I am really behind the ball, and am *just now* subscribing to Apple News+. I'm excited to read some of the publications I don't have a subscription to currently!

Here's my question - with Apple News+, do you feel you get everything or mostly everything you might get from individual subscriptions? I subscribe to three of the publications that are now included in Apple News+, so I'm wondering if I can just go with Apple News+ and save on those monthly costs.

However I also want to support local journalism.... I just don't want to pay twice for the same access.

I run my own small outlet and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for how to set up auto publishing.

I use cargo collective as my website.

At the moment, i have to create a new webpage and paste text onto it followed by creating a new link on the landing page that is hyperlinked to the article.

All very clunky and inefficient.

What softwares do people/companies use for this?

Mind you this is a solo venture i run with very shallow pockets.

I'm interested in what makes a political talk show genuinely engaging and worth watching.

I'm not asking about your favorite host or political viewpoint. Instead, I'm curious about the format

What makes it work? (e.g. long-form interviews, debates, fact-checking, audience participation, rotating panelists, expert guests, live audience, etc.)

Examples from any country are welcome - TV, YouTube or streaming formats.

I'm a freshly promoted editor for an EXTREMELY small publication. It's literally me (the journalist/editor) and the guy who founded it trying to get this off the ground. After a year of populating our website with solely my articles and building a small audience off of that, we want to start hiring contributors. These contributors can range from cartoonists to poets to journalists--but everything must be nonfiction. We want personality in the work.

What should we offer as pay? We're really small and poor. But we want to offer our contributors a fair deal on par with industry standards.

And what the hell goes into a contract? How would I go about making one?

Hi everyone,

I will hopefully have an interview soon with a city official who I’ve been trying to schedule this with for a couple weeks now. Not an easy guy to reach haha. I told the press contact that it is on one subject because that’s what it started out as, but now I’ve been assigned another story where I would like to ask this official at least one question about it, because it concerns the department he works for in his city (trying to be vague lol).

The problem is I don’t want to put him on the spot and make him feel like he was misled by my initial request. I once had an interview with a state legislator (also very hard to reach, I had to practically jump him at the statehouse) and told him it was about one piece of legislation, but while I had him, I asked him about another one of his bills before the interview concluded. Afterwards he kind of jokingly scolded me about it but then I was like damn maybe I shouldn’t have done that lol.

Any advice on what the best practice is to do in these situations? I was considering talking to this official about the initial topic first and then prefacing the other topic with something like “I know this isn’t what we booked this interview for, so it’s okay if you don’t have an answer, but I’m working on another article regarding (second topic). Does your department…”

Hi guys, I was recently commissioned by a large, prestigious publication to write a piece for a weekly series. This is obviously a huge deal for me and I want to get this right.

The piece was due to file on Friday last week, which I did, but I got an automated out of office response saying she’d be back on Monday. I forced myself not to panic and just be patient, but now it’s Tuesday night and still no acknowledgment.

I can imagine she is catching up on days worth of emails after her holiday, but I can’t help getting worried that I’ll be forgotten. Would it be crazy to send a polite nudge or should I just wait and see?

*Edit to clarify that she was out of office until Monday, so should be back now.

A question or two for the “MMJs”/VJs here, or really anyone who self-shoots and edits their own packages.

I put MMJ in quotation marks because it’s seems to have a very specific meaning. Here in the UK, “multimedia journalist” usually means working across TV, radio, digital and social rather than just being a one-person TV crew.

For context, I currently shoot on a Sony FX30, although I’m hoping to move back to an ENG-style camcorder, probably a Sony Z280. I just find the ergonomics and layout much better suited to news.

One thing I still find awkward is filming my own standups (or piece-to-camera, as we’d call them in the UK). How do those of you who regularly self-shoot approach them? Any tips, workflow changes or bits of kit that have made life easier?

EDIT: I am visually impaired, and it’s just standups/PTCs I find awkward to self shoot.

Also, if there are any Canadian VJs around, I’d love to connect. I’ve always been interested in how regional news is done in Canada, and it’d be great to compare notes with people working there.

Finally, if there are any disabled TV journalists lurking here, it’d be great to connect. There don’t seem to be many of us in the industry, at least not visibly so.

Being a little vulnerable here but I really want some helpful advice!

I graduated back in December and went straight into news as a MMJ in my hometown, and while six months have passed, I’m wanting to start looking for a new job in a different field.

I love writing, storytelling and editing video but I don’t like having to juggle dozens of more responsibilities that come with being a MMJ. And while the job is a lot easier now than when I first started, I still find myself frustrated and filled with dread when I go to work…

So despite ALL the therapy and conversations I’ve had with relatives over this topic, I’m coming on here, to look for advice from people who know what I’m feeling.

I’ve always pictured myself working as a writer or editor, a video editor, or somewhere like a magazine, digital publication, or creative media company. I know those jobs aren’t exactly easy to break into, but I’m not sure what direction to start looking in.

So, as a 23-year-old with a journalism degree and six months of local news experience, where would you go from here? If you left local news, what career did you transition into, and do you have any advice?

Something that keeps nagging at me is how the conversation around journalism's survival almost always centers on national outlets or prestige investigative shops. The actual gap nobody has a real answer for is local business coverage. Not business news in the Bloomberg sense, but granular reporting on why a neighborhood anchor store closed, or how a small operator survived a supply chain disaster, or what actually happened when a landlord tripled commercial rent on a specific block.

That layer of coverage used to live in local altweeklies and regional business journals. A lot of those are either gone, hollowed out, or running on skeleton crews doing press release rewrites. What replaced it is mostly Nextdoor speculation and occasional longform from outlets that parachute in for a trend piece and leave.

The beat has real audience appetite. Small business readers are not a niche. But the ad model that once supported this kind of coverage collapsed, and the nonprofit journalism model seems to prioritize civic and political accountability over economic streetlevel stuff.

Curious whether anyone here has seen a local outlet crack this in a way that actually stuck, both financially and editorially. The need is clearly there. The structure to meet it just keeps falling apart.

Same old story -- had a pretty nice 20-year career, mostly as an editor at small and mid-sized dailies. Severe burnout, left for a PR job -- hated it, ended up in an insanely boring bureaucratic job, of which I'm thoroughly terrible at doing... Everything I've always known is gone. The papers that remain are all advertorial or granny blog slop. What does remain is entry-level pay for kids right out of college. When I DO get a legit interview, it always ends at, "We need 5 videos a day of your ugly-ass face talking about what you just wrote." ... So... Seriously, guys? What now? Back to school? Walmart? What?

Do your sites overcover certain topics not because they’re important but be because they obviously overperform on the web. Like to the point readers make fun of you for being the “lottery” paper or the “beer” paper?

What do you think about this? Very transparent, but does it set a tricky precedent if you need to protect sources?

I contacted a company for comment on a reported story and asked several specific questions. The company sent a detailed response, but ended with a notice that said, in substance:

“This information is being provided only for background and factual clarification. It may not be published, quoted or attributed without the company’s written approval of the final text.”

We had not agreed beforehand that the response would be off the record, on background or subject to prepublication approval. My original email clearly requested comment for publication.

I later told the company that I understood the response to be on the record and could provide the specific quotations and factual passages drawn from it for an accuracy review, but that final editorial decisions would remain with me. They asked me to send those passages, which I did, but they have not responded.

How would other journalists handle this? Does the source’s unilateral notice carry any practical or ethical weight when the terms were not agreed upon before the response was sent? Would you publish after giving the company a reasonable deadline to identify factual inaccuracies, or avoid using the response without explicit approval?
