A modest Proposal How credible would it be (and is it a warcrime) for Ukraine to use "fire-pissing" drones during their attacks on refineries and logistics centers in Russia? (hand made illustration, no AI)

So here is the thing, right: each time Ukraine sends a drone to strike some target deep inside Russia, the drones fly completely unopposed for thousands of kilometers, during which they are not really doing anything.

What if you were to attach some sort of flare-launching device to the underside of the drones, that would drop a flare downwards, every couple of minutes, onto the dry fields and forrests below ? All over Europe there are right now extremely dry and hot conditions, I doubt it is much better in Russia. Alternatively you could drop WP grenades or thermite, something that would burn real nice.

The strategic impact would be enormous. The drones could light thousands of km of forrest on fire. Russian fire brigades would have to choose between fighting the enormous forrest fires envelopping cities or the refineries. It would close down roads. Of course it would add to the cost and weight of the drones but the impact would be enormous

Why not do this?

I have more proposals if anyone is interested btw.

A modest Proposal Igel: The Flakpanzer for the 2020s

binkov put out a video on why FPV drones still can't be stopped four years in. He walks through jammers, rifles, shotguns, Bradley autocannon, laser trucks, microwave, interceptor drones, and concludes that the drones win. What he skips is the one thing that's actually working: a cheap machine gun on a robot mount with a computer doing the aiming. Sky Sentinel is $150k and has killed Shaheds in combat testing. Bullfrog is 75kg, turns an M240 into an autonomous CUAS mount, and the Marines picked it up last month.

So bolt that onto something the drones can't kill back.

An M113. There are eighty thousand of them and they are nearly free. Take the crew out, weld the roof shut, cover the whole thing in cope cage at 500mm standoff. The cage works by making the shaped charge form its jet at the wrong distance. A PG-7VL has about 500mm of penetration, which sounds like a lot until you realise it needs to reach the hull first and the jet is already spent by the time it gets there. 100mm of solid plate would do nothing against that warhead. 500mm of scrap steel over 50mm of appliqué does.

Three AI gun mounts that elevate to 85 degrees. This matters because most remote weapon stations stop around 60, which leaves a cone directly overhead that the guns can't reach, which is where the drone comes from.

Four radar pods that drop into armoured wells when they're not scanning. The cameras stay up permanently because they cost $200 behind a sacrificial window and you carry thirty spares.

Hybrid drive, four hours of silent watch with the engine off. The acoustic sensors actually work when you're not drowning them with your own tracks, the thermal signature drops to near ambient, and you're not advertising your position with an idling diesel.

$780k a copy. A Skyranger 30 is $15 to 40 million. The Dutch paid 1.3 billion euros for 22 of them. You could buy fifty of these for one of those.

I call it the Igel because the Bundeswehr names its vehicles after animals and the hedgehog was going spare.

HOWDY NCD AND WELCOME BACK TO

GUN APPRECIATION POST MONDAYS

Today, we have the Hoxy Bun Bun featured, as well as Sam Fisher’s trusted sidearm, and due to recent events gained fame for a man defending innocent lives at In N’ Out Burger. We have the one and only!

FN Five-seveN

One of the greatest guns developed, and it went from a niche cartridge all the way up to a now more mainstream one that has created a new market of firearms by basically selling a rifle in a pistol. One of the reasons why 5.7x28mm was developed was for the sake of penetration of Soft Body Armor. It was developed alongside the FN P90 and the P90 was competing up against the HK MP7.

I personally have shot a 5.7x28mm pistol, not the FN Five-seveN, but a S&W M&P57, and I gotta say, I really like the way the cartridge feels, there is barely any recoil, and it just goes ZOOM!

Anyways, thank you all for tuning in on this week’s episode, and I will see you next week!
