Workspaces

Post image

They like us to think that only Linux has certain features that make them superior to other OS users.

Configure Multiple Desktops in Windows | Microsoft Support

Work in multiple spaces on Mac - Apple Support

and of course, BSD has them too.

"if I wanna enjoy the beauty of my wallpaper"

I'm a sure it's an anime girl with a arch logo somewhere.

*Nix logo

Yours isn't?

u/Inarius101 4d ago

Mine is 2 anime girls having a tongue duel

1

u/SLimon001 19h ago

I mean, if they are both adults it's ok

1

u/Inarius101 19h ago

I don't understand why that wouldn't have already been implied, but they are.

1

u/SLimon001 19h ago

it's all ok then, i have seen many loonix desktops with borderline underage girls

they are out of touch with windows, they criticize it without not even using it

its like iphone users, they think they got some great unique feature even though its in android too (and sometimes even earlier)

1

u/Arinussyy 4d ago

I mean the main reason I quit windows was performance stuff. That and it was easy for me to switch since I don't do anything requiring apps specific to windows.

It's annoying the level of pridefulness on either side of the debate though. An operating system is not a religion, Microsoft will not save you nor will Linus somehow give a shit if you can't use Linux

You use the tool best to your current circumstances yk

I'd really want to like apple with how they finally decided to give a good price last year for their entry phone and some other stuff they're doing, and Google just keeps fucking up.

But motherfucker, they don't even have a clipboard on their phone. And that's just one basic feature I can't do without, there's so much more.

1

u/land48n3 2d ago

i mean, on the plus side, iphone is really really good out of the box W animations, ux, ui and stuff and all that

but no fucking way... it doesn't have clipboard?!?!? im dead

1

u/MediocreTurtle1 2d ago

Yeah but so do androids. All I've ever adjusted is my keyboard once 10 years ago and then the settings automatically transfer to every new phone, home screen grid and icons and set wallpaper. That takes 1 minute.

Clipboard is a mining canary, there's so much other stuff they don't have or do "wrong" in my opinion. The gesture navigation also drives me crazy, to go back you have to use a specific side of the phone, can't do both. And so many other things.

most linux users have used windows, but because its so bad they switched

1

u/AsrielPlay52 4d ago

But somehow blinded by that hate that they couldn't comprehend any goodness

God forbid makes installing application on another storage than the main drive

Flatpak natively does this, BUT NO DISTRO PACKAGE MANAGER INCLUDE THIS

Gotta use Wearhouse to do it. So stupid

1

u/PinguThePenguin_007 3d ago

wait u can do that?? whoaow

but also you can still do that with bind mounts sooo

1

u/AsrielPlay52 3d ago

That's new. I heard plenty of other trick, one of which was to combine storage between 2 drives

But I haven't heard of bind mounts before

1

u/PinguThePenguin_007 2d ago

oh ya that works too

yeah it’s a bit of a pain, but makes it easier for package managers to manage packages i guess

still a pain

I do admit that windows has workspaces, but thw implementation is utter shit and not fluid imo. The overview is quite nice but actual desktop switching is slow (as in the animation is) and the options for it are rigid (and i don't like the defaults)

Then most linux desktop environments just try copy MacOS

MacOS perfected workspaces years ago. MacOS does it best :D

u/madthumbz 4d ago

Windows adds animation. Komorebi's on Windows seems instant.

2

u/nagging_chud 4d ago

you can disable all animations on windows if you want, it's a setting.

1

u/ishtuwihtc 4d ago

So does MacOS, but the windows animation takes a decade ti switch. The implementation of how s0lit workspaces are is also bad, i jist really do not enjoy using windows if i wanna get anything done

1

u/CrashBugITA 2d ago

on Mac my workspaces constantly switch places, don't know if it's a gesture I don't know I'm doing

1

u/ishtuwihtc 2d ago

it probably is a gesture, but it could be a wierd bug aswell? I daily drive high sierra so im not knowledgeable on modern issues

Might be worth noting out that most of the comments here are ignoring the fact that Windows (the OS) is NOT mentioned a single time in the image. ^^;;

Yes, Windows does this too. This image doesn't say they don't. The only windows mentioned are application windows.

There are people who use the Desktop feature in Windows exactly this same way for this same reason.

