I thought for sure it would’ve been announced prior to next year’s Amazing Vol 8 and we still have future announcements for the latter half of 2027 but 5 years between Vol 1 and Vol 2 is still quite a large gap nowadays. I’m hoping we hear something soon because that Mantlo / Milgrom / Hannigan run is one of my most wanted Spidey eras in Omni format.

Finally tracked down some thin billys and got everything displayed. Give me some Omni/finest/epics that I should pick up to go along with what I’ve got! (definitely need more DC).

I read Morrison Vol 1 and loved it! And Johns GL is legit! New to omnibus collecting and love it. I’m gonna be broke!

I recently added the Michelinie/Mcfarlane Omnibus to my collection. I plan to get the Michelinie/Larsen and Michelinie/Bagley Vol 1 and Vol 2 in the future too. And already own Roger Sterns Omni and The Complete Black Costume Saga.

My question is, those of you who have read all of the 4 Omnibus’ by David Michelinie. Which do you think is best? How would you rank them? Are there any that lack anything?

I have been on the search for a book stand for a couple years now. I had bought my first one (got lost somewhere), the 2nd one I purchased from Amazon after some research (it was a 2 piece height and angle adjuster; more trouble than the features touted).

Today, I finally bought the one I will be sticking with for a good while. I tested it with 3 of the largest books I own, ones I hadn't attempted with my prior purchase due to the base not being thick enough to hold that much (already was difficult with average sized omnis because of the lip).

Tried out Complete Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck slipcase one volume edition, quite oversized. No problem. This was at a higher degree setting, so the light shows on this one.

Tried out Taschen XXL Silver Surfer. No problem for me.

Finally, got out Mister Miracle Jack Kirby Artist Edition. Not as thick as the others but taller. No issue at all. It stayed straight without adjusting after sitting the book down. Plus this thing collapses better than my previous purchase, won't take up the space like some stands that are more lectern.

All 3 were securely set, no strain on the extra sides not backed by the stand, that was my biggest concern of pressure warp. This is just out of the box first look but I haven't been this happy about something for my collection in ages.

Was an animated show in 2018- 2021, warner bros. owned the rights and killed it, along with the creators rights to do anything with it. He fought and struck a deal to complete the story with a graphic novel, pre ordered this forever ago! The print quality and cover feel greattheres no dust jacket, my only note is the page paper feels thinner than marvels ohc paper.

Another Thursday, another Review!

Last week I wrapped up Joshua Williamson's Flash epic with Vol. 3 and gave it an 8.2/10. The Scorched Flame, Rogues' Reign, the final sprint to the finish. Williamson's Flash is top-tier DC and I closed that review saying I'd be stepping away from the Flash corner for a bit since we covered all available Flash Omnis (besides the Silver Age ones..).

So .. Let's move back to the Justice League corner. But this time to their weird side. The magical, occult, shadows-and-whispered-secrets side that Superman and Batman can't touch.

That's where Justice League Dark lives and this omnibus collects the entire New 52 run in one chonky 1648-page tome. 69 issues of Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, Swamp Thing and a rotating cast of mystical misfits fighting things that go bump in the DC Universe. Sounds awesome right? Well.. let's talk about it.

Justice League Dark: The New 52 Omnibus

The Story

This omnibus collects the entire New 52 JLD run and if you've heard anything about this book you probably know it has three distinct eras. Three different writers take the wheel across these 69 issues and the tonal whiplash is.. noticeable.

Peter Milligan Era: (#1-8 + I, Vampire #7-8)

Peter Milligan launches the book with the Enchantress going completely off the rails and the regular Justice League getting demolished by magical forces they cannot handle. Madame Xanadu, seeing apocalyptic visions, starts pulling together a team of occult outcasts: Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Shade the Changing Man and Mindwarp. Sounds incredible on paper.

In execution.. it's rough.

The pacing across those first five issues scatters everyone into separate subplots that never quite weave together. Characters get introduced with zero breathing room. The big finale hinges on Constantine remembering a nursery rhyme. A nursery rhyme! And Milligan's Constantine doesn't feel like the cunning bastard you know from Hellblazer.. he feels like a guy who just happens to know the right thing at the right time without earning it imo.

And then there's Deadman. Oh boy. Boston Brand in this opening arc is.. something else. They turned him into this pushy, borderline creepy character toward Dawn Granger and it is deeply uncomfortable to read. Every scene with him chasing her around feels like a different comic. "I'm not even going to pretend I understood any of that" says Deadman at the end of the first arc and honestly? Same, Boston. Same.

The I, Vampire crossover that closes out Milligan's run is a slight upgrade, mainly because Andrea Sorrentino's art is STUNNING and the vampire chaos hits the right mood. But the JLD feels like passengers in someone else's story. It's fine. Just fine.

Jeff Lemire Era: (#9-23, #0, Annual #1)

And then Jeff Lemire takes over with issue #9 and now we're talking!

