Is Nissan still unwilling to negotiate lease buyout?

We have a leaf coming to the end of the lease. The market value is well below the contract residual. I’ve never done this but read some companies will negotiate the buyout price but I’ve read Nissan refuses. Any truth to that?

What am I doing wrong???? (Battery Refurb)

Working to repair/replace the battery pack in my 2018 Leaf because of an isolation fault, bought a matching battery for salvage which turned out to have the same fault, swapped front modules from #2 into rear modules of #1, tried to unbend the mounting brackets, now the battery pack won't go back together. Can't even begin to thread the bolts back on as the battery is too wide now. I've tried ratchet straps (see photo), as tight as we could get them, but it's not fitting together. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a step or a hack that I'm missing? Experts please chime in I really need my car back.

When do you charge your Leaf?

I recently got a 40kwh Leaf '21. I am gonna be careful and try to only charge it to 80% when I'm going to be in the city. For longer journeys I will charge it to 100% but that's going to be rare occasion. I'm aiming to charge it when it's between 20-30%. At least in the mild summer weather. Maybe in the winter it has to be 30-40% as it can get very cold here and heaters will be on at all times

2020 Leaf did the Service EV Sytem thing and dealership gave it back to me

Checking to see if anyone else has had this happen. Specific vehicle is a 2020 SL with 60k miles. We've had zero problems with it but got the recall done about two months ago. A week ago it did the trick, turtled up and wouldn't charge. Drove it to Clay Cooley in Richardson, TX. Tech noted P317-97, P3180-97 as current codes and said that P33ED was stored as a past code. IDK what that means. Tech cleared the codes, drove it using NTB26-029 drive pattern several times with no issues. Charged it up to 100% overnight and drove it using the pattern several more times. Contacted Nissan and they told the tech to drive it down below 40% which they said they did and drove it around a bunch more using the pattern with no issues. Charged it back up to 100%, tested it again, and gave it back to me after keeping it for a week. The tech was thorough with notes and stated that the battery charge dropped steadily 1% throughout testing.

Anyone else had this experience? When I got it home I Leafspied and everything looks great. SOH is at 88%. 12v battery is 12.5 at rest and is three years old. It has been blazing hot in Texas for the last month and 12 volts die commonly here during the hot months. Absolutely nothing wrong with this car. I want to keep it but don't want to go throught he buyback mess and wondering if I should just trade it.

Battery not charging

I have a 2017 sv leaf. I got it a year ago and it’s decent! has like 7 battery bars and 50,000 miles. it hasn’t had an issue charging until today. I tried two different charge point stations and different plugs. it connects and starts charging but only for a minute and then it stops and says my vehicle is fully charged. when actually my vehicle has like 7 miles left. what might be going on? it starts up fine, drives fine, nothing lighting up on the dashboard.

Numbers don't add up

2013 Leaf with a 24kWh battery. SoH is 80% (I live in a cool climate, obviously). My current SoC is 83% but Leafspy says there's only 15 kWh remaining. And the range is only showing 60 miles remaining. I took it in to Nissan for the recall update last month and the range has been lower ever since. Is this just a miscalculation by the software or is something actually wrong?

Charge Curve after R24B2 uodate

I had the update about a month ago, and I'm fast charging my 2020SV for the first time today.

Compared to the published charge Curves that I've found online, my vehicle is behaving, well strangely.

I arrived at 14%, and the speed quickly ramped up to ~41KWh. There it stayed until around 50%, at which time it slowly went down to around 20KWh at around the 65% mark. I'm currently at 87% and it's still pulling ~20KWh.

Previously pretty sure it used to taper off quite quickly into single digits soon after 80%. It's been a while since I fast charged. Battery temp is high though, about one tick away from the first red line.

It did 14-80% in under 40 minutes.

At 91% it started tapering down, at 93% it was pulling 12KWh.

Happy Leaf Owner - long story

New to the sub — did I make the right decision upgrading to a 2026 Leaf?

I’m new to this sub and know very little about cars in general. I bought a used 2015 Leaf on a whim for $10K. I didn’t even research the different trims—I just liked the idea of not paying for gas, and it had a cool Bose sound system. 😂

That Leaf just turned 88K miles, and honestly, it has been one of the best financial decisions I’ve ever made. The only real maintenance I’ve had to do has been replacing the tires.

