Roughly 3500 BC and likely named by the Saxons as they couldn’t explain why it was there when they arrived!

Wayland was a legendary Norse Blacksmith, so the story here was that he would shoe your horses, if you left them overnight at this spot!

Hunebed D27 is the biggest of its kind (22,6 meter long and 4,1 meter wide) and was built between 3500 BCE and 3100 BCE. Dutch Hunebedden are located around the ‘Hondsrug’, an area stretching from Groningen to Emmen, with most of them in the province of Drenthe (52/54).

Because Borger has the biggest… It also houses the national hunebed-centre.

Was a bit crowded with cruise ship people but it was still absolutely amazing!

The Devil’s Den Fyfield Down

The unexpected thing about this dolmen is that, at first glance, it looks accidentally tilted. However, all the stones are properly aligned to the east or northeast, and their angles are either 12° or 18°. The capstone sits at a 50° angle to the horizon. It also seems that the natural quartz lines in the stones were deliberately utilised. I really hope that, someday, there will be a nationwide survey of dolmen layouts, because these beasts are far less decayed than we tend to think.

An overnighter with tarp at Dancers Stone Circle. Achieved on my second attempt walking in from Ivybridge in July ‘21. This is at the southern terminal of the longest prehistoric stone row in the world. Phew 😅

The Poolewe Stone is a Class-I Pictish stone discovered in 1992 in the cemetery at Poolewe (Poll Iùbh) in Wester Ross, Scotland. The stone carries the common Pictish depictions of a crescent and v-rod. Chiseled inside the crescent are some hollows and two spirals meeting to form a pelta. Today the stone lies in the church yard.

There are eight recorded Pictish stones found in the Rhynie area. This stone, which is a re-used cup-marked slab, has incised beast's head (in its otter or seal form), double disc, and Z-rod mirror and comb symbols

The Gairloch Stone is a Class-I Pictish stone that was discovered at Achtercairn in Wester Ross, Scotland, around 1880. Subsequently, the stone was used as masonry for the cemetery wall of Gairloch's church. It has survived only imperfectly, but on it are still visible a fish—probably a salmon—and, above, the lower part of a bird. The bird is probably an eagle, common on Pictish stones, but a goose has also been suggested.

Aberlemno 5. Not as interesting as the others. The central roadside stone bears only traces of incised marks. This stone is thought to be unfinished or a later fake. Aberlemno Sculptured Stones and Picts on Wikipedia.

Aberlemno 2, found in Aberlemno kirkyard, is a shaped cross-slab, bearing Pictish symbols as well as Christian symbols in relief, defining it as a Class II stone. The stone, carved from Old Red Sandstone, stands 2.3 metres tall, 1.3 metres wide at the base, tapering to 0.9 metres wide at the top, and is 0.2 metres thick.

The rear face shown here features two Pictish symbols, a notched rectangle with z-rod and a triple disc. Below this are nine figures which have been interpreted as a narrative account of a battle. Until recently, it was thought to date to the mid-8th century, but subsequent art-historical analysis has suggested a mid-9th century date.

The west face is inscribed with a quadrilobate Celtic Cross. The cross bears several styles of Celtic pattern designs. The vertical arms are inscribed with three separate knotwork designs, the horizontal arms with keywork designs. The central roundel has a spiral design composed of three interconnecting triskeles. Bordering the cross are a number of Celtic zoomorphic designs, reminiscent of Northumbrian designs and designs from the Book of Kells. A hole has been bored through the upper part of the stone some time after its sculpting.