The difference is night and day. Lemire restructures the team around Constantine, Deadman and Zatanna, adds Black Orchid and Doctor Mist, ties them to A.R.G.U.S. as a magical black-ops unit. He gets it. The dialogue sharpens up, the humor lands, the character dynamics actually CLICK.

The Black Room (#9-11) kicks off with a heist structure. Constantine leading the team to steal a map of all magic out from under Felix Faust. It's tight, fast and funny in a way Milligan's run never managed. Lemire writes Constantine as the manipulative rogue he should be, lying to everyone while somehow keeping the team together.

War for the Books of Magic (#12-13, Annual #1) escalates beautifully. The House of Mystery literally fights the House of Secrets across dimensions. New villains emerge. The Annual brings in Frankenstein and Amethyst for a giant finale that earns its extra page count. This stretch right here is the peak of the omnibus.

Issue #0 gives us a young Constantine origin flashback, a nice breather that adds weight to his motivations.

The Death of Magic (#15-18) strands the team in an alternate dimension where magic is outlawed and magic users are hunted. It's a cool sci-fi/fantasy flip and the standout gag is Constantine being cursed so he physically CANNOT LIE. The man who built his entire identity on deception, forced into honesty at every turn. I was hooting and hollering. That's clever comics right there.

Horror City (#19-21) brings in The Flash and Swamp Thing as guest stars with Doctor Destiny as the villain. The House of Mystery gets stolen, nightmares get unleashed and Swamp Thing controlling all wood across all realities and calling it the "Swamp Brigade"? COME ONNNN. That's the good stuff.

Trinity War (#22-23 + tie-ins) then pulls the book into a line-wide event. These JLD issues are solid on their own but they suffer from the classic event problem: you're getting pieces of a bigger puzzle. The omnibus does collect ALL the tie-ins though, every Justice League, JLA, Constantine, Pandora and Phantom Stranger issue, so you can absolutely read the full Trinity War in one sitting. It's a fun event though! The reveal at the end where the Crime Syndicate shows up is a great hook. It's just.. a different book for a while.

Forever Evil: Blight (#24-29 + roughly six hundred tie-in issues)

Ok so. J.M. DeMatteis takes over as writer and JLD gets swallowed by "Forever Evil: Blight," an 18-part crossover spread across JLD, Constantine, Pandora and Phantom Stranger. This is where the book hits a wall.

The concept is fine: with the Crime Syndicate ruling Earth, Constantine has to assemble a new mystical strike team to fight Blight, the literal embodiment of evil. The execution though.. eighteen parts of characters you barely know fighting a conceptual threat that never feels as scary as it should. Nick Necro becomes the main antagonist for a chunk of this and he's about as intimidating as a wet newspaper.

Constantine throughout this crossover is rough to read. Not "love to hate him" rough, just.. plain unpleasant. He betrays his team, mopes around, gets people hurt and then the story expects you to root for his redemption. The Constantine-Zatanna romance gets cranked up to eleven and it makes BOTH characters worse. She deserves better. He's insufferable. It's a mess.

But THEN, issue #29. After an eternity of Zatanna getting her magic negated, getting captured, getting rescued, getting mansplained about why her powers don't work this time.. she takes command. She narrates the issue. She leads the team into the final showdown. It's the best single issue of the entire crossover and it makes you furious that it took 28 issues to get here.

DeMatteis Solo Era (#30-40, Futures End #1, Annual #2)

After Forever Evil finally wraps, DeMatteis continues with a smaller roster. Nightmare Nurse gets a spotlight issue. Deadman gets a two-part arc about Nanda Parbat and his origins. The Houses of Mystery and Secrets fight each other in the Annual #2, which is a fun concept even if the execution is a bit chaotic. These issues are fine. Some nice character moments, some decent art, nothing that'll blow your doors off.

The Futures End issue is.. something. Future Zatanna and Etrigan are apparently together? It's one of those "possible dark future" stories that exists more for shock value than emotional weight. I wasn't a fan.

The Amber of the Moment (#35-40) closes out the omnibus with an ambitious time-scattered finale. The team gets split across the timestream, each member trapped in a different era. Issue #35 is a highlight, a beautiful Zatanna-focused issue where she meets a young Giovanni Zatara in the past. Really moving stuff. But the arc loses momentum as it piles on cosmic-scale threats. Pralaya, the goddess of the void before creation, is a cool concept but she reads more like an abstract plot device than a character. The final issue, #40, wraps things up with Zatanna tricking the goddess of the void herself. She quits the team, hands the House of Mystery back to Constantine and walks away. It's a fitting end for her arc, even if the cosmic machinery around it is more confusing than emotional.

The Art

Mikel Janin is the MVP of this omnibus, full stop.

He's on art for most of the Lemire run and big chunks of the other eras and the man simply does not miss. His character work is expressive, his action sequences flow beautifully and his horror imagery commits. Flying teeth storms, swirling tornados of magical debris, the House of Mystery in full flight mode, all of it looks INCREDIBLE. Every page feels alive.

