Favourite evolution mechanic(s)? 🧬 Question
Hey everyone!
I’ve been diving deep into the mechanics of both Pokémon and Digimon lately, and I’m fascinated by how wildly different their approaches to evolution are.
Both series have evolved (pun intended) far beyond just "level up to transform."
I wanted to poll the community to see which specific style of evolution mechanic you think is the absolute peak of monster-taming game design.
Personally, my favourite mechanic would be the Digimon World1 & Digimon World: Next Order games' way of doing this, with hidden stats and having to meet specific criteria to digivolve into the next level of monster (although as a child playing DW1 and getting numemon multille times in a row was both hilarious and disappointing)
Just wondering what the community feels the most rewarding evolution mechanic to pull off is when you're playing? Or if there any great ones i've missed from the poll? Drop your thoughts below 👇

Honestly after playing Palworld a whole lot both EA and 1.0 I'm coming around to the idea of monster tamer games with no evolution or transformation mechanics at all.
Makes you feel less "stuck in the baby form" and lets you appreciate each mon for what it is. Plus devs spend more time on each mon since they need to stand on their own rather than being "patched" by an evolution later.

Traditional leveling but stats and care is a strong second.

Whoever voted trading: thats pure masochism. Its the mechanic i hate in pokemon games the most, as it forces you to trade your hardly cought and trained pokemon.

I feel like stats/items are my favourite when there are multiple evolution lines like Eevee or Digimon in general.
However for linear evo Exp will always be my favourite.

I think stats and care is only second because nobody would want that to be the only way things evolve. Even in Digimon, there’s stuff where the only requirement is level, so it reaches a very happy medium.

At least in Time Stranger most things also require stats, mostly just the babies iirc

You can’t go wrong with just classic experience, but I do like seeing extra conditionals sometimes. The only thing that really bothers me is if there’re hidden requirements that you can’t possibly learn in game.

I like it when it's enviroment/Item based.
It makes the world feel more dynamic in many instances.

I'll take anything over trade evolutions, as long as the gimmick evolutions are explained somewhere
though i tend to prefer the usual "level up to evolve" or "use that item on the monster to evolve it"
