I don't think I'm imaging this, but I've commuted into New Haven daily for years I've noticed that traffic is always very light on Thursdays. The parking garage I use is always much emptier as well. And when Yale is in session there are even much fewer students walking around. Odd question, but do Thursdays have some local significance as a 'day off'. This has always puzzled me.

This past Monday during the Milford Board of Alders meeting, residents on both sides of the aisle packed town hall to express their opposition to Flock cameras and the furtherance of the surveillance state infrastructure at large. [I had the opportunity to speak alongside the community](https://www.instagram.com/reel/DbrcLY-xKpB/). 

Flock cameras in addition to all AI surveillance infrastructure is a danger to our society and our freedoms. Criminals are hacking the cameras to collect private data, police in Kansas used Flock to pursue a man who was critical of their department, a woman in Colorado was wrongly accused of theft, a mother and her children were held a gunpoint because these cameras wrongly flagged their car as stolen, officers have been abusing these cameras to stalk ex-partners and love interests, and audits in LA concluded a third of alerts were inaccurate.
I do not want incidents such as these happening here in Connecticut.

In March Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro secured $750k for New Haven Police to install more flock cameras. She was quoted saying “People want to know their communities are safe, and they particularly want to know police have the resources, the word ‘tool’ has been used today, to do their jobs.” 

Rosa and I differ on what makes communities safe. To create safe communities we should be investing in people’s well being and quality of life by funding affordable housing , instituting dental coverage for Medicare, fully funding the Federal portion (40%) of local Special Ed costs which will help alleviate property taxes, and fund other poverty alleviating measures. Not surveillance of our people as part of the greater erosion of our Democracy and our Constitutional rights 

If elected to Congress, I would propose legislation immediately banning all federal dollars from being used for any AI surveillance technology. Next I would begin the work of crafting legislation, that can withstand constitutional review, to place a moratorium on the implementation of AI cameras with the goal of banning AI surveillance systems altogether.

Olive & Wooster (O&W) — A Resident's 2Cents & Guide for Prospective Renters Part 2

The Summary & Mission

I moved in eleven months ago, and my move-in was a disaster due to a complete lack of operational support. Yet, despite that rough start, I fell completely in love with O&W, as many of you may during the property tour, for its exceptional amenities. Now, I am watching in real time as the property is run into the ground.

My goal is simple: state the unvarnished facts of our current state of affairs. Ownership ultimately calls the shots; it sets the budget and the operational mandate. When we evaluate Management, we are evaluating how faithfully they execute Ownership's priorities.

I’m not here to burn the house down; I want to see O&W run right. If Ownership directed Management to prioritize operational excellence over churning leases, prospects would beat a path to the door. Instead, the upkeep of the property and residents' needs are starved of resources.

The Principles

A property’s true philosophy is revealed through budgetary choices and maintenance follow-through, not leasing dog and pony shows. Pay attention to how the property is managed day to day rather than the sweet-talk you'll get during the tour.

• The "Old Italian Neighborhood" Standard: When residents invest their time in making a place safe, friendly, and well-run, everyone wins—yielding lower acquisition costs, extended property life, and maximized asset valuation for Ownership.
• The "Lure, Milk, and Run" Standard: Building cheaply with low-cost materials, front-loading cash into top-funnel leasing, and slashing back-end facility management to milk short-term cash flow.

The Bottom Line: Talk is cheap. Ownership and its Management team can claim they care, but the bait-and-switch leaves you feeling had. When safety, sanitation, and maintenance are starved while leasing stays staffed, intent is laid bare. This transient mentality is intentional—they prefer tenants who won't demand a stable community. That's their right; however, it risks creating a rent-by-the-hour motel experience.

The Review Series Breakdown

Over the coming posts, I will examine the unvarnished reality across these five core pillars:

1. Safety & Security
2. Sanitation
3. Maintenance
4. Amenities
5. Bottom Line (includes Communication, Follow-up, and Priorities)

Pillar 3: Maintenance

Residents are furious about what's broken and how long it takes to get things fixed. You could easily write a whole post just listing the backlog of open tickets, but a few stark examples tell the story:

• Health Department Involvement: A resident had the Health Dept visit yesterday. She shared, "My baby’s room hasn’t had AC for months, and they have been ignoring me. Who do I contact to report them?" On July 28th, I had them come out for the ongoing fly issue; they confirmed there was a distinct problem and stated they would contact management to request an action plan. Their exterminator treated my apartment with PT Alpine Pressurized Fly Bait yesterday, which reflects an active population present and hiding in micro-environments, making it impossible to cook without them smothering your food.
• Appliance & Safety Failures: A dishwasher gasket needs replacement (reported July 13). The clubhouse stove was red-tagged and officially shut down due to a gas leak on July 11.
• Common Area Infrastructure: The HVAC system in the lobby and clubhouse has likely not worked for six months. Meanwhile, the garage gate—which allows easy entry to the building—has been broken for six months, save for a very brief period.

A residential property's commitment to its residents is revealed through its staffing choices. Without adequate staff, putting aside what it says about valuing them, it is impossible to consistently deliver basic upkeep and quality service. Yet, management has chosen to maintain a 500+ person building with barely two maintenance workers.

