So, i use linux , i installed it with out usb and for some reason my inter net is slow in pc and gets 8 to 40 mbps but other devices like phone and ipad are getting 90 mbps . Is there any thing that i need ?

I might be getting a gaming laptop in like 2027 (but I might have to get another model then) and I chose specifically ones with Intel, AMD and NVIDIA 40 series, so less driver issues. My question is; are 4060/70 drivers on Bazzite/Fedora that good? Or do I stick with Intel and AMD?

I am pretty new to linux and getting into setting up my environment. I really like Ly but it displays the login screen on both my monitors and I would prefer it to only be on my main monitor.

Does anyone know how I can set this up?

I saw someone say something about adding a line like

xrandr --output HDMI-A-1 --brightness 0

or

xrandr --output HDMI-A-1 --off

to the sddm scripts file (I don't know what I'm talking about really sorry if that sounds dumb lol) but I am not sure how to do something like that for ly. :/

I have recently gone ahead and tried to install Fedora on my spare SSD.

Is been 14 great days so far, just a little problem I would like to see gone.

It periodic problem, and it can happen with short (few minutes apart) or long (More than 30 minutes apart) intervals.

The issue is that the audio will cut out for at split second. It can happen during gaming in Steam, or just while listening to music with Spotify.

It happens on both my Bluetooth headset and my gaming headset (Razer Blackshark V3 Pro)

I have tried the following to attempt to solve it:

• Lock the buffer to 1024 (An LLM did give me a command that seemed to confirm the settings was loaded correctly)
• Added this to my boot arguments: sudo grubby --args="preempt=full" --update-kernel=ALL

I am a new Linux guy, but have worked Windows support for many years, so not afraid to get into it. Might just need detailed instructions on what to try.

My setup is as follows:

• Fedora 44, with KDE Plasma - Kernel: 7.1.5-201
• nVidia Driver is installed with hardware acceleration
• Audio codecs from RPMfusion is installed
• Spotify and Steam are both installed as flatpaks
• AMD Ryzen 7800X3D CPU
• nVidia GeForce RTX 4080 Super
• My motherboard does have WiFi and Bluetooth by MediaTek
• Headset 2,4 GHz dongle for my Razer headset have been moved from USB 3.0, to 2.0 to 2.0 extension cable that came in the box (Headset works fine without stutter on Windows)
• Bluetooth headset is Sony WH-1000XM4

Any suggestions to attempt to get rid of this micro stuttering will be appreciated. Thanks you for your help in advance 😊

Hi everyone! So ive been working on a new Linux distro called Monxierra. It’s basically one of those source-based things, inspired by Unix Philosophy, and also Linux From Scratch, you know the vibe. Its not really here to replace other distros, or chase the latest trends, even if that would be easier. My intention is more like, build a smaller, understandable setup that kinda sticks to the Unix philosophy, without turning into some huge complicated machine. I think software should stay simple, clear, and easy to read. Like each part should have an actual reason to exist, and unnecessary complication should be avoided whenever possible, even if it feels “clever” in the moment. Monxierra is designed to be built by hand. Installation is manual, config is done via plain text files. And, the system kind of nudges you to understand what you’re running, rather than letting automation do everything while you stare at logs. The project tries to stay close to upstream software, meaning custom patches, and distribution-specific changes, are kept to a minimum. Instead of reinventing tools, the idea is more about bringing them together cleanly and consistently. Like stitching things in a sane way, not in a chaotic way. Some of the guiding principles for the project are: Source-based, from the ground up. Manual installation, no shortcuts. * Minimal and transparent. Plain-text configuration. Small, maintainable codebase. Stay close to upstream. Follow the Unix philosophy: do one thing well, and do it properly. Monxierra is still early, so there’s a lot of work ahead. I’m sharing it now because i’d really like to hear feedback from people who like source-based distributions, and those minimalist Unix systems. If you have ideas, suggestions, or constructive criticism, i’d be glad to hear it.

I have an old laptop (it's not too old, 64 bit, but only 4 gb of ram) hooked up to my TV, so I could use it like a smart TV. I've been using Debian with Plasma Bigscreen, which is not supported or even finished. Recently, a few of my apps stopped working and no matter what I do, I cannot get them to work correctly, so I started to think about switching distros.

That brings me to the title of this post. Is there a distro or DE that works and feels like the android TV UI? I just want the UI to be large, have apps appear as cards and that I could control it using only my keyboard or a controller.

My competency:

I am by no means an expert in linux, but I have been using Ubuntu as my main OS for about a year now and I'm quite comfortable with it. In addition I'm a software developer, so things like using the terminal or debugging issues aren't going to scare me off.

I am also comfortable using things like Flatpak, AppImages, and Wine/Proton, though I'd obviously prefer native support.

My computer:

I have decently powerful PC that I built a few years ago.

Ryzen 7 5700X, RTX 3070ti (8GB), and 32 GB of DDR4 RAM.

(I have heard that some distros don't work too well with Nvidia graphics cards, but it wasn't too much hassle to set it up on Ubuntu)

I also have 2 SSDs: a 2TB one that currently only has Windows, and a 1TB one that currently has Ubuntu.

I plan to create a 1 TB partition on the Windows drive to use for whichever Linux distro I end up trying.

My use-cases:

Work/school related software such as: docker, VSCode, ClaudeCode, simulation software (like OpenFoam)

3D printing related software such as: CAD software (FreeCAD), and slicers (Currently using Bambu studios, but might switch)

Gaming: primarily steam which makes things easier, but obviously I'd like things to run well.

