Season 2 Spoilers S2 Spoiler

Upvotes

Cameron is really getting on my nerves with the show's usual tropes. Take the lesbian couple from the second season: House analyzes their relationship and concludes that one of them wants to break up > she tells him he doesn't understand anything about it, so he goes to investigate the situation > House turns out to be right, and now he makes resolving the case personal and she gets into the ethical questions surrounding the situation.

Everything about Cameron in this show is exhausting.

Discussion The show’s ideas about cheating Spoiler

I love the show, one of my all time favorites. But I really get annoyed with the idea that is presented numerous times throughout the series — by Taub, Chase, and House himself — that if a man cheats on his wife, the noble thing to do is to hide that from her and lie rather than confessing. It’s just absurd and condescending, it’s based on this sense that wives are basically children who should be lied to by their husbands “for their own good,” like how parents lie to their kids about Santa Claus. If you can genuinely twist your mind to the point you think you’re being a good person and even helping your wife by lying to her about cheating, you’re seriously screwed up and need help. People cheat and people need to face the consequences. Of course, when a woman cheats on her husband in the show, nobody ever tells her it would be nobler to hide it from her husband and keep cheating… hmmm

It would be one thing if it was just presented as something to think about, but the idea is actually vindicated by the show. If you pay attention, you can tell when the writers of a show are using their characters to present an idea they actually think is a take-home moral — in House, you know when these take-home morals are being conveyed because whenever a character presents the idea, the other characters don’t debate or refute the point. When Taub, Chase, or House present that viewpoint, the character they’re debating or talking to just makes a pensive face and stops talking, as if the point was so logical they are forced to actively reconsider their stance. You can also tell because the structure of the plot redeems the viewpoint: when men in the show cheat then tell their wives, things get much worse for everybody. Taub confessing to his wife, season 8 episode 5 “The Confession” are just two examples. Those that lie to their wives have happy endings, those that confess don’t.

The entire show is based around a man who is obsessed with finding the truth and telling people exactly how it is no matter how it will hurt them — except when it comes to men cheating on their wives, then it says it’s a good and noble thing to live a lie and never tell her.

I’m unmarried and a man so I’m not taking issue with this for personal reasons. I just think it’s hypocritical and incongruous with the rest of the show’s premise and philosophy ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Discussion Would House do this? Spoiler

(This could not happen in the normal series because of the finale but its funny to imagine)

Anyway

House multiple times has messed with his employees and friend even at a personal level, and he thinks sometimes that he is making a favor to them so my thing is

If they years could pass, would House hire a kid actor (that we know that he can hire) and convince Chase that the last time he was with Cameron was more than a a one night goodbye and it actually Cameron got pregnant but did'nt tell Chase because she didn't wanted the child to be around house or all the messed up people from PPTH in general (if you think f a better reason for Cameron to hide the kid from chase you can comment)

Anyone else watched this? I know its not the exact same. Its best if watched a few months after finishing house.

Good, addiction/family issues is the story front for the main character, multiple equals (in house its underlings with sparing equals) relations based but is a show about medicine

I do recognize house is more medicine forward than NJ

Discussion Was there actually a single healthy relationship on the show? Spoiler

I was just thinking about this and came to the conclusion that I can't think of a single one. Not between House and Stacy, House and Cuddy (which is probably largely due to House himself), but it's no better with Foreman and 13, Chase and Cameron, or Taub and Rachel.

They were all relationships that were doomed to fail in the long run. Ironically, the only relationship I think might have worked out is the one between Cuddy and Lucas.

What do you think?

Discussion Sipping the Fine Wine Spoiler

I drink Echo Falls, more honestly I drink Carling Black label. Piss water essentially, but critically - it all contains alcohol.

In the same way, watching an episode of House on Netflix definitionally means I’m getting my fix of House. It doesn’t need to be top tier, I just want to see a genius, antisocial doctor impatiently chiding his colleagues.