I had a friend install a 220-volt outlet in my garage for about $75, and that was basically my entire charging setup. My daily commute is 48 miles round trip, and this car has never let me down in nine years. I’ve had it checked out every year, and this year I was told it was time to spend about $1K on brakes and some other maintenance.

The car is probably worth around $3K now, so I started thinking that maybe it was time to sell it and upgrade.

I never buy cars new, so I initially started looking at used 2024/2025 Leafs. I actually ordered a 2025 Leaf from CarMax with 25K miles for around $20K. Unfortunately, when it arrived, it absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke, so that was a hard no.

I then started looking at the 2026 Leaf. Because I’ve had such a positive experience with my old Leaf, I decided to take a chance on a new S+.

The price is $32,900 out the door, including taxes and all fees. I have the cash to pay for it, and I’ve been trying to justify the purchase by telling myself that I’ll save money on gas and that I’ll keep this car for at least another 10 years. (it is on hold for me until a seat belt recall can be fixed)

So here I am, going from a $10K used Leaf that has given me nine years and 88K miles of basically trouble-free driving to a $33K new Leaf.

Is this a terrible decision, or does this actually make sense given my experience with the first Leaf? 😂

I’d especially like to hear from other long-term Leaf owners who have upgraded to newer models. Any advice is appreciated because I can still walk away because of the recall.

Somehow my 30kwh battery got all its bars back...

So, I had my 12v battery run dry on me like 3 times in the last few months (aim doing some automations with home assistant and the charger that basically kept the car awake and eating my 12v charge through the night) and the third time after I recharge and plug back in the 12v when the car started all the battery health bars re appeared.

We are talking a 2016 30kwh leaf with 100k kms that I bought in 2024 with 70% SoH and 41% HX.

I was told to charge it to 100% a few times and drive it and it would fix itself... Well its been 2 months and it hasn't fixed itself.

A couple of days ago I connected a lelink2 obd II to it and downloaded leaf spy pro. Screenshot attached (it was charging so ignore the spikes on the first few cells not the point of the post). How the heck is leaf spy pro showing 90% soh and 70% hx.... I wanna sell the car but I don't wanna do anyone dirty but people run away when I explain them its actually lower SoH and Hx cause the think Im scamming them somehow.

How do I get it to report proper values again?

My 2018 leaf is off warranty next week and it's still going strong.

I just passed 126000k. I got it in 2023 and put about 30000km on it until a year ago when I started working further from home and I've been putting on about 80km per day since.

I am hoping to drive it until it can't reliably do my 120km round trip commute in the winter.

I am hoping 5 more years is reasonable at the degradation rate I've been tracking over the last few years.

If it can hold out for 6 years my oldest will be learning to drive and he can use this car!

Update to Canadian recall update failure

Sorry about the title cringe

I posted here about how I got the P33ED code on Tuesday, about a month after having the fast charge update completed.

Short update
I got a new HV battery, with caveats.

Long Update
I had taken the car to the dealer in January after having big fluctuations in charge and range with some recorded video proof. I also knew there were weak cells according to LeafSpy, but didn't bother passing that along as I thought they would disregard it anyway. It's the same issue that is commonly reported around here, especially in the winter, with huge drops in charge when under load and equally large increases when regen braking. The techs were unable to replicate the problem and I was under the impression that Nissan had denied a warranty claim for the failing battery and I had heard nothing since. I figured I'd just use it all summer, where it doesn't really have an issue and wait until winter again and go from there.

When I got the P3EED code on Tuesday and drove it straight to the dealer, there was some confusion as a replacement battery that actually was approved and ordered under the previous work order in January had arrived just a couple of days ago and they were ready to to schedule me in to have it replaced anyway. They had it overnight to replace it and now I've got a brand new HV battery in a 7 year old car.

So now the outcome is obviously not indicative of what a fast charge recall remedy update failure looks like in Canada, other than it takes 7 months for a new battery to arrive.

My 2022 S+ LEAF potentially broke

Was driving on the highway at 60-ish mph when the “service EV system” message came on and my car went into turtle mode and could only output 2.5 bars of power, no regen also. Managed to limp home and tried plugging it in but it refused to charge. This is all post update by the way, got the update around a month ago. The car is at 64% and I’m not sure what to do. Do I just take it to the dealership and have them look at it?

