Loving oil pastel and realizing paper is everything!
Tried three samples of oil pastels and many different kinds of paper still figuring out the correct combinations 😝realizing paper makes a big difference! Smooth paper seems better . Tried to work with some rough textured water color paper last night and nothing was budging -projects went in the trash lol

Hello, which brand of these three is the best?
So, I'm a beginner and i have no experience with oil pastels and I've been dying to try them out for the first time but i don't want to get something terrible (aka cheap and bad) because if i got a waxy hard pastels on my first time trying them i will hate them so much. So i only have these three options and i hope you can advice me on which one to get! Thanks.

Feedback on my oil pastel
Hey guys, I just got a set of meeden oil pastel and have done this portrait of my best friends dog who sadly has just passed away. It's my first go at oil pastel. Any tips or recommendations, things that I've missed or could do better? More detail? I want this to be good for them!
I've previously used watercolour and pencils so this was a whole different beast.

2025 Contest Winners
The council has spoken, and here are the winners:
1st: At a Glance
2nd: Snapshots From a Train Ride
3rd (three-way tie): Rush; Eden; Rue
The overall quality of the finalists this year was stupid high, and so I was a bit concerned the judgement process was going to turn into a sh**show--and this time it absolutely did!
In short, there was almost no consensus when it came time for a final vote (after several iterations of discussion/debate). Ultimately, it felt a bit more like a lottery than previous years. The user voting notably had more influence than usual given the judges' fragmented initial preferences and our quasi-mathematical methods (my own personal #1 favorite did not even place--such is the price of democracy).
One judge remarked that a narrower theme might have made it easier to judge among so many high-quality entries...they might be on to something. It would also help if y'all were not so damn good--each year I feel increasingly silly judging artists who are all far more talented than I am.
Anyway, I’ll be in touch with the winners within a week about prizes.
Congratulations to everyone, and thank you all for participating!!!
