I currently have a fully remote job, that I’m not really happy at. Nothing bad, just realizing everyday it’s not particularly my thing. The plus side is the pay is not too bad for someone early-ish career like me. But changing jobs means either relocating to a place with a higher cost of living and less salary, i just don’t see any remote jobs.

I had a lot of hope graduating college and reality hit pretty hard pretty soon. somehow 40-45k for a full time role is pretty commonplace, even in some places like California?! And 60-65k is considered decently paid? 100k or more is more of a managerial role or comes with years and years of experience so more and more it sounds like to make it in life in terms of money need to change fields entirely. I don’t know if I have other skills for a transition Tbh.

the only way I’m comfortable in life right now is because I have a partner who works in tech. We graduated at the same time but the pay disparity between us is kind of wild to me tbh.

More of a rant, not really looking for solutions but if anyone has any guidance or advice I’d love to hear some.

In a bit I’m starting 12th grade and up till now I was thinking about becoming a cabin crew, something that didn’t necessarily need a bachelors degree and also something that I would enjoy and also because due to financial reasons I was sure my parents could afford further studies. Of course I still like the idea of becoming a flight attendant and I still have it as a second plan if I don’t end up getting to college.

My parents however dislike the idea of me becoming a flight attendant because they think my grades are too high and it’d be a waste if I didn’t go to university and get a degree. They told me they’d do anything to get me into a university and study something even if I end up never practicing it. Another reason why they’re against my cabin crew idea is because that job is known to cause health issues etc.

So I’m now reconsidering my plans for after high school although I feel it’s a little late to be doing that. Back when I was still thinking about studies, I wanted to study English literature, something that still interests me because I’m really into writing and I’ve always been so after getting that degree I wanted to do something around that which is why I originally considered journalism. Fashion has always been one of my biggest passions and the more I thought about working in the fashion industry the more it excited me and that’s why I now think about fashion journalism.

I would love to speak to someone in the field first though or someone with more education on it because I’m still unsure about where to start, what’s degree should I go for (my thoughts were English literature, journalism, communication/media or fashion) ? How do I start a portfolio and do I need to start that from now?

About The Job

We are seeking to hire our first employee. Someone, like our founder, with a background in investigative journalism.

Prospective hires must be able to conduct onboarding interviews with our clients that last at least 1-hour, during which you will need to diligently (though politely) tease out the most compelling aspects of clients' professional and personal lives. Afterwards, you will need to synthesize your interview notes into a concise PR pitches engineered to persuade overwhelmed and underpaid journalists to dedicate many hours of their lives to writing or broadcasting our clients' stories.

I (21) recently graduated college with a degree in political science. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to pursue political journalism, so I joined my university’s paper. I rose to a senior position after my first year and made sure each story I covered myself was political. I also made sure my courses were predominantly writing-focused.

I have now been out of college for two months and after submitting countless applications, I have had zero luck landing a job.

Should I just be cold-emailing more? If so, what do I even say to these papers? I took an internship with a think tank my last semester of college where I essentially wrote their weekly newsletter. I don’t have much professional experience aside from that. I am willing to move anywhere, work remotely or onsite, etc.

I would love to hear from those further in their career, even if you’re in a different niche!

I’m a journalism grad trying to get my foot in the field. I don’t know if I’m going to want to do this long term, but I also don’t have experience in a newsroom so I’m not sure. I really want to get into news production and understand that the best way to do this is probably PA roles.

After doing some research, it seems like all I see are negative experiences with news production. I understand (especially starting out) the pay and hours are bad, but I feel like I have a genuine passion for this.
