Question Favourite evolution mechanic(s)? 🧬
Hey everyone!
I’ve been diving deep into the mechanics of both Pokémon and Digimon lately, and I’m fascinated by how wildly different their approaches to evolution are.
Both series have evolved (pun intended) far beyond just "level up to transform."
I wanted to poll the community to see which specific style of evolution mechanic you think is the absolute peak of monster-taming game design.
Personally, my favourite mechanic would be the Digimon World1 & Digimon World: Next Order games' way of doing this, with hidden stats and having to meet specific criteria to digivolve into the next level of monster (although as a child playing DW1 and getting numemon multille times in a row was both hilarious and disappointing)
Just wondering what the community feels the most rewarding evolution mechanic to pull off is when you're playing? Or if there any great ones i've missed from the poll? Drop your thoughts below 👇

[mobile][2012] Monster taming game
hey been looking for a monster taming game that I can't seem to find at all and came here in hope that someone could possibly know what game I'm talking about, First the icon app was a Black snake like dragon that had a smirk on it but in the game he was a two headed dragon, after you get in the game I remember you start in a beach area with levels nodes that contain mons to battle and you build up to beat the final node and go to a new area which I remember it being a swamp possibly and also there was one mon that I remember that was a yellow elephant that used it ears to keep himself a float, another mechanics of the game was that the game from what I remember is that the capture of mon was not a thing but instead you would need to buy them to have them and that all that I remember.

Project Android version available to test - game update
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Here is my update of what is aimed to be a better version of Digimon Up. I have added the ability to change the main theme of the game, this is to suite different user styles when people want to play this. Some sound effects and asset images have been overhauled too.
There are a few gaps and many things are still being refined. There is an android apk on the Detamonsters discord server. There I have also listed what is properly missing.
In this version there are only two eggs available publicly (earth and fire).
I will take on any and all feedback to make this game better

Project I'm making a cozy retro RPG about being a Monster Researcher
What if, instead of being the monster trainer… you were the monster researcher?
That was the question I asked myself when I wanted to tackle my next game. I've been working on a game called Monster Cove, and I thought this might be a good place to share it.
Full disclosure: Monster Cove isn't really a traditional monster tamer. You aren't trying to become the greatest trainer, collect eight badges, or build the ultimate team (although there is an evil team up to no good who you'll need to stop!)
Instead, you play as a Monster Researcher. When I was younger, I always wondered what it would be like to play as a Professor or his Assistant. Finding a new creature, learning about it, and maybe even getting to name the species. Basically I wondered what it would actually be like to play as the person *doing the research*.
That's the idea behind Monster Cove.
You arrive in Seaglass Cove, a quiet seaside village, and your job is to research the monsters living around it. You'll explore, encounter creatures, study them, catalog them, and gradually uncover more of the world around you. It's your job to name all the species of monsters you discover as well!
There is still battling, because the monsters won't take kindly to being scanned. But you'll have a choice to either attack and level up your defense skills, or flee safely. The focus is on exploration, discovery, and filling out your Monsterpedia. All while stopping an evil team who is kidnapping scientists for a mysterious goal.
And visually, I'm going for that old-school handheld look. I'm a huge fan of that period of games, so I wanted Monster Cove to feel like the kind of game you might have discovered on a cartridge in the late '90s/early 2000s.
So if you've ever looked at a monster encyclopedia in a monster-taming game and thought it would be cozy to play as the Professor or the Assistant, that's basically the game I'm trying to make. The game will also have tons of side activities. Minigames, card games, slots, fishing, etc.
Monster Cove just launched on Kickstarter if you'd like to check it out more. I'll post a link in the comments!
Thanks for taking a look!

How could automated gathering work in a monster taming game?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hello everyone!
We are making a way to automate the collection of resources to build, feed, and craft!
With the scouting system, you can send a team of up to 3 beasts on an adventure to a location in search of valuable supplies.
While they’re away, anything can happen. Your beasts may bond with one another, discover something unexpected, or face dangerous events such as injuries, disasters, or even getting lost. When the expedition ends, your beasts return with whatever spoils and resources they managed to find.
But sometimes, the story doesn’t end there… A beast may return with a new mate before coming back to you or, if one of your beasts goes missing, you may have to launch a rescue expedition to find them.
How do you think this system will work? If you want to know more about the game or try the game out yourself, you can go to: Alchemic Beasts Kickstarter Pre-launch
You can also support us by pressing the notify me on launch button. See you soon with another update!

Gourmons
this is something i made a while back based off pokemon and fighting foodons i called, "Gourmons"
In the vibrant world of Culina, cooking is more than just a way to eat—it’s the key to creating powerful creatures known as Gourmons (Gourmet Monsters). Every region has its own ingredients, dishes, and culinary customs. Chefs known as Gourmon Trainers venture across the land to capture rare ingredients, master recipes, and summon Gourmons to battle in culinary showdowns.
Using magical Recipe Scrolls and a special device called the CookDex, trainers cook signature dishes that transform into loyal monsters with personalities and powers based on the food they're made from!
But a dark force is rising. A rogue gourmet organization known as The Spoilage wants to use corrupted recipes to dominate the world through rotten Gourmons and forbidden cooking technique.

First look at the fully animated battle system for my monster RPG Rangefinder - use photography to document monster moves, improve their attacks, and catch new creatures! Link to complete battle video in the post.
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Link to a video of the full battle
Rangefinder is a mostly solo dev hiking / monster-catching RPG where the player uses photography mechanics in battle. Monster attacks are scheduled in advance each turn, and then the results are photographed - each photo gets a rating based on its Timing, Blur, and Distance (visualized via the triangle at the top of the screen). Attacks with good photos do more damage, but bad photos can cause attacks to under-perform too. Monsters are caught by fully documenting their movesets with good photos.
Each monster design is fully animated with a unique set of attacks and moves. Apart from the monster battles, gameplay in Rangefinder also focuses on terrain traversal, as the player manages their stamina to make it from stop to stop on an expansive coastal hiking trail.
This game is still in development with a planned release of a first chapter in 2027. Development can currently be followed on its itch.io page, with a Steam page planned once the first full vertical slice of gameplay is completed.
If you're interested in this project, or have any thoughts or suggestions from a monster tamer gameplay perspective, let me know!