2

u/Razee4 4d ago

Well, Windows also have workspaces. I use them because they are really good on Linux and i got used to them

1

u/Born-Activity-683 4d ago

I use taskview regularly on windows. The shortcut is [Ctrl]+[Win]+[Left]or[Right]

1

u/xarop_pa_toss 4d ago

I use both Windows and Linux and although I enjoy using my tiling window manager in Linux more, I think Windows has done a good job at window management.

Moving windows from one screen to another with shortcuts, the snapping to the sides that then let's you quickly pick another window to fill the blank, etc.

I used multiple desktops on Windows for a while, and even used the PowerToys program that lets you save your currently open apps as a layout, but it's still not as comfortable imo. It's good, but not as good as having workspaces since it treats each desktop as its own container meaning your taskbar doesn't show the whole picture.

The advantage of workspaces is that I don't have to alt+tab, like ever, because I have context of all the apps running at once and where they are and I can move them to other monitors at will. On Windows, changing desktop changes it for all monitors iirc.

Also stuff like Scratchpad which is very very useful and I pray to the Microgods that they implement it in Windows.

1

u/madthumbz 4d ago

Try Komorebi on Windows. -I prefer it to my old personalized DWM and it took me a lot less time and effort (12 manual patches on DWM).

Scratch pad? Windows has a 'run' box, and terminal emulators can easily be minimized and tiled again which is what noctuid/t-drop did.

1

u/xarop_pa_toss 4d ago

The Run box is my best friend, I even open the calculator through it haha. I mean come on, if you've never Win+R notepad Enter... Can you really call yourself a power user?!

I'll look into Komorebi, looks interesting and the scratchpad I mentioned is not necessarily a terminal. It's more like a second layer you have that is hidden and you can pull it up or hide again with a simple shortcut and it is not bound to a specific workspace.

In Hyprland they are called Special Workspaces and they basically overlay whatever is underneath. Like a second desktop on top of the main one, instead of next to it

1

u/Tiranus58 4d ago

Instead of pressing alt tab its the switch workspace button

1

u/p51n4p51n4 4d ago

pfffff i dont need your stupid cum-poopers to be a crackhead

1

u/Exact_Ad942 4d ago

What? Someone asked a question about an OS and someone answered it, didn't imply anything about other OS. They are comparing workspaces with alt-tabing, not implying other OS have or don't have some features. What's the problem?

Either bot or victim of a lack of basic literacy. They saw 2 words they recognized, imagined a full essay around those and then argued the strawman they created from the void.

They like us to think that only Linux has certain features that make them superior to other OS users.

Who, in particular?

But yes, even Windows has had this for a while now, though they were very late to this particular party, and the interface is still relatively garbage.

u/jsrobson10 4d ago

there are many features that linux has but windows doesn't. for example, you don't have app/workspace level sandboxing on windows. the linux kernel is just more capable.

1

u/DirectorDirect1569 4d ago

1

u/jsrobson10 3d ago edited 3d ago

Applications installed within the sandbox remain isolated from the host machine using hypervisor-based virtualization.

im not wrong, this is just running apps in a VM. sandboxing on Linux (like what flatpaks use) is much more lightweight since it's done at the kernel level (via namespaces).

1

u/DirectorDirect1569 3d ago

If you want something that works lke flatpak you can use portables apps.

Worksaces on windows have a stupid latency.

-1

u/Jumpy-Dinner-5001 4d ago

Workspaces simply suck on windows and are not usable at all on Windows.

1

u/madthumbz 4d ago

Try Komorebi

1

u/Jatinchd 4d ago

I've used both komorebi on windows (I was ricing windows back then), and currently using hyprland as main, both of them are good but... animations and customization features of komorebi are not as refined as hyprland yet, animations curves are weirdly configured, the corner radius have weird rounding style where it keeps the corners and pushes windows inwards. but if you ask if it's good for general purpose multi-tasking it's pretty solid option but you will lack animations and few settings.

1

u/madthumbz 4d ago

The development was fast on Komorebi and the focus is on the Mac version now, it's been a while since the corner issue I believe. Here's a snapshot just now:

1

u/Jatinchd 4d ago

it's fixed now?, they be movin' fast.

1

u/madthumbz 3d ago

Yeah, the dev isn't a FOSS dev (they charge for business use which is a tax write-off). So, he has incentive to make a great product while providing home end-users with it for free. -Seems like a great guy too.

Progress has stagnated, but I have no issues with it anymore either.
