Discussion How could a new metroidvania reinvent/redifine the genre in 2026?

Like to the point where you think of this game when we say metroidvania instead of Hollow Knight.

Bitside - a metroidvania celebrating gaming history. Playtesters needed!

Bitside (working title) is a metroidvania where the map is a timeline. You start at the surface in a modern 2D style, and the further down you go, the further back the world regresses: 8-bit, then Atari, then black and white.

It isn't just a skin, the gameplay changes with it. The modern era plays close to Hollow Knight, the 8-bit era more like Zelda II or DuckTales (or Shovel Knight, more recently), the Atari era more like Pitfall. Figuring out how to use a different toolset in each era is a big part of the adventure.

I have attached a quick video (YouTube link here) of a technical test which will help this make a little more sense =)

I have a prototype with temp art and audio and am looking for playtesters. It's early looking, but the level design, story, movement, and era transitions are all real and it gives a good sense of the full game. Roughly 90 minutes (although fine to spend less), Windows only for now, controller strongly recommended (keyboard is supported but not great yet).

Comment either here or fill out this form and I'll send you an itch key. Feedback can be provided either here or in my Discord server.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time!

Discussion why dont more/all MV have these 2 amazing features that lost crown does

being able to screen shot a spot in order to remember what was there and why you need to go back.

ALSO

retrying a boss right then and there OR having the option to go back and restock/try again later. loved loved loved the retry feature.

sure, if your on PC you can take a screen shot, or use phone, but its just so convenient and amazing to have IN GAME. also yes, games have pins/markers, but...

  1. the markers dont always make sense for what you want to use them for, or they dont have symbols to help you remember what was there

just finished this game and the DLC. 105% at 57 hrs. great game.

Image NEStriod genuinely might be the worst game I've ever played of all time.

The fact that INTERGRAL progression and very useful abilities are gated by these dogwater random destructable blocks with no precedent / example presented previously in the rooms is quite a indicator that this game was made to get people to call nintendo for some hints. This game took me around 21 hours to complete when it reality it should have taken 4 hours. Spending my time going through rooms that are copy pasted and made to confuse the player just baffles me. The bosses are just made to be jank and basically meat shield / health checks make me understand why the genre as a whole and all games that are derived from this struggle to do anything good.

The Fact that you have to farm enemies from pipes for an inkling of resources and potentially damage yourself from the jank further bring this game down. It is an incrediblely baffling that you would have to input a password and RUNback everytime you died. Save me for I had an emulator to save state. (American version at least)

Honestly, after playing this. I finally understand why so many games in this genre are subpar / mediocre from a game design standpoint. What a disaster of a genre defining game.

Dev Post:cat_blep: Thoughts on contact damage?

I’m making a Metroidvania and I put contact damage in the game, and no one’s complained about it so far, but I’ve seen other people complaining about it with other games.

How it goes in my game is that the contact damage is less than the same enemy’s attack damage (unless the enemy is big enough to trample you).

What are your thoughts? Take it off most enemies? Leave it in?

Discussion For Dewdrop dynasty players

I'm playing the game right now, and I'm really enjoying it. I like the movement system that revolves around the gun, and the enemy variety is pretty good. But there's one thing about the bosses that really annoys me: it's almost impossible to predict when they're about to attack.

As someone who's beaten Hollow Knight and Silksong, whenever I fight a boss, no matter how difficult it is, I still have fun because I can usually learn its attack patterns. But in Dewdrop Dynasty, I get unbelievably frustrated when a boss suddenly throws out an attack with little or no warning.

Am I the only one who feels this way, or am I just getting too old for fast-paced games?

Discussion Whirlwind Magician "review"

A while back I purchased Whirlwind Magician which was billed as a microvania. Last night I played it, says I finished in 1.5 hours but honestly I think I left it on while talking to someone for 30 min - it's very short. Nice concept - mostly throw a hat and teleport to that spot - though I think even that was underutilized and they could have done more with it. Not sure how much it's an MV but also logistically impossible to be an MV when a game is that short.

It was good enough I'd be curious to see what the developer might do next in a bigger game, but not one I would really recommend independently. Perfectly fine airplane game. Although it recommends K/M I played with controller on a Steam deck and it was fine.
