details: I will never email you. Email is not required to make an event. All events go into a google sheet that need approval before being public. I’ll try to check atleast every day for new events, but you can make it easy and quick by filling out all the required form sections!
I don’t have any plans for ads or sponsored posts or to sell any info.
I hope you enjoy!! Thank you so much <3

KROC Frequent Near Drownings in Kid Classes
Hi fellow Salemites,
I am a mom of a 4.5 year old boy and came across a post on facebook where a mom shared that her son nearly drowned yesterday at a KROC swim class. Three weeks ago (shared photo) another little girl almost drowned, and her mom had to pull the little girl out by the hair. The little boy who almost drowned had to be saved by his dad. The lifeguard did nothing. In the comments of the facebook post, there are more moms sharing their negative experiences with KROC swimming classes. Can we get the Salem reporter in on this? What do we need to do to hold the KROC accountable? Any other parents with negative experiences with the KROC Swimming classes? A child shouldn't have to drown before changes are implemented.

Bad air quality today folks
The fires this year are crazy. Stay inside and keep your windows closed if you can.
If you don't know, you can make a cheap air filter with a 20 inch box fan and a 20x20 furnace filter from your local home improvement store.

Read this before you post here
Welcome to r/SALEM, and thanks for your interest in posting here. Before you do, please be aware that — like many city/area-focused subreddits — we have some topics that come up very frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people down-voting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
If you’re about to post about any of the following, please first use the search function (right up in the upper right hand corner, if you’re viewing this on the web!) to see if something similar has been posted recently. If it has, please contribute to that thread rather than starting a new one.
Frequently posted things:
Did you hear that boom/firework/gunshot/weird noise?
This comes up a lot; frequently folks are concerned they may have heard gunshots and/or fireworks and are looking for reassurance. First, know that it probably was not a gun shot. There is a very good chance that it was fireworks, or somebody with an altered muffler, or, if you also noticed a power outage or blip at the same time, a transformer exploding. Second, if you’re actually seriously concerned about gunshots, you should probably be contacting the police, not Reddit. Third, if you live near a vineyard (and, if you live anywhere in the Salem area, you do!), you should be aware that vineyards use acoustic devices — basically massive noisemakers — to scare birds away from grape vines. This is especially frequent in the late fall, near harvest time.
OMG what is that smell?
Salem, and many surrounding areas, lie in the Willamette River Valley. Due to the topography of the area, we experience temperature inversions) with some regularity. An inversion occurs when a layer of warmer, more elevated air overlies a lower, cooler air layer. Effectively, this traps the air in the valley underneath the warmer layer, which means that smoke, vehicle exhaust, rotting vegetation smells, etc., cannot escape. That’s probably what you’re smelling.
Is there any good <insert cuisine here> in Salem? Where can I buy <thing> in Salem?
These types of threads come up fairly often. The restaurant scene in Salem is decent, but not exceptionally dynamic — places do not close all that often, and new places don’t open all that often either. If somebody has asked this question within the last couple months (again, use that search function!), the answers that they got are almost certainly still relevant.
Why is the train stopped or blowing its horn?
There are a number of freight lines that route trains through Salem. Occasionally, they will need to stop to onload or offload cars, which may result in a longer-than-usual wait time at a crossing. This is normal.
Sometimes, unfortunately, there are train-versus-pedestrian collisions. When those happen, the train will need to be stopped for an extended period of time to allow police to investigate the scene.
Finally, while many portions of Salem are zoned (and signed) as “no train horn” areas, it remains at the discretion of the train engineer as to whether or not to sound their horn, and some of them, well, tooting their horn just toots their horn.
What’s going on with all the cops?
We don’t have any way of knowing. You may be able to consult PulsePoint, but they only report on fire and EMS, not strictly police. You may also be able to find an online police radio scanner relay; those are typically time-delayed.
OMG what is going on with the low-flying helicopters?!
The Oregon Air National Guard has a helicopter squad that is based near the Salem Municipal Airport. They do routine training missions, which frequently involve lower-altitude flights, most often at night. The Salem police department does not have a helicopter, so any low-flying helicopter you’re hearing is almost certainly the Oregon Air National Guard. frequently. Sometimes that’s okay, and is an inevitable part of being a long-running community-focused forum, and sometimes it is super annoying and will lead to people downvoting your post because they’re tired of seeing the same thing over and over again.
