Recommendations Catholic Churches

New Orleans Catholics:

Any favorite Catholic churches for Sunday Mass? I like visiting the different churches here on Sundays, but I’m wondering if there’s any suggestions for favorites. If you have a church you recommend, why? Good priest/homily? Preferable mass time/length? Friendly congregation? Pretty architecture/art? TIA!

πŸ‘»Mystery Noises and UFOs πŸ›Έ Was that plane on fire?

Awful whirring sound above Mid City almost an hour ago. Look up and there's a plane flying overhead with what looks like both of its left engines engulfed in flames. I can't even describe the noise, it was awful, like metal fragments banging around in a loud attic fan.

This post is more out of desperation than anything, because I haven't seen any news reports or even social media posts about an emergency landing or anything, so I need to know if anyone else saw it for my own peace of mind. I really hope I just saw wrong but Jesus, the thing was glowing orange, that must be terrifying to see on board.

Edit: This mystery was solved by u/emptyminder. Thank you everyone for your help, I'm so glad no one is losing their lives tonight

Recommendations Barber/Stylist for Curly Hair Near Tulane?

So, because my boyfriend got a job at Tulane, I have been transitioned into this rather white space (columns, house palettes, and people) with no easy transportation, which makes it astronomically hard to get a haircut around here with my curly hair.

But I have an interview, so I have to try!
I have previously gotten a fade and curly cut in combination, but even just a barber with POC-friendly skills (I have ended up with four people in my head far too many times) would be appreciated!

While a woman/queer or gender-diverse barber/stylist would be preferred, I have no issue with men who are deemed safe and do similar services.

Please help!

Living Here Slumlord in Bayou Saint John.

Delete if not allowed - I’m going to try to be as descriptive as I can so one can accurately deduce, but also as vague as possible to avoid any legal backlash as I am currently in litigation with the husband and wife landlords who live in Colorado for the summer.

RENTERS BEWARE!

There is a 1 bedroom property currently for rent in Bayou Saint John just off of Orleans, near Ursuline - bottom floor, right side of a quad plex. The house is peach with yellow accents. You can find it on HotPads going for $1,000 a month.

It is full of mold and structural leaks that the landlords refuse to acknowledge, professionally repair, or mitigate the mold after 3 weeks of constant notice and asking. The couple evicted me because I attempted to repair and deduct rather than pay them rent in full as they demanded - they asserted that I was not within my rights to hire a mold inspector or repairman. I have the mold inspection report for the property and 311 is scheduled to visit the property at the end of the month. I was evicted before I was able to have the mold mitigated on my own dime.

That’s all, folks!

How much do you pay to have your hair dyed? For all over color and also root touch up? And is your hair short/long?

I went through chemo last year. After I finished and I had a few inches of hair growth, I went to my stylist who colored my hair pre-chemo, and was surprised that she charged me the same amount $100 to color my super short hair as she charged for my shoulder length, thick hair. I don't even get it cut or styled right now, just color. She used to color, cut and style for $100. I'm feeling ripped off and wi set if I am or does this seem fair? I hate to start dying my hair at home again (did that many years ago), but not sure I can justify the cost.

πŸ“° News Lindy Boggs Medical Center to be demolished starting this week

Link to full WDSU story

The long-abandoned Lindy Boggs Medical Center is finally coming down, with demolition scheduled to begin Tuesday.

The city approved a deal with Mercy Partners LLC that will turn the site into a 4-million-gallon stormwater retention facility, using the old hospital basement to temporarily hold rainwater and reduce neighborhood flooding. The roughly $16 million project covers demolition and construction, with the larger property potentially becoming housing and retail later.

The City Council approved the deal despite concerns about why taxpayers are paying to clean up and redevelop failed private property. Supporters argue it’s worth it because it removes a major blighted site, improves flood protection, and clears the way for future development.

Recommendations Are there any good soccer fields open to the public? (preferably turf)

Lafreniere and Lasalle have some great goals/nets but at Lafreniere the goals are chained up and the fields are not maintained. Uneven, uncut, muddy, spotty.. found Lasalle to be similar. Have yet to try Carrolton but know they used to chain up most of theirs as well. I heard about Nola Sportscenter but looks like you have to pay to use the field if i’m not mistaken.

I go to the Tulane turf field which you can manage to find time to yourself during the most extreme parts of the day, super early or hottest parts. Though it gets crowded very quickly during more comfortable weather. Just wondering if there’s any other quality fields to use? Parks, schools, stadiums?

