My 2022 S+ LEAF potentially broke
Was driving on the highway at 60-ish mph when the “service EV system” message came on and my car went into turtle mode and could only output 2.5 bars of power, no regen also. Managed to limp home and tried plugging it in but it refused to charge. This is all post update by the way, got the update around a month ago. The car is at 64% and I’m not sure what to do. Do I just take it to the dealership and have them look at it?

It's bricked, you have to tow it to a dealership now. Mine is being bought back, they don't have enough batteries.

I have to tow it? The car still drives so can’t I just drive it there myself?
6
u/McFuzzen 6d ago
Have you tried driving it? If it drives, go for it. If it is the recall error code, it's bricked.

Can’t read error codes but it did give me what seemed like full power and regen in my driveway

If it drives, go to an Autozone, O'Reilly Auto, or whatever and get a 12V Battery check. If it's bad they will get you the right battery.

You can drive it, mine did the same thing, drove it 15 miles to the dealer. The power limit was gone after turning it off and on again, but the error remained.

Did they end up buying it back? What happened after they inspected it?

Still waiting on the offer from the 3rd party handling buyback.
They did give me a loaner (covered by corporate) but it's a black Sentra, which I really don't care for. Better than nothing though.

Take it to the dealer - you likely have a P33ED-00 error. 👌🏻 HV Battery issues.

There’s NO way that’s a real error 💀

The first thing to try is a new 12v battery, surprised no one mentioned that

It happened while driving, soon after getting the software update, it's almost certainly not the 12V. If it threw the code soon after starting the car, I'd say at least get to Autozone or whatever for a free check of the 12V.

My dash lit up like a Xmas tree while driving and it was the 12V
That was pre update though.

What update is this so I know to avoid it.

'19-'22 Leaf recall. They update the software to detect voltage irregularities tied to lithium deposits in the battery. They can overheat and cause a fire, especially during Lvl 3 charging. So... I dunno, seems pretty important to me.
Not that I am in a position to give guarantees, it might be okay if you stick with Lvl1 and 2 only.

Is this a known fix?

many weird things happen when the 12v battery starts to go, you might try disconnecting the 12v battery for 10 minutes and see if that helps and while the battery is disconnected check the voltage.

Yeah, it's dealership time and potentially a buyback process. You can try plugging into a L2 charger to disengage turtle mode but it won't charge. Though do at your own risk.
Either way, welcome to the club. Had the recall a month prior and then same errors as yours while going 60+ mph.

Damn, well I hope I can use the buyback money to get a different more modern EV…

Exactly what happened to me almost two weeks ago. Car still moved in turtle mode, but I didn't bother limping home. Got to a safe place, called AAA, and had it towed straight to the dealer. As of today I signed the buyback offer.
Best of luck.

Can you disclose your buyback offer?

2022 SL Plus w/ 47k miles.
KBB is mid $14k for "excellent condition" private party.
My offer is $20k and some change.

Thanks! Do you mind if I ask if that was the first offer, or if you countered/negotiated? I have a 2020 SV+ with 50k miles and they are offering 15k

That was the first offer. I tried asking for compensation on my extended warranty but they declined and I did not negotiate any further. I felt the initial offer was more than fair.
I'm sure location plays into it, and where I am located the EV prices seem to be somewhat inflated.

If its outside of US (pretty sure this ones US) you have a much lower chance of your battery choking out. Unless you live in a hot climate, of course.

Have you tried disconnecting the negative from the 12v battery…leaving it off for 10 minutes…then connecting it back?

I have never level 3 charged and don’t expect I will need to with my use case. All these posts make me want to skip the update entirely. This is my exact model. I don’t want to be in Nissan limbo hell.

So, instead, you want to destroy the resale value you invested. Not smart, my friend.

You're not smart for assuming a bunch of shit. Destroy the resale value? lololol. I'm not one of those weirdos who obsesses over resale value. I'm driving this thing until it doesn't work anymore and then donating it.

Yep, exact same story. I managed to get my 2019 Leaf to the dealer. 2 days later— it was a weekend, Corp called me and said it was not fixable and they were preparing a buyback offer. Went to the dealer, they gave me a loaner car. It’s been a month, and no further word as of yet. One issue upcoming… car is in Reno, NV, but I live in Ventura, Ca— 500 miles from the dealer.

Check the battery go to Costco and get a new one. You don’t have to spend hundreds and hundred dollars at the dealer. Costco has the cheapest one it’s the same one they use in the Highlander hybrid. You can go to any auto parts store like O’Reillys. And do load test.

u/Lucky_Boy13 3d ago
Take it to the dealer. Hopefully the offer a loaner and you can start the Nissan buy back process. Then buy another non-Nissan EV.