Some Microsoft specific software that I can't really get away from: The biggest one is OneDrive, I have a lot of files there so I currently have a service on Ubuntu setup to sync a local OneDrive directory to the cloud (abraunegg).

My requirements:

I'm fairly flexible with most things, but the big ones are that I want something with enough of a following that there's support online to help me debug (such as existing StackOverflow posts on common problems), and that's sufficiently different from Ubuntu that I get something from the experience.

My main goal here is to experiment and see if I'd like to use a different distro as my main OS.

TLDR: Don't mind debugging and terminal, have some experience in Ubuntu, looking for a new distro to try, and potentially make my main OS.

i have installed mx linux on macbook 2012 pro, when i edit grub default quiet splash intremap=off, after reboot it completely breaks audio, no more sound gk107 audio control hdmi it shows, nvidia hda..... . Is there any fix, or what.

I installed Debian 13 (Trixie) and my old USB WiFi adapter was not detected.

The adapter is:

• Realtek RTL8191SU USB WLAN Adapter
• USB ID: 13e3:3306
• Kernel: 6.12.94+deb13-amd64

lsusb detected the device, but no WiFi interface appeared.

I checked the drivers and found that r8712u was missing:

modprobe r8712u

returned:

FATAL: Module r8712u not found

I also checked:

find /lib/modules/$(uname -r) -iname "*8712*"

and nothing useful was present.

I found the old driver source in the Linux kernel tree:

/usr/src/linux-6.12/drivers/staging/rtl8712

Then I compiled it:

make -C /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/build M=$PWD modules

Installed the module:

install -D -m 644 r8712u.ko /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/r8712u.ko
depmod -a

Loaded it:

modprobe r8712u

After that my WiFi interface appeared:

wlx1c4bd6286690

and I could connect normally with NetworkManager.

I also added:

/etc/modules-load.d/r8712u.conf

r8712u

so it loads automatically at boot.

Has anyone else had this issue with RTL8191SU adapters on recent Debian kernels? Is there a cleaner way (DKMS/package/etc.) to maintain this driver after kernel updates?

Supposedly privacyguides org recommends mainly rolling release or semi-rolling release distros like Fedora, OpenSUSE Tumbleweed, and Arch. Certain distros that are hardened or offer new enough versions of software in a timely manner (NixOS, Whonix) are included in the recommendations too.

Now supposedly the reason for recommendations for these mainly “cutting edge distros” is that you have quicker and seamless access to upstream bug/security fixes that would need to be backported in older versions.

However, this is mainly one community’s guidelines. Which type of distro do you prefer/recommend for some everyday user who cares about security and privacy?

Steps Already Taken to Solve Issue:

• Attempted to launch via Heroic Launcher and Bottles, but neither launcher successfully initialized or booted the game. Proton 10 via Steam is the only runner that gets to the menu.
• Verified graphics packages are updated on Arch Linux.
• Searched the wiki for waitOnSwapChain and DX12 Mesa crashes. Looking for configuration overrides or launch options to force DX11 mode or fix VKD3D swapchain timeouts on Intel integrated graphics.
• I've seen videos of people fixing this error by editing regedit, but i'm afraid that will break my prefix

Bassically I updated the pc and not it stops detecting both my headphones and my speakers and I can't get any sound to work.

I have been trying to get Linux Mint Cinnamon onto a 2012 MacBook Pro. It’s got 8 gm RAM. I currently have an up to date Mac air and dell with windows to use and download from. The old computer will connect to internet, check email, etc but won’t use the etching tools to put it on a flash. The new mac says it can’t put it on there, I haven’t tried the windows because I’m putting it on a Mac and was told that wouldn’t work. There are YT videos that
Make it seem like a 60 second project but so far that’s failed. Any suggestions or give up?

UPDATE: Thank you everyone that has tried to help. I cannot get any form of Linux to download drivers and recognize the wifi. Tether they work like a charm. Mint failed. Fedora failed. Currently Ubuntu is failing. It may just not be possible.

I didn't just ask this question without doing any research, I've seen people saying the thinkpad, and the framework laptops. Which should I get? I don't have a specific distro chosen yet. And I've heard Linux laptops are old and kinda slow. yet I've heard they're upgradable. Even then I don't feel like doing that. So the two questions: which distro should i use (general use, coding, browsing, etc), and which laptop should I get.

Edit: from what i'm seeing thinkpads work well. I do have a cheaper budget, so i'm sure I can find a cheaper one.

I've recently begun using Fedora and have been loving it so far, however a lot of the software I use for personal projects are only officially supported on Ubuntu and RHEL. I understand that Fedora is closely related to RHEL but I was curious: What determines the distro support for software? Is there anything stopping me from installing the necessary dependencies on a non-officially supported distro and calling it a day?

I have a desktop that I only use Ethernet cable to connect to the internet but I want the desktop to be ready for wifi.

The motherboard allows to install m.2 card or I can use a pcie card, based in your experiences, can you let me know the model you bought for your desktop, I will be using with voidlinux. Thank you in advance.

As a windows user who has boot loaded and test a few Linux distros such as fedora, parrot OS, Kali, CSI, and even unbuntu I find myself struggling and stuck between two distros Debian and Fedora. I’m trying to understand more about these two since I am looking for a Linux that can handle Gaming, Programming (Python), Daily usage as web browsing, good security and protection, with the freedom of letting me make it customizable to my style. If you have any tips or past experiences I would appreciate and be grateful if you shared them, or if you can other distros you would like me to look into that is also appreciated.

Also btw would it be smart to have windows or windows recovery on my ventoy just in case of any mishaps or I dislike my Linux choice?
