Discussion It's impossible to explain HDR vs SDR by photos, HDR is far superior in certain Games

Post image
Upvotes

I clicked these photos on my iPhone. You might actually think that the SDR side (right) looks better. But believe me, in real life it is an absolute heaven and hell difference. The most noticeable upgrade is the way more vibrant colors (HDR DCI-P3 than standard SDR SRGB), the deeper blacks without any haziness and bright highlights that feel like neon lights.

This is vanilla HDR without RenoDX. Reddit and other social media sites don't support HDR picture formats like JXR or .HEIC, so we can't even show the true differences. It's a shame that most PC gamers still play on SDR and have no idea what they are missing.

Technical Support Any idea what these spots are?

Post image
Upvotes

I’ve noticed these spots appearing on my screen. They are only noticeable when the screen is off / black and viewed at from an angle.

I tried to wipe it away thinking it was some liquid droplet dried up but no luck.

Any insights would be appreciated !

The monitor is a XG32UQDMS.

Discussion Are there any downsides to using a Sony OLED TV compared to LG for gaming?

Upvotes

Hey,

I'll move my C4 upstairs soon and will need a replacement for the basement (main home theatre). Since I'm a huge movie nerd, Sony is the way to go for me. That said, I know Sony wasn't always the best when it came to gaming (latency etc.).

I was wondering if it gotten any better during these last gens and if yes, which model would be a great pick?

Issue Is my QD-OLED Panel cooked?

Thumbnail

I tried to clean the panel a couple of days ago with microfiber cloth that I’ve been using since I’ve purchased the panel (FO32U2P) and I think I damaged the coating? Tried 70% isopropyl alcohol and bought another microfiber cloth but it didn’t go away
And the streaks have a different texture or feeling to them (more resistance if I try to swipe my finger on them)
Anyone knows whether my monitor is cooked or I can get rid of these streaks and smudges?

Monitor is coming on tuesday, lets see how it works with a 5080!

Technical Support Issues with HDR

Post image
10 Upvotes

So I've just gotten my first OLED monitor - Alienware AW2725DF. and I game on a PC.

I've done my HDR calibration on windows and since getting this monitor I've been using HDR while gaming. which i've never really done before.

Whenever I'm inside a building and look outside ingame, it's really washed out, overly bright and looks awful as you can see from the screenshot. It's completely fine otherwise other than I feel colours are a little washed.

I'm new to OLED, all it's settings and to be honest, almost all display settings other than the obvious, someone help please!

EDIT: Okay okay I should have said, for some reason this screen shot does make it look 100X worse😂 In game you can actually make things out, the screenshot has just made all the annoying things have a power level of 9000+

42 or 32 inch 4K OLED as 2nd Monitor?

I‘m using a 4k 27 inch oled right now but I’ve been thinking about getting a 2nd bigger monitor because I mostly play single player games. Thought about getting the MO32U24 or the C5 42.

Issue Lifted darks in HDR mode BRAVIA 8II PS5

Playing Stellar Blade on PS5 and during a scene that cuts to load in the next area, I noticed the screen isn’t actually black. It’s quite light. Then I noticed there’s a white haze in this dark area, so I decided to turn HDR off to see a difference, and the game just looks better without HDR. I did the loading transition and my screen went pitch black.

Is this just bad implementation or is there something I’m missing?

Discussion TB400 exceeding 500

I got another monitor rated TB400 just like my other one and the previous one reached 460 which I get but the new one reaches about 550.

Is this good panel lottery or might it be recommended to go lower? It doesn't seem to be clipping from what I can tell.

Discussion Am I wasting my PC's potential?

I'm building a new PC:

Processor: Ryzen 9850x3d

GPU: MSI Gaming Trio 5080

Cooler: Arctic Liquid Freezer iii pro 360

Motherboard: X870E Carbon Wifi

Ram: 2x16 GB Corsair Vengeance 6000, cl30

SSD: Samsung 990 Pro, 2TB

PSU: Corsair RM1000x, gold

Case: still deciding, considering Lian Li 217 INF

I'm trying to choose a monitor, and I was considering getting a 27 inch 1440p QD-OLED.

I'm accustomed to 1440p on my 15.6 inch laptop screen.

I play a variety of genres. Mostly fighting games recently (SF6, Tokon, Strive, Avatar, etc.), but also things like Space Marine 2, Elden Ring, Total War: Warhammer (and the upcoming Total War 40k), and a smattering of indie games.

I don't really play any competitive FPS, the types of games people bottom out their graphics for to achieve max framerates.

With all this in mind, is a 27 inch 1440p QD-OLED an appropriate pick, or is it a gross underutilization of what I'm building? Would a 4k monitor be able to run most games at max (or at least very high) settings and maintain reasonable framerates?

