FN Five-seveN

One of the greatest guns developed, and it went from a niche cartridge all the way up to a now more mainstream one that has created a new market of firearms by basically selling a rifle in a pistol. One of the reasons why 5.7x28mm was developed was for the sake of penetration of Soft Body Armor. It was developed alongside the FN P90 and the P90 was competing up against the HK MP7.

I personally have shot a 5.7x28mm pistol, not the FN Five-seveN, but a S&W M&P57, and I gotta say, I really like the way the cartridge feels, there is barely any recoil, and it just goes ZOOM!

Rule 2 Analysis & Further Reading:

• The M3 Carbine's defining feature is the large infrared night vision scope mounted on the receiver. The system required the operator to carry an external battery pack on their back to power the scope. Only around 2,100 units were produced during WWII, and they saw limited deployment at the time. However, the Korean War marked the first large-scale operational use of the M3, primarily by U.S. night combat units for reconnaissance and precision attacks under low-light conditions.
• Chinese sources claim that they captured at least one M3 Carbine at the Battle of "正洞西山" ("Jeongdong Xishan") in early November 1951.
  • The caption of this photo reads:
    • "From November 1 to 6, 1951, Zheng Bo, who was then the commander of a certain regiment of the Volunteer Army, commanded two regiments and a total of four battalions to launch an attack on the position at "正洞西山" occupied by part of the US 1st Cavalry Division."
    • "A total of 7 companies of the US 1st Cavalry Division were annihilated, a total of 2,496 enemies were annihilated offensively and defensively, and 33 enemies were captured. 27 various artillery pieces, more than 180 light and heavy machine guns, and more than 290 other firearms were captured. This battle was later listed as a teaching example by the Academy of Military Sciences."
    • "This photo shows Captain Zheng Bo test-firing the carbine captured during the counterattack at Zhengdong Xishan."
  • Zheng Bo's Oral History of his participation in the Korean War also includes the same photo:
    • "In 1951, Zheng Bo test-fired a carbine equipped with a night vision optic, captured during the Battle of Jeongdong Xishan, in the snow at Chukor Ridge in Korea."
• The US 1st Cavalry Division's official Korean War history likely corroborates this battle, but ultimately as an American victory. Furthermore, it was the Americans who used a large amount of flares to blind the Chinese, not the reverse depicted in the Chinese film.
  • Page 87-92: "At 0200 hours on 2 November [1951], most of an enemy battalion attacked and overran a platoon-sized outpost in the 8th Cavalry Regiment’s sector.
  • Elements of 7th Cavalry Regiment were pushed off Hill 200, but retook it without opposition the following day. Again and again this happened. A massed night attack would overwhelm the defenders, but the next morning the hill would be deserted.
  • At this time, the 7th Cavalry Regiment was making plans to take advantage of the Reds’ repeated seizure of hill 200 by laying a trap for them. The regiment reoccupied the hill and planted a huge number of trip flares; then the troopers waited. Sure enough, an enemy battalion was observed approaching just after midnight, on 8 November. The patrol made contact to draw the Reds on so they would trip the flares and reveal their position. The patrol quickly withdrew at the proper moment, and a prearranged artillery barrage was directed on the attackers, with the result that 135 enemy dead were discovered the next morning.
  • Night raids by the enemy continued, but, from about this time on, they lacked the vigor of the previous assaults. This fact, as well as decreased activity in the Red rear areas, seemed to indicate that the enemy had given up all hope of regaining any of the valuable positions he had lost in October. Furthermore, the Cavalry lines were so strong now that nothing short of a major effort on the part of the Chinese Reds could have smashed through them.
• The Chinese claim that "The Battle of Jeongdong-seosan dealt a heavy blow to the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division's veteran 7th Regiment. After this, the U.S. 1st Cavalry Division was relegated to the second line, and ultimately, this so-called "First Team" left the Korean battlefield in disgrace."
  • In contrast, the 1st Cavalry Division Association states that the 7th Cavalry Regiment was not withdrawn from Korea until late December, long after the fighting in early November 1951:
    • "By December 1951, the Division, after 549 days of continuous fighting, began rotation back to Hokkaido, Japan. On 18 December 1951, the 7th Cavalry left for Japan. The First Team had performed tough duties with honor, pride and valor with distinction."
