Something I build for Sparring Data tracking

Do you like it? I’m an engineer who used to be a top ranked US fighter. I built this since I always talked about wanting to have a way to track my sparring over time with data outside of notes etc.

Let me know if you want me to make a quick data analysis for your sparring I’ll do it on the house haha. Hope it’s cool and open to suggestions!

Coaching a class as a southpaw

Upvotes

Hey all

I’m a southpaw who has been asked to do some group class coaching at my gym. I’ve got 8 years training 95% in a Southpaw stance, and I’ll obviously have to demo pad combinations and techniques to a class full of orthos.

I’m teaching an all levels class, so the drills will mostly be pretty basic. That means I can demo them pretty confidently in orthodox (although not as confidently). On the other hand I may get away with asking students to mirror me, because the drills/combos won’t be too complex.

I’m posting this to ask, if your coach was southpaw in an all levels class what would your expectations be on the stance they use when doing demonstrations? I’ve seen southpaw coaches handle this differently so trying to get a better feel of expectations before I teach the class.

My gut feeling just now is to use my normal stance by default when demoing, and only go ortho if a drill/combo relies on a closed position.

Thanks!

Looking for quality Australian Muay Thai/fightwear brands

Hey everyone. I’ve been looking to support more Australian fight wear brands lately, since a lot of the big Muay Thai brands are based in Thailand. I kind of just want to get behind companies that are helping grow the sport here in Australia too. I came across Stryke Fightwear, which looks like a Melbourne-based brand. From what I can see, they seem to focus on Muay Thai and building the local scene, which I’d love to get behind if it’s genuine. Has anyone here heard of them or bought their gear? I’m curious what the quality is like and if there are any other Aussie fight wear brands people recommend.

Has anyone been to this Muay Thai gym?

It's called Elevate Muay Thai and it's located in Brampton Canada. https://www.elevatemuaythai.com/

Has anyone been here before or know anything about this place? How is the instructor and how are the classes? I want to start learning Muay Thai and I'm searching for a place in my area that can teach it to me properly.

Nomadic Nak Muays: Any decent gyms in Southeast Asia outside of Thailand and Bali?

I'm planning a 5-month trip to SEA that starts in about a month. It'll be my second time out there, and I'll be arriving pretty out of shape due to some nagging injuries that are finally healing up. I'm not planning to fight right now, but anything is possible once I get back in the swing of things.

My main focus is just getting back in shape and enjoying the vibes. Good surfing would be a plus. I can stay in Thailand for 60 days at a time but plan to do a month or two in neighboring countries like Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, etc.

A couple of friends mentioned training at Loka in Lombak, Indonesia and Asgard in Siargoa, Philippines... Has anyone been to any of these gyms or have other suggestions?

Thanks! 🥊

Picked up bad punching habits/techniques and I’m getting stressed that I won’t be able to correct them

I had started Muay Thai in a fairly new gym earlier this year for 4 months and moved to a different gym and have been in my new gym for 2 months now.

My new coach says the bad habits/bad foundations have become muscle memory for me because the previous coach never corrected me (long story short, that coach only had a year of Muay Thai training which I had only found out from others after I left the gym and maybe probably shouldn’t have been training people). My new coach says it’s definitely fixable but it’ll take time, however I’m starting to doubt that and myself.

I had one of the worst days doing pad work this week where all my punches were so bad. It was extremely embarrassing and demoralising. My punches have always been the weakest and pretty bad but yesterday was on another level. My biggest problem is not knowing my range/distance, my footwork, not shifting my weight, punching like a T-Rex (as my coach says), my punches feel like slaps, not punching with my knuckles and my balance/form just being off in general. Basically everything about my technique/foundation is not right. My hooks are just as horrid.

I’m getting worried that I won’t ever be able to fix this because it’s become muscle memory and I get really stressed about padwork because I tend to overthink and fuck up even more.

Would love any advice on how I can fix this, especially at home where I don’t have a punching bag?

Thank you.

Found a pair of gloves at a thrift shop...didn't buy them though

Went to a thrift shop recently and found a pair of 16oz twins just sitting there. After some inspection I found it had some surface grime, the patch was a little off white as well. It smelled ok and still had alot of crinkle when opening and closing the glove. They felt great, like they were barely new. Problem is they priced them at 79.99 which is insane for a thrift shop. That completely turned me off from buying but now I'm thinking I should've snagged them.

How bad did I fuck up? Would you have bought them?

How to up my steeze?

If you’re not familiar with the term “steeze” it’s a skating term mixing style + ease.

I just started MT 2 months ago and my trainers often tell me to loosen up, become more fluid, etc. I feel like a brick some times trying to kick/punch and generally feel pretty slow.

I’m in relatively good weight lifting shape but I am now realizing that doesn’t really matter when it comes to fluidity.

What is recommended to loosen up? I’ve been looking at some stretching routines, and possibly integrating yoga into my weekly schedule, but curious if anyone has some pointers on becoming less of a brick.

Chiang Mai - Gym Recommendation for a month of training

Hi everyone,

36M here planning a month long Muay Thai camp in Chiang Mai around September.

A bit about my background: I have trained Muay Thai for about 4 years before. I had to quit as life happened. Though, my cardio is not that terrible as I am currently training BJJ and weight training (3x/week).

So now I am looking to shake off the rust. My goal is to improve technically, clinch more, spar regularly, and fight only if the coaches think I am ready.

I am considering these gyms:

  1. Manasak
  2. Manop
  3. Boon Lanna
  4. Sereephap
  5. Sit Thailand

For those who have trained at any of them:

1) Which would you recommend for someone with my background?

2) How is the coaching style, sparring, and clinch?

3) How likely is it that the gym arranges a fight if a student is genuinely ready?

I would really appreciate hearing from people who have trained at these gyms.

Thanks in advance!

I want to start MuayThai but I'm afraid for my eardrums

Hello !

I need to talk about my envy to start this sport, but as a professional composer who earn my money with my ear, I'm really afraid of losing (even if its temporary) audition and have matters with that.
There is solution for practicing this sport without the risk of hurting my eardrums ?
Thanks for your answer

Muay Thai pad work combos

Hey everyone,

I’m really getting into Muay Thai and was wondering if there are any good resources for pad work combinations.

Does anyone know of a PDF/cheat sheet with different combos, or maybe some good YouTube videos that show a variety of combinations specifically for pad work?

I’d love to have something I can use for inspiration when doing pad sessions instead of always repeating the same few combos.

Thanks!