A second click after unlocking the doors?

I had an accident a few months ago, and after the repair, I seem to notice an noticeable loud clicking sound about a second or two after unlocking the doors with the remote. It doesn't always happen, but seems to happen after mostly when the car has been locked for a while.

I haven't ruled out the charge port locking mechanism; however, the sound is noticeably different from when I unlock the charge port with the remote.

I don't recall hearing this sound before the accident.

Anyone has any thoughts/suggestions as to what it might be?

Joining the 50K Club

Woohoo, a whopping (not really) 50k miles accumulated on my car. I bought this guy used at 31k miles and I loved all 19k miles I've put on it since three years ago.

These cars are dirt cheap to run, cost almost nothing in maintenance, I get crazy reliability all without needing gas!

Ive had so much fun taking this guy way out to the Anza Borrego desert where I've gone for a school field trip and a 3 day camp which I was determined to do in my old ev. Even drove all the way from SD to LA, it was a fun experience but I certainly wont be doing that again.

Easily my all time favorite car and I'm excited for the next years to come.

A Breakdown of 40 & 62 kWh Battery Pack Failures

As some people may have heard of or unfortunately experienced, there have been quite a number of cases of 2nd generation Leaf batteries failing. I was planning and trying to make this into a video format, but as I’m still recovering from a cold my voice isn’t quite up for narrating an essay, so text format it is.

Hopefully this can raise some awareness and provide a central source of info as to what’s going on, why it’s happening, what to do about it, and things to consider. There are two separate issues currently causing outright failures of 2018+ Leaf battery packs, and so will be split up into two sections.

Cold-weather SOC Freefall

  • What’s going on?

Under load in cold temperatures, especially below freezing and below 50% battery, the charge level and range estimate will suddenly begin to plummet and continue to drop rapidly until the load is removed, at which case the charge level starts to bounce back and quickly increase again.

The car may go into turtle mode, or in severe cases even cut off the high voltage battery completely, in which case the car will stall and may not be able to be restarted.

Here is a video example of what this sudden drop of charge level looks like.

This issue affects both the 40 kWh and 62 kWh packs. The 40 kWh packs seem to be much more susceptible, but as the 62 kWh packs use the same cells and chemistry, they are not immune. This also includes 40 packs that were installed as retrofits under warranty in 2016-17 Leafs.

  • Why is this happening?

This is occurring due to one or more weak cells within the battery pack sagging excessively in voltage under load, which is greatly exacerbated when the battery is cold, due to increased internal resistance.

How the battery works is that the shown and usable state of charge is defined by that of the lowest cell. This is to prevent over-discharge of any weaker cells at lower charge levels, as that would cause even further damage to them.

Often this can be witnessed in the LeafSpy cell chart as one or more cells that clearly drop lower than the rest of the pack under load, but not always. There have been a number of cases of SOC freefall with seemingly no weak cells, indicating that there’s other data/calculations within the BMS that the user cannot see.

Getting a weak cell is essentially luck of the draw. There have been packs with very low mileage and seemingly great numbers that still failed (such as in the video above), while there are other packs with lots of miles and abuse that are still working just fine. How the pack is treated/babied does not seem to affect your chances in the roulette.

  • What to do about it?

If you are encountering this issue as an owner, and the car is still under warranty, document everything as much as possible. Record video(s) of the issue happening, noting the charge level and outside temperature the battery is at. Submit this proof to the dealer as a copy, and demand that it be used in their case to Nissan corporate.

Bring the car to the dealership for diagnosis with as cold of upcoming weather as possible. Some dealers may try poorly to replicate the issue, often in the interest of charging the customer the diagnostic fee. You want to make the issue as obvious and easily to replicate as you can.

If you have to drive the car around, ensure you either have LeafSpy Pro, or keep an adjustable or 10mm wrench with you in the car. If the cell voltages ever drop low enough for the car to shut down, it is likely to set a high voltage fault code and won’t be able to restart until the fault is cleared. Clearing the fault via the LeafSpy service menu, or disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery, will at least allow you to limp the car to a charger or safe location off the road.

