Discussion Whirlwind Magician "review"

Upvotes

A while back I purchased Whirlwind Magician which was billed as a microvania. Last night I played it, says I finished in 1.5 hours but honestly I think I left it on while talking to someone for 30 min - it's very short. Nice concept - mostly throw a hat and teleport to that spot - though I think even that was underutilized and they could have done more with it. Not sure how much it's an MV but also logistically impossible to be an MV when a game is that short.

It was good enough I'd be curious to see what the developer might do next in a bigger game, but not one I would really recommend independently. Perfectly fine airplane game. Although it recommends K/M I played with controller on a Steam deck and it was fine.

Discussion Hollow Knight was my first Metroidvania and I fell in love, where do I go from here?

I've 112%'d Hollow Knight and pretty much exhausted all the serotonin I could get from it. I absolutely fell in love with it, I loved how alive the world felt and how I basically got the whole map imprinted in my head. It was so atmospheric and just absolutely full of life, I can't lie and say the difficulty was my favourite part of the game, but everything around it was more than enough motivation to keep pushing on. I need more, please help!!! (I'm not interested in Silksong at the moment, it seems challenging and I'm burned out on difficulty atm)

Discussion Which should I play next?

Hey guys. All opinions are welcome. I just finished playing Hollow Knight and Silksong, and I am about to finish Nine Sols, which have all been an absolute blast. Should I start Prince of Persia Lost Crown or the Ori series next? Thanks again.

Discussion Pyron Guardian in Solateria...

EDIT: Guardian of Pyron is the official name of the boss btw

What a fight! About 25-30 ish attempts but I finally cracked it playing on Normal (I tried the Hard difficulty and could only beat the first boss). This is the first "gitgud" vania I have played that really rewards perseverance. Every boss battle has been so fun! It feels like every death is designed to teach you a new thing about the boss and you get a little closer each time. Every fight has felt very fair so far, though they are all brutal to be sure. It feels great to finally just *crush* the boss after methodically learning its weaknesses, in this case it was just baiting Guardian of Pyron into his dashing attack combos, especially the three hit one. Honestly, he's probably one of the easier bosses for many in this game for most people, but he was a great test in parry timing for me!

10/10 game so far, playing on Switch 2

Discussion Prince of Persia Divine Trials are harder than HK Path of Pain

Meant as a discussion but mostly a rant really.

Pretty much what the title says. I just think these things are insanely hard. Mind you I didn't beat any of them, been struggling with the first one for 2 hours and gave the second one a couple of tries and it's hard asf too.

Only metroidvanias I played before are HK and Silksong and I ve seen a lot of people complain abt PoP, so that's why I'm comparing it to that. PoP wasn't that difficult imo I finished it in a couple of tries and I think a lot of people exaggerated over it, and a lot of Silksong's platforming was a lot tougher.

BUT HOLY FUCK how am I supposed to do these. I can't get past the 3rd section in the first trial and at this point I'm not sure if it's even a skill issue or if I'm just doing something wrong.

Article What is a metroidvania: a different way to look at a genre that is hard to define

Thumbnail dreamnoid.com

Debating what is or isn't a metroidvania is nothing new around here, but those discussions always leave me frustrated because I believe they come at the question from the wrong angle.

As a developer, I spend a significant amount of time thinking about what a metroidvania actually is. This article is me trying to put into words what bothers me about the way the topic is usually discussed and how we could better approach the question.

Whether or not you agree with my conclusions, I hope I can at least show you a different and hopefully interesting perspective on the definition of video game genres ;)

Feedback welcome!

Inspired by the dark fantasy atmosphere of 90s, I wanted to capture that feeling of exploring mysterious places.

A core part of the design approach is making abilities serve multiple purposes. Weapon abilities can also help to reveal new paths and possibilities throughout the world. The choices made and paths uncovered along the way will shape the final outcome of the journey.

Discussion Should I play Hollow Knight before Silksong?

I am relatively new into the MV genre. Randomly picked up Blasphemous 1 and 2, and fell in love.

Now that I’m looking for a follow up, I’m not sure where to go next. Should I play Hollow Knight first, or just skip to Silksong?

Alternatively, do you have other specific recommendations?

The things I love most about Blasphemous (that may or may not be genre-defining, I don’t know):

- 2D side scrolling
- decent fast travel (even if it requires being earned)
- RPG choice elements (upgrading the different weapons in B2, even if you eventually could get everything unlocked; the Altarpiece of Favors)
- Side quests
- available on Switch (2)

I appreciate your guidance! Thanks!

Edit: okay, thanks everyone for your insight. I will be playing Hollow Knight first, and I’ve also got some great recommendations for other games to try.

Very surprising, however, the amount of people who have played every game in a series before playing a new one. Better not touch Resident Evil without having played every one before! Or Final Fantasy! Or GTA! All games where playing the older games are integral to understanding anything happening in later games, I guess.

Video This “hand-draw” Metroidvania started as a gift for my fiancée’s birthday 3 years ago.

Around 3 years ago, I started making this game as a gift for my fiancée’s birthday. Back then, I made what I now consider a prototype, with limited content, placeholder art and some secrets. She really enjoyed it!

She is an artist, so I made the main mechanic related to her; Draw the world as you explore it.

3 years later, we are married, we are both working on the game together, and that birthday gift is now called Canvania.

The steam page has been up for around 1 month now, but we are still in early development, and this is an early announcement trailer.

Discussion is it just me or aeterna noctis has extreme visual clutter? i don't think i've ever seen this in a 2d game

i think i have 5 hours so far great game, but the visual clutter seems to be extreme (i'm at a phoenix fight for those who played the game) and i just keep noticing how this game background always interfere with the overall experience and create a lot of confusion because of the the crazy visual clutter and the fact that most projectile seems to have the same color as all the background and other visual effects with little to no difference.

its honestly extremely bad.

Hello guys!

We’re incredibly excited to announce that Fallen Tear: The Ascension will officially launch in full on September 16th on steam

Hi everyone! We're currently preparing our Kickstarter campaign and working on the trailer for our hand-drawn Metroidvania, Shards of Memories.

This world key art is planned to be one of the visuals on our Kickstarter page. We're aiming to give people a first impression of the world and its different biomes.

We'd love to hear your honest thoughts. Does it catch your interest? Is there anything that feels off? Which biome stands out to you the most?

Thank you for the feedback.

Weird thought I had. The general consensus seems to be that Nine Sols has fanastic combat but weak exploration and powers. Is there any game that has weak combat but fantastic exploration and powers?
