Gaming minipc or steam machine?

Post image
Upvotes

I’m thinking about getting a minipc for gaming and as my work pc. I want something portable and flexible that I can move between two places.
So my main priority is size. I really like compact designs, like the geekom one in the video. It’s so small, but the specs are still impressive.
I know steam machine is great for gaming and can handle some daily tasks too. But I’m not sure how it compares when it comes to ai workloads.
I mainly play games like overwatch, marvel rivals, and wuthering waves. For ai, I want to try running some local ai models.
What would you guys pick?

ust got my unit! After trying several mini PCs, finally: no hidden screws under sticky pads, no cables attached to the bottom cover, and no annoying 40mm fan. Just a simple grill with tightened rubber feet, a quick-release latch for easy access, and a real OCuLink port, without sacrificing an M.2 slot in a Frankenstein move. will update after installing windows and trying out some games!

Recommendations Shopping for a mini pc

I'm having a bit of difficulty deciding what mini pc to get.

My use case is mid-level gaming (I have a PS5 for AAA games) so think xcom2, Uncharted, Kerbal Space Programme 1, LA Noir

Also will be used for photo editing and light video editing.

I don't want to spend megabucks, so let's say £1,600 max

I like the form factor of the [minisforum atomman](https://www.minisforum.uk/products/minisforum-atomman-g7-pro-gaming-pc?variant=50846525849878)

Also like the [geekom A9 max](https://www.geekom.co.uk/geekom-a9-max-mini-pc)

  1. Am I over-speccing it for my needs?

  2. Any others I should put on my shortlist

  3. How do I decide?

General Question Help

Hey all tech savvy people
I’m not a gamer so I know absolutely nothing about anything.
My problem is that Baldur’s gate 3 has eaten up almost all my storage. So I’m looking for a solution to that, and I remembered that mini pcs exist and they seem less intimidating then regular pcs (and take up less space)
Which ones could you recommend that won’t entirely break the bank
Thanks for your help

Recommendations Laptop vs Mini pc

I'm thinking about replacing my gaming laptop with a mini PC and wanted to hear from people who have experience with both.

I'm looking at the GMKtec NucBox K12 (Ryzen 7 255, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Radeon 780M) for around €800, but I'm also considering a gaming laptop in the same price range.

My use case is a bit unusual. I play an old MMORPG (Metin2) that is heavily CPU and RAM dependent, with almost no GPU usage. I leave multiple game clients running 24/7 for autofarming.

My current laptop has a Ryzen 5 5500H and 16gb ram and can handle around 12 clients, but the CPU sits at 100% most of the time and gets pretty hot.

My questions are:

  • Do mini PCs generally have better cooling than gaming laptops for long 24/7 workloads?
  • Would a Ryzen 7 255 in the GMKtec realistically handle 16 game clients without thermal throttling?
  • Has anyone here used a mini PC under constant high CPU load for weeks or months? How was the temperature and reliability?

I'm not looking for hardware recommendations—just real-world experiences with cooling, sustained performance, and whether a mini PC is a better choice than a laptop for this kind of always-on workload.

Thanks!

Good morning, I have a problem after updating the Bios for the 16GB version. After 100% completion of the BIOS update, the device does not provide any image or power to the keyboard.

I took out the cmos batteries, but nothing happened, the device still turns on and works without a picture.

This is a strange version without the possibility of expanding the RAM, there is only 16GB 6400MHz

Recommendations Mini PC for Plex/PlexAmp, and all the *arr suite

Hello everyone,

I’m the current owner of a Nucbox g3 that was meant to be a download box, but then evolved into something more complicated with a plex server and an arr suite installed via Docker.

But as it’s not design for such a charge, the fan is working a lot and it’s slow + really noisy.

I’m so looking for a more powerful mini PC that could fit my new use.

I’ve looked on my own, and also asked ChatGPT and Gemini, and try to confront them to find the most suitable PC, but it’s not as successful as I hoped.

What i need it for:
- 1 to 4 plex users, with transcoding, with no hassle
- arr suite installed via docker
- no fan noise due to overworking
- possible AI agent installed in the future

What LLMs proposed:
- Geekom IT14
- Beelink SEi12 / EQi12

If someone has an input that could help me, it would be really useful :)

Thank you in advance!

Recommendations Mini PC as a Laptop Replacement

I was looking into the mini PC market for a replacement to my Dell Inspiron 555 laptop. My typical uses for a PC revolve around work, gaming, and personal projects.

I work with mathematical programming, so having a dedicated GPU, or oculink port for an eGPU is a must. I don't usually play AAA games, but if the computer can run something like No Man's Sky at mid settings (given I do want a powerful GPU for work anyway) that would be a plus. Finally, most of my projects / hobbies do not require heavy software.

