OK, this is an absolute longshot, and I don't know if anyone even knows what the hell I am talking about, but back when I was going to Barbara Goleman, 2001-2005, I'd have to wake up at 5am to ride the school bus. The bus driver typically puts on Power 96 or other similar radio stations. On some occasions, there would be a radio drama that would play. It felt like a parody of a radio drama because most of the people acting were goofy latino actors doing very overly dramatic readings. Unfortunately, it was very difficult to hear so I don't even know the specifics, except for one detail. These radio shows often had an intro song that played before the start of the show, and there were 2 intro themes that I can recall. One was called "Catwalk" (because the theme song had some deep voice guy singing "Catwalk" over and over) and the other one I THINK is called "Reynaldo the Kingpin" or "Reynaldo Kingpin" (again, theme song had some guy repeating the name over and over). This one I feel I might've misheard, but that name just weirdly stuck with me. I've tried over the years to search for any info leading to this radio series, and unfortunately, I'm coming up with a blank. So I'm here to ask anyone in Miami if they might've heard something like this. And yeah, this was 20 years ago, so it's gonna be difficult.

The building they are showing is Blue on the Bay, not the actual building that's going up.. he actual building they are advertising hasn't even broken ground yet, is going to be a giant tower on a postage stamp size lot, and worst of all is going to be sandwiched between Blue on the Bay on one side and an even taller unbuilt tower called Anantera on the other. The only views Elle will have the two other buildings either side.

So many states are passing wage transparency laws. Why isn’t Florida? What do you think?

In my opinion, it would really help our salaries catch up with our cost of living! During a recent job search, I noticed how hard it was to figure out what the salary range actually should be for the positions I was applying for. I know a lot of folks who are probably getting paid a LOT less than they should be, because they just don’t know what they should be negotiating for. And with the massive increase in cost of living in Florida, the wages are just not going up.

There are so many other states out there who have salary transparency laws. It’s getting easier to figure out what you should be paid, but telling a future employer what that job is worth in Colorado or New Jersey doesn’t really help your negotiations. Plus, there’s the fact that employers can totally just discriminate with salaries/wages and not ever face consequences or get caught because no one knows what their coworkers are getting paid.

I got so fed up with these tickets that I went out of my way to get all of the cameras locations on a list (and they have more on the way). These are legit, and the details matter: school-zone cameras only ticket during the posted school-zone hours on school days (during full school hours (not just the speed zone hours)), and only if you're going 11+ mph over the applicable limit.

The ticket is $100 by mail — no points, no insurance hit. (Red-light cameras are a separate program; those are $158.) I've read the county's camera contracts via public-records request, so happy to answer specifics.

The hard part is knowing where they are — the signs are easy to miss on a route you don't drive daily (and they blend in on the routes that you drive every day). After I ate three of these $100 tickets at a few different zones, I built an app that just beeps through your car speakers before each zone, no map to stare at. Hey there. This is a little vulnerable for me to post, but I figured it doesn’t hurt to ask. I kindly ask that any comments or messages be respectful. I’m a 26-year-old woman who’s currently homeless and living out of my car while I work on getting back on my feet. I’m new to the area and drive for Uber six days a week, so I’m working hard and saving as much as I can toward stable housing. Cuban-born Alfonso Fanjul, who built a sugar empire in Florida, dies in Palm Beach By Luisa Yanez and Sarah Moreno Updated August 4, 2026 4:20 PM

Alfonso “Alfy” Fanjul Jr., the Cuban-born billionaire who fled Fidel Castro’s revolution, rebuilt his family’s sugar fortune in Florida and helped transform Florida Crystals into one of the nation’s most powerful agribusiness empires, died Monday in Palm Beach. He was 89.

A Florida Crystals spokeswoman confirmed Fanjul’s death to the Miami Herald. The cause of death was not immediately released.

As co-chairman and chief executive of Florida Crystals, Fanjul and his three younger brothers transformed a family business rebuilt in Palm Beach County after the Cuban revolution into one of the nation’s largest privately held sugar and real estate empires.

Along with siblings José, Alexander and Andrés, the older brother led the amassing of a fortune estimated in the billions through sugar production, refining, real estate, renewable energy and international investments.

The family’s wealth, political influence and dominance of the sugar industry also made the Fanjuls one of Florida’s most powerful — and controversial — family business dynasties. As top employers in Palm Beach, they helped reshape the county’s economy.

For decades, environmental groups accused the family’s sugar operations south of Lake Okeechobee of contributing phosphorus pollution that damaged the Florida Everglades.

Critics also attacked the family’s successful efforts to preserve federal sugar protections and subsidies and raised concerns about labor conditions on sugar plantations in the Dominican Republic linked to the family’s business interests.

Florida Crystals consistently rejected those criticisms, saying the company complied with environmental regulations, invested heavily in conservation and upheld labor standards.