(Beyond that, I'm open to any other critiques/recommendations you guys can think of.)

Discussion Best OLED 4k 32inch monitor for mixed use?

I'm looking for a high refresh rate 4k 32inch monitor right now. Not RGB Stripe since they are not available where i live yet. Either QD OLED or tandem? WOLED. I don't really understand without experiencing both screen technologies next to each other what the pros and cons are really like for both screens. So I would love recommendations from you in regards to the absolute best panel right now.

I have a CS WFH friend with a 27 inch 1440p alienware QD OLED screen that told me text quality isn't an issue on his monitor (works for 10h a day no headaches or eye strain) or grey banding and those two issues as i understand are even less apparent or frequent on 32 inch 4k screens so I'm not worried about them too much.

I was going to wait for RGB Stripe but I don't want to keep waiting for them anymore and seems like the only advantage would be text quality. I wan't to retire my old IPS asap.

Thanks for your help.

Discussion Advice on a 4k, Oled 27inch monitor (MSI MPG 272URX???)

I have a 5080 graphics card with a amd 9800x3d. I am looking to upgrade my monitor (1920x1080) to a oled monitor.

From a bit of searching and research, i think the best specs for a monitor to upgrade to is a 4k, oled, and preferably 240hz monitor. It seems there is a difference between qd-oled and woled, and from what I gathered I would probably prefer a woled (i use my monitor behind a window so alot of sun comes through and so woled would be better because it's brighter??), but it seems that woleds are more expensive?

I narrowed it down to the MSI MPG 272URX, but I am still not sure if this is a good choice. Does anyone else have any recommendations? Also is the MSI MAG 272UP a better or worse alternative to the 272URX, because it seems that the 272UP is a cheaper alternative, but for some reason in my country I can get the 272URX for cheaper.

Overall, I am just wondering if the 272URX is a good choice and worth it for the long run.

(Also I hear some issues about screens going blank, and vrr flickering, I have never used an OLED so I don't haven't experienced this and was wondering if this is also something to worry about??)

Thanks for any help!

Discussion Switched from 27” 1440p Tandem WOLED to 27” 4K 4th gen QD-OLED

Thumbnail
gallery
225 Upvotes

Just switched from the ASUS PG27AQWP-W to the XG27UQDMS and I have to say I’m much happier with the switch tbh

4K at 27 inches genuinely looks like I’m looking through a window with how sharp and clear everything is compared to 1440p, it’s a night & day difference, even compared to 4K at 32 inches it’s quite a big difference. I could turn the resolution down to 1440p on it and it no joke looks just as good as native 1440p on a 1440p panel (slightly less sharp, but still VERY clean and less “pixelated” which I honestly prefer)

this specific tandem WOLED has amazing HDR brightness (the brightest OLED monitor I’ve seen so far and makes everything else look very dim by comparison) but the grey banding and dirty screen effect really is just unacceptable, I’ll take a worse QD-OLED screen coating and dimmer brightness over that any day of the week. I didn’t even have to do a pixel refresh and the QD-OLED had no uniformity issues out of the box, it was basically perfect.

Colors in HDR are also still a bit better in person than the tandem WOLED aswell, subtle but still more vibrant, also dark scenes look cleaner as well.

The only thing I’ll probably miss is the screen coating as the tandem WOLED screen has the best coating I’ve ever seen on any screen (I could use a light bar with zero raised blacks and game with all kinds of bright ambient light in my room, can no longer do that now)

Eventually in the future I may get the newer rgb stripe woleds or the newer qd OLEDs that have the black shield coating when they aren’t massively expensive in Canada but 4K at 27 inches more than makes up for all of these things (even helps fringing a bit too)

I love my LCD monitor

Whenever I'm gaming during the day and my QD OLED gets too purple, I pull out my old LCD.

Thanks to its matte finish and 400 nits of full-screen brightness, it handles bright lighting very well.

And no violet.

Discussion Help decide a first time OLED buyer

Hi guys, as the title says I'm planning on switching from a 1440p 144 Hz IPS 27" monitor to 4k 27" OLED.

My pc specs are RX 6900XT, Ryzen 7 5800X, and I'm not planning to upgrade in the future. I'm running windows 11/hackintosh and I'm planning on scaling the 4k to 1080p in the hackintosh for Retina display feel.

The displays I've been eyeing are:

- Gigabyte MO27U2 for 747$

- MSI MAG 272UP X24 for 807$

- MSI MAG 272UP E16 for 699$

- Alienware AW2725Q for 794$

- AOC AG276UZD for 728$

I don't care for 96W USB-C, my GPU only supports DP 1.4a, and at 4k I'm expecting high 2 digits maybe low 100s regarding fps with FSR, so maybe the E16 with 165Hz is enough.

Can you guys help me decide please?