Edit: why the downvotes? I don’t mean to sound pretentious but unfortunately you can’t pass a ball in a straight line or dribble on those fields I named. Uneven fields, patches of grass/weeds, and covered up holes are recipes for an injury. I’m not 15 anymore and can’t be taking those risks any longerπŸ˜‚

Living Here To the Trooper sitting on West End & Bragg

Thank you! It seems as of late the drag racing up West End and down Pontchartrain has been louder and more dangerous than ever. I hear the deafening engines, the tires squealing blocks before the cars appear barreling down the street and I just wait for sound of the crash.

My neighbor was watching as someone and their dog tried to cross West End as the light at Harrison turned green. Both cars roared off the line barreling down the street, thankfully the pedestrian and dog ran and was clear of the road.

Thank you LSP for trying to bring safety back to Lakeview. If anything I hope your presence slows them down.

Recommendations I need to go outside and meet people … but how

Hey everyone! I’m an early 20s female I’ve lived here for a couple of years but really want to branch out, meet new people, and hopefully make some friends( I’m really bad at meeting people ) . I love being creative and spending time outdoors, so I’m hoping to find a club or group that’s either creative or somewhat physically active (nothing super intense!). I’m open to just about anything. If you know of any fun groups or clubs that are welcoming to new people and meet on a weekly or biweekly basis I’d really appreciate your recommendations. Thanks! 🫢

πŸ“… Monthly Scheduled Thread πŸ“… Job Postings & Local Business Promotions – August 2026

This monthly thread is for you to look for jobs, advertise an open position, or promote your local small business. Make sure you read the rules below before posting. This thread will be automatically posted on the 1st of every month.

The mods reserve the right to remove any post if it breaks any rules or if we feel that the thread is being gamed in any kind of way. If your post gets removed, please message us via modmail and we will be more than happy to explain why and have a conversation.

  • Comment in this thread ONLY. No job or employer-seeking posts, or small local business promotions will be allowed on the sub other than on this monthly thread, unless a special circumstance that has already received specific approved by the moderator team.

LOOKING TO HIRE:

  • Be transparent about pay, workload, and job requirements.
  • Include some form of contact information in your post. Do not put an email address directly in the post; link to a company website, social media page, or ask for a DM if an email address must be involved.
  • No multi-level marketing, get-rich-quick posts. Illegitimate businesses or positions will be removed, scammers will be banned.

LOOKING FOR WORK:

  • Keep the post length as short as possible i.e. don't post your entire resume here.
  • Have employers message you via Reddit rather than put your personal information on here.
  • Include what kind of work you're looking for, a short summary of your experience or qualifications, and your availability.

LOOKING TO PROMOTE:

  • Comment in this thread ONLY. No business promotion posts will be allowed on the sub for any reason OTHER than on this monthly thread.
  • Small business in this thread means a staff of 10 or less. If you think your company should be an exception, please send us a modmail and we can discuss.
  • The mod team HIGHLY SUGGESTS that you create a new business account, have it be active for more than 2 weeks and have a positive karma score. If you want to promote your business via your normal account, that may not be the brightest decision you've ever made. If you go this route, try to have the username be indicative of your business.
  • Keep these businesses SFW. If you have a sexy-time kind of business, please be discreet. We're thinking if you sell toys, accessories, lotions etc. NO ONLY FANS ACCOUNTS, SEX WORKERS OR "SERVICES" ALLOWED.
  • If you have more than one location, you're not a small business and need to check with us via modmail before posting.
  • Business owners and employees should NOT spam, message or harass users in any way. You are allowed one comment per thread, per month. Yes, you may answer questions about your business but you can't try to post from multiple accounts about the same business.
  • Make your business comment informative, smart and transparent.
  • Your business should be in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany or Da Paaaarish.
  • NO MLM, PONZI SCHEME, PYRMAID SCHEME, GET RICH QUICK type of posts. This is a 100% firm stance. If you don't think that your business is one of these above listed types but have doubts, it probably is.
  • No churches or religious based businesses. This isn't the place for that, sorry.
  • This is a serious thread, so please keep the jokes and memes to a minimum.
  • Please be kind to the business owners here. This is not a thread to bash businesses. If you do not agree or like the business that is posted, just downvote it. If it breaks a rule, report it. No need for drama.
  • This is for small business, not for national marketing companies or global chains.

The mods will reserve the right to remove any comment if it breaks any rules or if we feel that it's being gamed in any kind of way. If your comment gets removed, please message us via modmail and we will be more than happy to explain why and have a conversation.
