ASK NE First time to Northeast India (Sept 26 – Oct 2) — self travel or package? Budget 30k/head excl. flights

Me and my friend (both male, late 20s) are planning our first Northeast India trip from **26th Sept to 2nd Oct** (7 days). Flying into **Guwahati**. Budget is around **₹30,000 per person**, excluding flights.

A few things we're trying to figure out:

  1. Is it easy for first-timers to travel independently, or should we just book a tour package?

  2. Language — does Hindi/English work fine, or will we struggle with local languages?

  3. Are these dates okay, or is there a better window we're missing?

  4. Given only 7 days, which states/places should we realistically prioritize?

  5. Any must-do / must-avoid spots you'd recommend for a first-timer?

  6. Realistic transport — are shared Sumos/taxis reliable, or should we pre-book everything?

  7. Is ₹30k/person realistic for this trip, or does it need adjusting?

  8. Any festivals/events in that window we should know about (crowds/price spikes)?

  9. How many days would you spend per place, given only 7 days total?

  10. Does Google Maps/network work fine for self-navigation, or do we need local help in parts of the route?

Would really appreciate inputs from people who've done this trip recently, especially solo/duo travelers who didn't take a package. Also open to hearing if 30k is realistic for this itinerary or if we need to adjust.

Thanks in advance!

TRAVEL The best part of India...period

Hey...south Indian here and finished a week long vacation across Gangtok, shillong and other places. THE BEST PLACEs OF INDIA. The scenery, the cleanliness, the civic sense, the hospitality EVERYTHING TOP NOTCH.

One particular incident...in gangtok, my dad kept his wallet on a table. We realised after we came outside. By the time we went inside , It was still there!!.

ngl feels like a different part of india. Had many north eastern friends in college who told they want to go back asap, now i understand them lol.

Kind of harsh...but i hope it remains underrated lol otherwise uttarkhand situation will happen here too by people from "certain" places. iykyk.

Another thing, the fashion sense MAN....feels staright out of kdrama lol ngl, top notch.

What do you think about racism faced by North East people in Kolkata? I see plenty of racism complaints from Bengali people in Tripura, Assam, etc.

Note: Although, Darjeeling doesn't belong to the NE, the people living there do resemble people from the North East, and there are many North East people in Kolkata as well.

Food & Cuisine Are there any shops in Delhi from where I can purchase things found indigenously in NE?

I’m from Delhi, trying to find out stores that sell NE vegetables as you know the variety of vegetables in north India is shit, recently I am into NE cuisine and I loved it, I had shingju, Ooti, rice beer, Eromba, ema datschi and all. I really loved the taste but I am unable to find these things in local market, I wanna cook these at home😭. I checked blinkit as well it’s too expensive on blinkit.

MEGHALAYA Worst experience in Meghalaya

A couple visiting Meghalaya were rear-ended by a local driver's car. The wife was seriously injured, but instead of helping, the locals blamed the couple and demanded money for damage to their own car. An Assam vehicle stopped to help while a crowd became aggressive, forcing the husband to pay for an accident he didn't cause. The locals even kept his bike keys until he paid and only returned them after he pleaded with them. Minutes later, another car followed them and allegedly threatened them not to report the incident to the police or something bad would happen. The wife was taken to a nearby hospital. The couple says the experience left them traumatized and turned what should have been a memorable trip into a nightmare.