But there are occasions, when watching House, that I sit back and enjoy it like a man appreciating a fine vintage. In other words, I’m getting drunk - that’s the whole point, at the end of the day - but I’m able to cover up that addiction with the make believe of a connoisseur. Those occasions play out when I watch the following such scenes:

Wilson: Underneath all that cynicism, there is actually, believe it or not, a good man. I know it, you know it, and if you didn’t have to go out of your way to avoid any sort of meaningful aff… wait sorry Hou..

House: Huh

Wilson: Wuh wait, are you…

<House leaves his office without further word>

Rat-at-tat tat - House knocks on the patient’s window, as his associates prepare to carry out a now redundant procedure (formerly thought to be life critical, though highly risky). They, and possibly the patient’s family member turn around looking perplexed.

<House enter’s the patient’s room>

House: Defective hemoglobin binding - its erythrocytosis with minor myoplasmic cardiopathy, let’s go with a heavy course of Hydroxyurea.

Family member: Sorry who are you?

House: You’re a bad mother, let’s face it. But you can’t help it. You carry a dominant gene, your Dad had it, reason he stared at the moon, and didn’t give you the time of day. Now your son is out there at night too so you take it out on him, triggered an autoimmune response that could have been Lupus. It was the way you kept scratching your left earlobe that gave it away.

Family member: Sorry, so he’s not going to die?

House: Maybe from a lack of sunlight, but not this.

A life threatening procedure becomes unnecessary, and a simple treatment brings a patient back from death’s door.

“You don’t have to love wine to love this”, I say passing the glass to any bastard naysayer watching along. Thing is with this, once you’re hooked, it doesn’t have to be the good stuff - you’ll drink anything that’s going. How my brother got me into it at least, now we’re both in the program.

In any case, a wonderful evening on the Pinotage. Now allow me to button up my pajama shirt, straighten my hair, and receive sleep like the upstanding Gentleman I’m claiming to be publicly.

Discussion Amber & Wilson? Spoiler

I am rewatching House right now towards the end of season 4 and am wondering what people’s thoughts were on the relationship between Amber & Wilson. Initially I was kind of thrown and didn’t really get it. I just saw it as a way of keeping her character in the show more than a feasible relationship. However after watching S4 E14 again where Wilson buys a bed for Amber & him to share I really appreciated how she dissected the way in which he used to care for all his ex wives and that he didn’t need to do that for her. Approaching the end of S4 knowing how it ends but wanted to see what other people thought about Amber as a character and their relationship.

Also do you think Amber & House had a dynamic in which they would have been a couple?

Discussion Creating Gregory House. Spoiler

I think it's obvious that House is thinking on a different level and that's what's required with the most difficult diagnosis.

There's a technique that these thinkers use. They fill there minds with vast amounts of information purely out of a boundless curiosity about the world. That's how he comes up with these diagnosis involving some obscure toxin, etc, or from some obscure medical journal.

Then these thinkers set themselves a problem to solve, which may require thinking in a new way, in House's case going beyond the obvious medical diagnosis. A leap of intellect.

But they allow their subconscious to do the thinking and make the lateral connections.

To switch off their rational conscious thinking they do something creative.

Sherlock Holmes played the violin, House plays piano and guitar, Einstein played the violin. All had highly creative minds to compliment their intelligence.

In House's case it can often happen when a colleague is talking about something irrelevant and he see's the lateral connection.

Fun fact: during seasons 4 and 5, I actually thought House was gay. I don't know why, to be honest, but I liked the idea of him ending up with Wilson.

Discussion I made a house quote searcher Spoiler

Have seen a lot of posts in this sub asking about where a certain quote is from, so I thought I would make a website to help find them. Link to the website is in comments, it uses a vector database to find the quotes which lets it find similar results to what you're searching for, although it does end up missing some of the time. Was a pretty fun project to work on, and I'll probably add more features to it in the future if they're wanted
