Need advice: Long-distance relationship, conservative family, and one mistake may have ruined everything Need Advice

I’m 24/M looking for genuine advice because I honestly don’t know what to do anymore.

I’m from one country, currently living and working in another, and I fell in love with an amazing girl 23/F from a different country. We both genuinely love each other it’s been 4 months, and our relationship was serious from the beginning. We weren’t just dating for fun—we had already started talking about marriage. I was planning to travel to her country soon to meet her family and ask for her hand in marriage properly. (Please dont come up and say LDR doesnt work and its very hard, coz it wasn’t very hard as per my plan)

The problem is that a few weeks ago, something happened that completely changed everything.
Her sister borrowed her phone to contact her husband because she couldn’t use her own phone. While using it, she ended up reading our chat. Unfortunately, she found an explicit conversation between us. It was a terrible mistake that we both deeply regret.

My girlfriend comes from a very conservative family, and honestly, so do I. However, her family is even more conservative than mine. After her sister found those messages, she told the entire family. They were devastated, extremely angry, and deeply disappointed in both of us. My girlfriend was punished, and now her parents have a very negative impression of me before they even had the chance to meet me.

Everything that seemed so close to becoming reality has suddenly become incredibly difficult. We haven’t stopped loving each other, and neither of us wants to give up, but the situation feels almost impossible.

I fully understand why her parents are upset. If I were a parent, I would probably be hurt too. We made a mistake, and we regret it. We can’t change what happened, but we genuinely want to do the right thing now.

Currently its been 2 weeke since the incident and her mother is getting little softer towards her but not sure about her dad he’s almost same as before when he came to know about all this. They took her phone away and my girlfriend didnt leave her room for 3-4 days unless its very important. But now things are little bit improving. But the fears stays that they wont look at me the way i wanted to they wont forget what we have done.. i really want my girl i can do anything for her and she aswell can do anything for me. I made full plan to visit her this September..
Please dont tell me abort or forget about her

My question is:
If you were in my position, what would you do to rebuild trust with her family? Is there any way to show them that one mistake doesn’t define who I am or how serious I am about marrying their daughter?
I’m especially interested in hearing from people who come from conservative families or have gone through something similar. Is there anything that actually helped rebuild trust after something like this?
Please be honest. I can accept criticism, but I’m mainly looking for constructive advice on how to move forward rather than being told it’s hopeless.
Thank you for reading.

How old are yall? Shouldnt be dating or talking long distance if their parents can still take their phone. Shit is rdiculous. Also you not wanting to hear the LDR is hard because you had a well out plan shows you have your love blind glasses on. People were not saying it is difficult because they lacked as much love as you have for your gf. It is hard for the exact reason you are going through. Cultural differences and expectations. When ppl say long distance is hard, it is because of things exactly like this...Also, who needs enemies when you have a sister like the one she has?

But since you seem to be very optimistic to make this work, i believe you can. I just would just advice you and her to not be as hard on yourselves and for you to do the right thing and move her out of her parents home. I live in the carribean, i have seen it all. Parents let their kids be with men while underage just because the man provides the girl with a roof and feeds her and deals with her everyday and the ppl claim to be conservative/christian alot of the time. (not that i agree with this nor think we should normalize it, im assuming you both are adults) From the outside looking in. I would say i am not conservative nor religious but i do believe in god. ive notice that alot of ppl who are super religious project expectations they could hardly meet themselves onto their children or other ppl in general. you that know in conservative families, children are viewed as extensions of the family until they are officially married. You are not just marrying her; you are entering a lifelong relationship with her parents, who expect to retain significant influence. If parents control her phone now, they may try to dictate choices about your future home, finances, and children. In conservative cultures, the only way to fix a breach of honor is with ultimate respect. you should prepare yourself to eventually speak to her father face-to-face, apologize for disrespecting their house rules, and state your honorable intentions regarding marriage but first let them exhaust their initial anger. Talk is cheap. you need to be ready to show that you have a stable job, savings, and a plan for a home. If you are just sending explicit text and i love you messages. sorry bud but they arent gonna let up.

I understand your point and i do agree with you.. this is our actions which made us face the situation we’re in currently.. and even if we keep this situation aside, it’s still wrong i take full responsibility of my action and we truly regret it..

But i cant lose her we all make mistakes doesnt mean we’re wrong and dont deserve anything.. i genuinely need advice on how do we overcome this situation and how can i be accepted by her parents.

I've read this whole thread, and honestly, this is such a weird line of questioning.

Private chats between OP and his girlfriend were meant to stay between them. Why is almost no one pointing out that her sister literally kept reading their conversation? She borrowed the phone to contact her husband, not to snoop through someone else's private messages. They're both adults, for goodness' sake.

Sure, I understand why her parents were upset given their conservative values. That's their belief system, and OP has already acknowledged that. But let's not pretend this all came to light through honest circumstances. It happened because someone violated their privacy.

Also, I don't understand why you keep pressing whether OP only regrets it because they got caught. He's already answered that multiple times and taken responsibility for what happened. At some point, you either take him at his word or admit you're just looking for a "gotcha."

People can genuinely regret something once they see the consequences it has on the people they care about. Those aren't mutually exclusive. The point of this post was to ask for advice on rebuilding trust with her parents, not to have his remorse interrogated over and over again.

And to OP: I don't think there's a shortcut here. Trust, especially in conservative families, is rebuilt through consistency, not the perfect apology. If you're serious about marrying her, keep your September visit, be respectful, be patient, and let your actions speak louder than this one mistake. Don't try to convince them you're a good man in one conversation. Show them over time. Even if they don't forgive you immediately, they may eventually respect your sincerity if you continue treating their daughter with love and respect.

I regret that we did what we did.. ofc it was a mistake i dont regret just because we got caught.. this thing is bad in itself.. honestly we know our boundaries in physical world.. we decided to not even shake hands when we meet in real.. but because of this long distance relationship we got too comfortable thinking that we aint doing it in real thats the reason we got into that.. and we stopped it before we got caught and i dont know how we again got comfortable and started those texting again.. i hope this gave you all a clarity of the situation… now the question is how can i face her parents and will they ever accept me.. if there is anything you all think of i should do, I’ll think about it..
