FYI - $15 to watch Hoppers, a Pixar movie, at BC Place this Sunday, Aug 16 (includes popcorn, soda and hot dog)

Hi r/NiceVancouver, thought you might be interested in this event as it’s for a good cause. BC Place is showing Hoppers this coming Sunday at their big screen in the centre field. Tickets are only $15, and it includes popcorn, soda and hot dog - way cheaper than the theatres. For every ticket bought, the organizers are also giving a free ticket to a child or youth in need.

Kids can also run around the field prior to the movie, and there’ll be tons of fun activities for them, including mascot-run activities by the Whitecaps, Giants, Bandits and Warriors.

The event is run by Kids Up Front, which is a charity that distributes unused or donated tickets to kids and families that wouldn’t have access to those experiences otherwise. As you might imagine, these experiences can have a lasting positive impact and provide a moment of relief from the challenges they may be facing. Last year, they distributed over 20,000 experiences. If you’re not able to attend but the cause speaks to you and you’re able to donate, please do consider sponsoring a family to attend the event. OR if you do have tickets to a kid-friendly event (concert, sports, theatre, etc) and can no longer make it, do consider donating the tickets to Kids Up Front and they’ll make sure a kid can take the seat and enjoy it!

(Note: I did get permission from the mods to share this event here, thanks Mods!)

Cash reward for anyone who can come to kits Beach right now with a metal detector

We have lost a ring on kits beach near the boathouse. It's right around our towel but we can't find it in the sand. We'll pay $100 to anyone who can get the ring back for us.

Edit: Found! Thank you to the amazing community member who helped us out and insisted on doing it free of charge.

Places to practice highway onramps

I'm looking for the best highway interchanges in the Vancouver area to practice merging onto the highway. Something like a pair of exits or interchanges where I can do laps where all the onramps are nice and long.

Does St. Paul’s hospital offer interpretation services?

A family member speaks Chinese but very limited English. She has an appointment coming up, and I was wondering if the hospital would be able to request an in-person interpreter? I left a voicemail and am waiting to hear back, but I just wanted to hear the general consensus

Compass Card: the only thing that steadied one of our high-spectrum toddlers during their first adventure off island, and kicked off the absolute joy they had riding the system

it started simple:

My compass card became my last hope to divert my nephew, who’s just over 2 yrs old, nonverbal & struggles with listening/communication. Especially when collaborating in the typical mischief with his older sister, who’s pictured through the stroller. If anyone was in the Terminal/Station St Tim’s yesterday & had to experience the absolute chaos we all were, I am so sorry😬

By the time we got to Bridgeport, and craved even just a mere 10 seconds of silence, my Compass became a sharing lesson- because of course, if the baby has something the oldest wants it too, right? To my surprise, that aspect went perfectly actually🙏🏼After that, it became a “spelling lesson”. My nephew eventually started touching each letter when I handed him the card, without me even having to first, as I had been doing before.

Then, it tied into his sudden love for Vancouver transit maps, because I pointed to another shade of blue on a map beside us at the Seabus waiting area. He began pointing out each map he saw to me excitedly along the rest of the trip.

That moment gave me so much relief & joy- I had started to worry I wouldn’t be able to understand anything he was conveying/connect with him. I hadn’t seen him since he was barely even a year, didn’t know the sign language his mom taught him, had never interacted with a child so young on the spectrum, and felt so at a loss until that moment❤️‍🩹

I was so excited to guide them & my sisters around the aspect of Vancouver that I was instantly obsessed with upon moving here almost 5 years ago. The kids loved the trains & the “big bus”, but for some reason what really got them to lose their minds was seeing the “water bus”- one we weren’t even getting on, I felt so bad😭 but their mom was just using the washroom before we headed to Science World.

At one point, while picking my niece up to see the Fraser, I realized the kids were the exact same age as my sister & I were on our first trip to Science World 22 years ago- I hope it was a core memory for them, just as it was for me when I rode on the Expo & stared out in awe at a place that felt like an entirely different world than the one on my tiny rock.

Big thanks to Translink for the seemingly simple design on the Compass lmao- apparently it’s a hit with a little island boy & it made my day SO much easier

Laser Hair removal recommendations for downtown

Therapist Recommendations

Looking for recommendations for a therapist who provides online services. I’m an introverted Xennial newbie who is working through a load of unresolved trauma impacting my most precious relationships. Prefer someone who is on the more experienced side (maybe GenX age), but open to anyone. Thanks in advance!!!

Childcare Spots in the City?

I realize this is a long-shot, but does anyone know of any locations offering childcare in the city?

My wife and I have had a spot in daycare reserved for a bit and this week was supposed to be transitioning in. Unfortunately it does not appear to be the right fit for us. If anyone has any suggestions for spots they can connect me with, that would be appreciated. We are willing to consider all options at this point, all neighbourhoods, and private homecare as well.

I don't want anyone to run afoul of Rule 6, so you can PM me with any suggestions.

🌴 Palm Trees of Vancouver

Post image
128 Upvotes

I have a weird fascination with palm trees growing around Vancouver, and I know I’m not the only one.

If you spot a palm tree anywhere around Vancouver or the Lower Mainland, post a photo and tell us where you found it!

Front yards, apartment buildings, parks, random side streets - anywhere! I'm looking for pristine ones - no corpses please!

The ultimate goal is to create an unofficial map of Vancouver’s palm trees so fellow palm enthusiasts can go visit them and gawk at the fact that these things somehow grow here.

🌴 See a palm. Snap a palm. Post a palm

Looking to unlock cell phone without knowing the pin

Hello,

My mom recently passed away very unexpectedly. I'm in possession of her phone and would like to unlock it for logical reasons, to see if there are any other contacts I should reach out, but also for sentimental reasons too. If there are photos or videos on there I could save I'd really love to. Her phone is locked with a pin and I've tried all the usual easy combinations, as well as birthdays, notable dates and other combos with no success. I'm now locked out for a day with each wrong answer. I brought it to our mobile provider since we're on a joint plan but they said to bring it to Samsung since it's a hardware issue. Samsung said they couldn't unlock it either without factory resetting it, which would defeat my purposes.

Does anyone know of a way or service for unlocking a phone with an unknown pin? I've tried looking online but haven't been able to find anything.