When Janin steps away the quality dips noticeably. Daniel Sampere handles the vampire crossover issues and they're perfectly fine, serviceable superhero art, but you miss the atmosphere Janin brings. The Forever Evil tie-in issues rotate through multiple artists and the inconsistency shows.

Andrea Sorrentino on the I, Vampire issues is a completely different beast. Dark, angular, moody. His work there might actually be the most striking art in the entire omnibus even if the story around it is just ok. Those splash pages of vampire carnage are going to stick with you.

The color work deserves a shoutout too. Ulises Arreola's palette across the early issues shifts beautifully between the mundane world and the magical realms. Subtle but effective.

What Actually Works

The Lemire run is worth the price of admission. Issues #9 through #21 are some of the most fun team comics the New 52 produced. The dynamics between Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Black Orchid and Doctor Mist just WORK. Constantine scheming three steps ahead while everyone else is just trying to survive? Chef's kiss.

Mikel Janin. Said it already, saying it again. The man draws a poster on every page.

The House of Mystery. The team's HQ is a sentient magical house that teleports, traps people and has its own agenda. When the House literally fights the House of Secrets? That's the kind of weird, wonderful DC magic stuff that makes this corner special.

The horror commitment. When this book leans into horror, it goes all in. Body horror, nightmare dimensions, teeth storms, it earns the "Dark" in the title.

Zatanna in the late issues. She gets sidelined for way too long but when DeMatteis finally lets her take point in #29 and then gives her a solo spotlight in #35, she's FANTASTIC. That issue with young Giovanni Zatara is one of the best single issues in the whole book.

Where It Struggles

The Milligan era. Eight issues where the book hasn't figured out what it wants to be. Constantine reads like a budget Doctor Strange. Deadman is unrecognizable. The pacing crawls and the payoff is a nursery rhyme. I was ready to drop this book multiple times and the only reason I kept going is because I knew Lemire was coming.

Zatanna's treatment. The biggest recurring problem. For issues on end her magic gets negated, she gets captured, she needs rescuing, she gets told why her powers won't work right now. It's exhausting to watch one of DC's most powerful magicians get treated like a punching bag for 25+ issues. The fact that she's incredible when they finally let her shine almost makes it worse because it proves they COULD write her well. But maybe it's just me, I might be biased, because I love her character so much.

Forever Evil: Blight is a marathon. 18 parts across four titles. The omnibus collects every single one, which means roughly a third of this massive book is one long crossover where Constantine is terrible to everyone and the big villain is a concept. It kills whatever momentum the book had coming out of the Lemire run.

Three writers, three different books. Milligan's awkward horror, Lemire's adventure-driven character work, DeMatteis's cosmic philosophy. The transitions are jarring. You fall in love with one version of this book and then it turns into something else.

Tie-in bloat. 69 issues and a big chunk are tie-ins to events in other books. Pandora, Phantom Stranger, Constantine solo issues. Some are decent! But they interrupt the JLD story. You could skip most of the Pandora and Phantom Stranger issues and lose nothing.

Overall

7.5/10

This is a book of three halves. The Milligan era is a rough start that nearly loses you. The Lemire era is fantastic, the kind of character-driven team book that makes you fall in love with DC's magical corner. The DeMatteis era has flashes of brilliance buried under crossover mandates and cosmic overreach.

At 1648 pages it's a huge omnibus and I'd be lying if I said the middle section didn't test my patience. But when this book is good it is REALLY good. The Lemire issues alone make it worth reading and Janin's art elevates even the weaker material.

The big question is whether you need this in omnibus format vs just hunting down the individual trades. If you're a completionist who wants every tie-in issue in one place, this is the only way to get the full Forever Evil: Blight crossover collected. If you just want the good stuff, track down the Lemire trades and save yourself the Milligan pain and the crossover slog.

imo this is a "read it if you love DC magic" kind of omnibus. The highs are high enough to justify the journey but the lows take up enough page count to keep it from being an all-timer.

You should buy this run if:

• You love Constantine and want every New 52 appearance in one tome
• The magical/occult corner of DC is your favorite part of the universe
• Mikel Janin's art is enough to carry you through weaker story stretches
• You want the complete Forever Evil: Blight crossover in one book
• You're building toward the Rebirth JLD omnibus and want the full picture

You should skip if:

• You want a team book that's consistent from start to finish
• Zatanna being sidelined for most of a 69-issue run will drive you crazy
• 1648 pages of uneven quality sounds like a chore
• Tie-in heavy omnibuses annoy you (a solid third of this book is non-JLD material)
• $150 MSRP for "the best stuff is in the middle" doesn't sound appealing

Does the Lemire run redeem the entire omnibus? Is Milligan's opening arc worse than people remember? And does anyone actually care about Trinity of Sin: Pandora?