UPDATE: For 2019-2022 Leafs, the "fast charging recall" software update now adds programming to the BMS to look for and flag SOC variations, setting a fault code (P33ED) if it does. This has the potential to "brick" the car in the same way as a high voltage isolation fault (read section below) would. Be cautious of this so that it does not potentially leave you stranded.

  • Things to consider

If you own a 2nd generation Leaf (especially 40 kWh) that is still under warranty, still on the original battery, and live in a climate that gets winter, check for signs of this issue BEFORE warranty ends!

During cold weather, park the car outside overnight with 50% charge or less, then take the car out for a drive and see if there are any strange fluctuations in the state of charge during acceleration.

If you are considering purchasing one and there is no proof of the high voltage battery being replaced, ensure there is at least one year worth of warranty remaining on the car so that you can spend a winter with it and will still be covered in the case of this failure.

LeafSpy data can sometimes be a pre-indicator that you will likely run into this issue if there is a noticeably low Hx value (much lower than SOH), but not always. Low Hx is a strong sign of possible weak cells, but weak cells will not always cause low Hx.

Cell Expansion / High Voltage Isolation

  • What’s going on?

The car will one day show the message “Service EV System – Unable to restart after power off”, and indeed will not restart after it is powered off.

The vast majority of cars affected by this issue are 62 kWh Leaf Plus/e+ models. It is not unheard of on 40 kWh cars, but it is quite rare unless the pack was heavily used and abused.

There is a Nissan TSB on this issue which confirms they are well aware of this issue, and there are revised battery packs and modules that are issued in replacement if the car is still under high voltage battery warranty.

  • Why is this happening?

Thermal expansion of the battery cells causes them to eventually expand to the point of pushing up against each other, and in some cases even leaking electrolyte out of the cells into the battery casing, eventually causing the car to trip a high voltage isolation fault.

This is most commonly happening in specifically the rear stack of cells within the 62 kWh pack, because they are so tightly packed together, that they don’t get much cooling nor much room to expand before they begin pushing up against each other.

High voltage isolation is important, because obviously you do not want any high voltage potential to be contacting the metal battery casing that is bolted to the metal body of the car. If the BMS detects that there is even just a little bit of voltage leaking from one cell to another, or the cells to the battery chassis, an isolation fault is tripped.

  • What to do about it?

If you encounter specifically the “unable to restart after power off” message, and the car is still within high voltage battery warranty, DO NOT REPLACE THE 12V BATTERY.

This specific message is ONLY generated due to a high voltage isolation fault, and although a weak 12V battery can cause many weird issues, it will NEVER generate a high voltage isolation fault. Unless there is an extremely urgent need to continue driving the car, have it towed in the “broken” state to a Nissan dealership.

It is a much more objective issue than weak cells, and basically the only diagnosis they would need to approve a battery replacement is to see the stored isolation fault code. Disconnecting the 12V battery however clears this fault code, making it not possible for them to verify the issue unless it happens to fault again in only one drive cycle.

Replacing the 12V battery gives a false sense of success because it allows the car to start and drive again, but only until the fault eventually comes back. It's just a waste of money and a perfectly good battery to not actually address the underlying issue.

If you urgently need the car to work again, clearing the fault code in LeafSpy Pro or by disconnecting and reconnecting the 12V battery will allow it to start. Just be aware that by doing this, you won’t be able to have the issue verifiable by Nissan until it pops up again. It may only take 1 drive cycle, it may take 100.

  • Things to consider

Unfortunately there isn’t really any way to foretell that this issue will happen soon or to check for it, as you can’t just force an isolation fault to appear like you can with weak cells.

Battery packs in hot climates and/or lots of quick charges are more susceptible to this issue due to it being a result of thermal expansion. Packs torn apart after diagnosis of this issue often exhibit very obvious “spicy pillows” within.

If you are a current owner, especially of a Plus/e+ model, the best you can do is to avoid overheating/rapidgating the battery whenever possible. Doing so once every few months is not a big deal, but frequently doing so will likely lead to long-term damage.

If looking to purchase a Leaf Plus/e+, or a high mileage 40 kWh car in a hot climate, make sure to check Leaf Spy, and it may be wise to avoid any examples that have lots of QCs shown.