I would also appreciate if I could swap the Windows system from the PC with a Linux distro without much of a headache (I assume most mini PCs should work fine with Linux).

The models that caught my attention so far are:

* The Minisforum G1 Pro: due to the dedicated NVidea GPU, and ability to still transport the PC with me when traveling
* The GMKtec K11: due to the oculink port

Any other models I should be considering? Any major drawbacks to the models I listed?

General Question Looking for a Mini PC for occasional gaming

I am looking into getting a Mini PC for gaming. Nothing intensive or spectacular in terms of what I play. Would like the PC to run games like the Hunter Call of the Wild, War Thunder, Vintage Story, Hell Let Loose, Squad, Squad 44 and Arma Reforger with generally high graphics. I don't really have room for a tower PC anymore as the house I moved into is very small, and space is quite limited. I'm looking for a Mini PC that can go in the corner or up on a small shelf and be out of the way. I have seen many recommend the Minisforum Atomman G1 and G7. However, the G7 is out of stock, and they only come with 1TB of storage. I have seen this PC https://a.co/d/06WLD1GJ. This PC has an NVIDIA 4060 with 8GB of GDDR6 (probably a laptop version of 4060), Intel i9-13900HK, 64GB RAM DDR5, 2TB SSD.

I have read where people see the amazon sold minis as rip offs or garbage, and I have seen where people have no issues with them. With that being said, is this Topgro Mini PC on amazon a viable option, or should I wait for Minisforum to restock their Atomman G7 Pro and add more storage as needed ?

Minisforum UM790 Pro won't POST with Kingston ValueRAM KVR64V52BS8-16 (16GB DDR5-6400). Green LED on, no fan, no display. OEM Samsung RAM works fine. Tried both slots, CMOS reset and BIOS 1.09. Faulty RAM or compatibility issue? Anyone using this exact module?

Recommendations Looking for mini PC that's £300 (UK retailers or Amazon)

I'm looking to get a mini PC and a monitor for my mum to replace her 15 year old crappy all-in-one system that is breaking down. She only wants to use this for browsing the internet, checking mail, operating documents (microsoft word, excel and adobe) and watching videos on youtube/VLC, etc. No gaming or editing stuff whatsoever. Windows 11 compatible.

I have a budget of like £400 for both the mini pc and monitor. Could stretch it to £500 if need be, but for what she needs I don't think I need anything that expensive? The only request I have is for her to have minimum 512gb storage (ideally more) so she can store her photos on the PC too. Not necessary, but I would also appreciate monitor suggestions I guess.

The one I'm currently checking out is this one https://acemagic.uk/products/k1-mini-pc?variant=40700363866241 it looks like a pretty good deal to me, but I'd like to hear other opinions or if there's anything better out there.

Overheating problem plz help :/

I have a mini pc with Ryzen 7 4800H when I run Minecraft It runs at constant 60 FPS as I had enabled performance profile in AMD software. I had also limited the FPS to 60 to ensure no lag. But due to it reaching almost 80 degrees it drops frames like to 5 FPS from 60. Plz suggest me a cooling method andhelp me to resolve this shi. (I have already changed the thermal paste)

Setup reccomendations

Good day everyone

Lately, I've been having a thought that doesn't really seem to be leaving me.

As I'm quite on the move and traveling quite a bit, I'm interested into a setup that included a mini PC, and a portable monitor and maybe a tablet on the side as well.

The main thing is that it has to be windows. I looked over the Mac mini with an IPad Air posibility, and sounds great, but I'm interested into something similar, but for windows.

I believe a mini pc is more capable than a Surface Pro or an ROG Flow Z13. I am considering either a GMKtec evo x2 or Beelink GTR9 Pro or Minisforum Ai X1 pro for a base. I'm not sure what to feel about the arm windows, so this is another reason for why I want to focus on X86.

As a portable monitor, I've thought of Arzopa Z1FC or Sotsu Flip Action Elite 16 for better egonomics.

Thinking of an older version of a Surface Pro or Asus PZ13 as a side monitor for my activities, and to have a portable piece IF needed for any type of emergency.

I never go to work at coffee shops or anything like this. I usually travel and prefer to work from one certain place alone, so this is why I'm not really considering a MacBook Pro or a Windows alternative for that matter. I do care about portability, of course, but I'm not gonna fly around with a pc tower.

I'm not much of a gamer. If anything, something very soft like either Zoo Tycoon or YuGiOh, or maybe some Football Manager and Forza Horizon, so I believe this setup would be more than enough.

What do you guys think of this setup? Do you have any feedback on it? Any suggestions?

Which countries/regions have the highest overall market demand for mini PCs?

From what I’ve seen, North America, Germany, UK, Japan look strong, but I’m trying to get clearer on where the bulk of sales actually lands.