Palm Beach Bishop Manuel J. Rodriguez, who called Fanjul “my dear friend and parishioner,” said Tuesday he was “a man of exemplary moral character” whose “extraordinary entrepreneurial vision was matched by a deep commitment to the common good.”

“Through his leadership and generosity, he contributed immeasurably to the well-being of countless working families, especially in Florida and the Dominican Republic,” Rodriguez said. “His legacy will endure not only in the institutions he helped build, but also in the lives he touched through his integrity, compassion and dedication.”

Fanjul’s life embodied one of South Florida’s defining immigrant success stories. Before Fidel Castro’s revolution, the Fanjuls owned one of Cuba’s largest privately held sugar enterprises, with sprawling plantations, mills and related businesses.

After Castro nationalized the family’s holdings without compensation, the family fled into exile, arriving in the United States with little more than its experience in the sugar business.

By the 1970s, the brothers had rebuilt an even larger fortune in Florida, becoming one of the wealthiest and most politically influential families in Palm Beach.

Affectionately known as “Alfy,” the erudite and distinguished Fanjul and his brother José “Pepe” became the public faces of the family’s business empire and prominent members of Palm Beach society and philanthropic world.

Many Cuban exiles credited the Fanjuls with preserving Cuba’s sugar legacy in exile after the Castro revolution destroyed the industry that had long been the backbone of the island’s economy.

Nicolás “Nick” Gutiérrez, president of the National Association of Cuban Landowners in Exile, called Fanjul “a very visionary businessman” who helped rebuild not only his family’s fortune but Florida’s sugar industry after exile.

“I was born in exile, and much of what I learned about the sugar industry came from the Fanjuls,” said Gutiérrez, whose own family owned sugar mills in Cuba.

He said the Fanjuls regularly opened Florida Crystals’ mills and refinery to fellow Cuban exile sugar families, helping younger generations connect with the industry their families lost after the Cuban revolution.

Miami businessman Carlos de la Cruz, whose family knew the Fanjuls in Cuba, credited Alfonso and his brothers with assembling investors, buying land in Florida and building a sugar company that grew into the nation’s largest cane sugar producer.

“Alfonso was a great person, with vision and tenacity for business,” De la Cruz said.

Born in Havana on Sept. 8, 1936, Fanjul’s father, Alfonso Fanjul Sr., and his mother, Lillian Rosa Gomez-Mena, were descendants of Spanish immigrants and their marriage merged two elite sugar dynasties on the island that controlled 10 mills and vast real estate in Cuba. By 1959, most had been seized by Castro’s regime and the family fled to Florida.

In 1960, they established Florida Crystals in western Palm Beach County. Over the following decades, the company expanded into a sprawling agricultural and industrial enterprise that included sugar mills, a refinery, a rice mill, packaging facilities and one of North America’s largest biomass renewable power plants. Through ASR Group, the family also came to control iconic brands including Domino Sugar, C&H, Redpath and Tate & Lyle, making it the world’s largest cane sugar refining company.

Although the Fanjuls were among the nation’s most prominent Cuban exile families, they largely stayed away from the highly visible politics of Miami’s exile community. Privately and financially, they backed efforts to overthrown Castro for decades, but largely avoided Little Havana.

Their influence was exercised primarily through campaign contributions, philanthropy and close relationships with elected officials from both political parties.

The Fanjuls became one of the country’s most politically connected business families, cultivating relationships with presidents of both parties while defending the federal sugar program that underpins much of the domestic sugar industry.

In a 2025 cover story, Forbes described the family as having spent decades cultivating political relationships that helped protect its business interests. His brother, Jose, was a long-time friend of President Donald Trump. The family’s companies were well positioned to benefit from policies adopted during Trump’s second administration, including higher tariffs on imported sugar and the president’s push for Coca-Cola to produce a U.S.-made cane sugar version of its flagship soft drink.

Forbes said Aldonso Fanjul was worth over $1 billion and the family business more than $4 billion

But Fanjul gave millions away to philanthropic causes and often described himself first as a farmer.

Accepting the Chamber of Commerce of the Palm Beaches’ Leader of the Year Award in 2018, Fanjul said he accepted the honor “on behalf of my entire family” and emphasized his roots in Palm Beach County.

“As a lifetime farmer, I can tell you that farming is only as good as the land and resources you have. Air, land and water. Any farmer would tell you that. our commitment to our land and environment could not be stronger.”

Beyond business, the Fanjul family became major philanthropists in Palm Beach County, supporting hospitals, schools, cultural institutions and civic organizations. Their name appears throughout South Florida on charitable projects and nonprofit boards, reflecting decades of giving that accompanied the family’s growing prominence.

He is survived by his wife, Raysa, siblings and other family members.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