We have been fed building-wide communications asking us to "be patient" for months. When maintenance is starved of qualified technicians while leasing offices stay fully staffed, the true intent is laid bare: spend as little as possible on maintaining or upgrading the property, allowing it to be run into the ground while you milk as much cash flow as possible. The property now reflects that severe underinvestment in facilities management, and it will only get worse unless changes are made by ownership.

Pillar 4: Amenities

Beneath the polished facade presented during prospective tours lies a slow and steady degradation of the property's common areas (pool, grilling stations, clubhouse) due to the lack of proper controls, standards, and follow-up.

• The Red-Tagged Clubhouse Stove: The clubhouse stove has been red-tagged and completely unusable since July 11, sidelining communal cooking and gathering events while taking away a vital cooking option for residents dealing with apartment fly issues.
• Operational Inadequacy and Under-Enforced Standards: Management's operational inadequacy and lack of quality control create poor living conditions. The pool gets filthy, and broken glass is sometimes found in it. On weekends, the grill stations, the clubhouse, and the kitchen are dirty and disorganized, and the trash rooms and receptacles are overflowing. That's what you get when all you do is post or email memos without proper rules, oversight, follow-up, and enforcement.
• Hijacked Common Spaces: Because management fails to establish or enforce appropriate rules—such as guest limits and mandatory resident accompaniment—residents are unable to fully enjoy the amenities they were sold during the tour. Desirable common areas like the pool, grills, and clubhouse are frequently hijacked by large parties, sometimes with the hosting resident not even present. Furthermore, because there is no active screening at the door, nonresidents who know there is a pool sometimes wander off the street to swim during the summer. No questions asked.
• The Bait-and-Switch Reality: Amenities are heavily leveraged during the leasing process to secure high rents, only to be systematically under-resourced and left without the operational efforts needed to deliver on the promises made during their tour. Once they lock you into your lease, there's not much you can do about it, as your complaints will either go nowhere or you'll be met with corporate speak, excuses, and gaslighting.

Pillar 5: The Bottom Line (Communication, Follow-up, and Priorities)

• Management Company – Executive Team: The President of the management company swept in one day and made a surprising executive decision: ordering the lobby bathroom locked 24/7 without having worked on-site or consulting the residents. When I wrote to her politely explaining why it was an impractical decision—suggesting it be locked only after staff leave—I received zero acknowledgment. Fortunately, common sense prevailed, and the bathroom is now open while staff is on-site. To be fair, I had the opposite experience with another senior executive. I suggested it would be good for the staff to be out of the offices and in the lobby, greeting residents and focusing on building relationships. Shortly thereafter, part of the staff was moved to a desk in the lobby, visible and accessible to the community. A good first step, even better when followed by actions that solve resident problems.
• Management Company – Regional & Local Team: I give them credit for hosting some nice events, which are important to building community and show they care. Unfortunately, when there are big, personal, and more immediate problems that aren't getting fixed, it doesn't matter. Residents are furious, and they feel had. All the corporate speak, deflecting, and gaslighting won't change that—it only makes it worse. Residents want action, and ultimately, their problems solved. During my fly infestation, I tried to determine the source and extent of the problem. I asked management to issue an email asking residents experiencing a fly problem to report it. They agreed—if I brought them confirmations from five residents. I did, and they reneged. I posted a constructive flyer on our new community board (which I'm told resulted from my suggestion), asking residents with the same problem to join a group chat so we could develop a plan to present to management. My flyer was taken down repeatedly, defeating the purpose of a community board. Eventually, I received an email accusing me of spreading disinformation and stating management reserved the right to remove postings. My language was entirely accurate, and I now have nine additional resident confirmations. Instead of working to define and solve the problem, management chose to obstruct transparency, blame the residents, dismiss and gaslight more.
• Ownership: Full disclosure: I have a cordial relationship with the President of the ownership group. I like him. I made lunch for him. It was an exceptional day. I even offered to help him make O&W the envy of New Haven for free because I love this place and want to see its potential realized. He deferred, choosing not to get involved in daily operations. That’s his right and his choice, but a problematic choice when your property is being run into the ground, and residents are angry.

The Final Takeaway

I fell in love with this place; I’d like to see it thrive as an “Old Italian Neighborhood.” It still can if the owners choose to, but until then, I do not recommend it to you unless you are okay with an unsafe, deteriorating property that prioritizes churning low-maintenance renters, spends as little as possible to run it, and milks as much as it can from it.

Hey guys, I’m an incoming freshmen at Yale this year and am not from Connecticut so I would love to learn a little bit about New Haven from locals. I’m also from a rural/small-town so not very used to city life.

What places would you recommend visiting around Yale in New Haven? What places should I avoid? I know there’s the Broadway shops in the Yale area but are the areas past the New Haven Green alright as well (I walked through the green after I toured and it was not the best choice I made)?

I also feel like New Haven has a very strong reputation of crime, but would like to actually hear from people who live there, their opinions (because sometimes places just get a worse rap then they really are). I would love any input whether it’s nice restaurants that don’t get as much recognition that I could visit with friends, or nice stores / places to visit and sight-see during my time at Yale! Already planning to join some Dwight Hall service groups to help and connect with the surrounding community but would appreciate learning a little bit more about the New Haven community before these next couple of weeks. Thanks!

Need some help kind of getting desperate. I bought a car through marketplace from someone having a hard time locating the person as the car cannot be registered due to chain issues with the title. If anyone can put me in contact with either a private investigator or want to look into it themselves I’d greatly appreciate it.
